Cartoonists Aren't Always Funny
dougdoepke23 December 2015
Cartoonist Hooper (Erdman) draws a successful one-panel comical character named Salty (Popeye?). Trouble is after eleven-years, he's running out of ideas and it's preying on him. So he's taking non-prescription drugs to help. However, the quality of the strip's declining; plus, he's missing submission due dates. Losing control, he fires his long-time agent, and threatens his loyal wife (Nash) with divorce. Clearly, he needs medical help, but will he face up to the problem.

Convincing turn by actor Erdman as he goes through the trying stages. But what's with the musical scoring that at times seems near comical. Perhaps it's to soften the dramatic bouts that at times get pretty intense. There is a sampling of appropriate therapy of the time. I think, however, I would have preferred a more shaded ending. Nonetheless, the series should be lauded for dealing with a difficult subject despite the direction of 50's TV.
