After watching Party of Five, I came here to see a glimpse, a little of Sarah's life in New York following the broken engagement with Bailey, and the events of Bye Bye Love. Also, to see how Amy and Christopher managed to put Sarah away from SF, away from all the people she loves, the family where she belonged. Besides, watching Jennifer Garner in a previous role to her success in television and cinema, can be another motive to try seeing something of this forgotten spin-off.
First, Sarah arrives to the airport, and seemingly her baggage with her clothes is missing. But then, she starts to feel excited talking to anyone, even the cab driver, about her birth mother's life in the city. All this makes me think, how alone is she, and how much better would have been this trip/episode if Bailey or Julia were here with her. In Robin's building, Sarah quickly manages to rent her old apartment for a few days and meets Romy (Jennifer Garner), a young woman who wants to be an actress, and is actually living there. To call home, she sends her to a music store across the street, where Sarah meets John Maguire, the guy who works there. Anyway, here, Sarah calls Bailey for the first time to tell him that she is fine but lies about staying in a hotel, and the missing baggage. Also, she doesn't want him to worry about her. The next day, she meets William Landford, who turns out to be the last person who could be her birth father. This man, who is a dance teacher, leads her to Archer Fitzwith, a director who was in love with Robin Merrin. Excited, she spends a crazy night in a party at the building allowed by Cecilia, the apartment manager. Probably trying to forget who she is, she invites John to dance in the party, and then confides in him about meeting Archer at some important meeting, before the man leaves town. To enter, she poses as a singer and then meets him near the bathroom. Archer reveals that he was in love with Robin, but she left him for another guy, more "dangerous", looking for a free life without stability. Sarah feels saddened because she has no more clues and wants to return to her happy, comfortable life in SF, but John and his "friend" Joss make her get drunk, and finally the three end up in jail. She can't believe she got drunk (if Bailey knew...), so she refuses to call home to be released. John calls Archer, who helps them. And who knows, maybe the drink, freedom and partying affected her, just like affected Bailey in Party of Five season 3, because after being released, Sarah decides to stay in NYC, and gets a job as a waitress near the apartment. At the same time, Romy declines a job where she has to expose herself, and starts dating a neighbor, JB, after a visit of her parents.
This series seems so different to Party of Five, partially because is too focused on Sarah. Besides, the connection between the two series is not strong, today there was only one phone call that Bailey answered off screen. Also, it's strange to believe that after living 8 months with Owen, she wouldn't even think about the kid. And what about Claudia, Julia? They were close enough. So the beginning, and the reason for Sarah to stay indefinitely in NYC after finding out that Archer is not her birth father, is not good enough. And who knows, probably that's why the writers should have thought better before cutting out Sarah completely of Party of Five and starting this failed spin off.
