THE RIFLEMAN –Quiet Night, Deadly Night - 1962

This is the 146th episode from the 1958 to 1963 western series, THE RIFLEMAN. Over the course of 168 episodes we follow the life of Lucas McCain and his son, Mark. They have moved to the small western town of North Fork where they hope to start a new life. Chuck Connors headlines the series with Johnny Crawford as his son. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle which of course ends up getting him in no end of trouble.

The stage arrives in North Fork and one of the passengers is sick. The local doc, Ralph Moody is summoned. He has the woman carried into the nearby hotel. While this is happening, Sheriff Paul Fix thinks he recognizes one of the other passengers. He hits his office for a quick look through the wanted posters. Bingo! The man, Ed Ames, is wanted for several murders. Fix grabs his shotgun and returns to the stage.

Now doc Moody comes out and warns everyone except those on the stage to leave. The sick woman has the pox. Everyone on the stage and anyone who touched the woman need to be quarantined. This includes Chuck Connors, who had carried the sick woman into the hotel. Ames turns to leave but finds Sheriff Fix blocking his way with a levelled shotgun. Fix has Connors disarm Ames and escort him inside. Fix then places armed men around the quarantined hotel.

Doc Moody has Fix telegraph for a new pox serum. He then makes the woman as comfortable as possible. Ames helps himself to a bottle of whiskey and bides his time. He intends to make a break for it as soon as he can. He manages to toss a glass of whiskey in Connors' eyes and retrieve his own gun. Now it is Ames who must be on guard while Connors waits for an opportunity to make the odds even. This of course presents itself and Ames gets his just desserts.

Ed Ames was a singer, The Ames Brothers, who moved to acting and would score big in the long running DANIEL BOONE series. He played the role of Mingo in that series.

Story is helped along by actor Ed Ames

Even though the title of the episode would make a person think this show would be filmed at night (Quiet Night, Deadly Night) all the action occurred during the daylight hours. With that quirk, it still did not take away from an interesting tale.

The story begins when a stagecoach arrives in North Fork with three passengers, two ladies and a man. One of the ladies is running a fever and is taken to the Lou's hotel to be treated by Doc Burrage. The good Doc believes the woman has small pox and quarantines the entire hotel. So we have the three passengers along with Lucas and Lou that will be held in the hotel pending the outcome of the diagnoses.

In the meantime, Micah noted that the male on the coach is a wanted murderer by the name of Lee Coyle (Ed Ames). With this little piece of nugget, Lucas and Lou will be held-up with a known murderer as long as the small pox does not get all of them first.

This is by far not one of the most exciting stories but the show is helped out by the acting ability of Ed Ames. Mr Ames does a nice job of provoking fear into the situation which made for an interesting concept to the story. Add the idea of a contagious disease into the mix and you have a nice plot. Overall a show worth a watch.

Good story, but...

If Micah had given Lucas handcuffs to secure the murderer played by Ed Ames, there wouldn't have been a problem with him. But then we wouldn't have an episode to watch lol!!!

Now I have to think up 400 more characters. I guess IMDb doesn't believe in Shakespeare's saying that "brevity is the soul of wit".

Let's see.........Well, it was unusual to see Ed Ames playing a bad guy. He did a great job of it though. I like the Lou Mallory character, she is quite fiery & spunky and a great match for Lucas McCain. I thought they might get married at some point but guess Daniel Boone was more her type.
