'Tiny Toon Adventures' often did do very well with its individual story episodes, with "Fields of Honey" and "Her Wacky Highness" being two of the show's best ever. Part of me did wish that there was more of them, with there being a lot that are segment structured. The concept for "Hero Hamton" is quite nice. Montana Max is an entertaining character who grew on me, but while Hamton is a likeable enough character other characters in the show have stronger personalities so come off stronger when leads.
"Hero Hamton" is not one of the best 'Tiny Toon Adventures' episodes. It is interesting to see Hamton and Montana Max together and Calamity Coyote is always welcome. Compared to other episodes of the show, it is on the slightly bland side and it would have been even better with more laughs and if Hamton's personality was a little stronger. Does that mean that "Hero Hamton" is a bad episode? Not at all, actually kind of still like it and it has its own charms. It just didn't wow me.
Although there are things that could have been done a lot better, "Hero Hamton" does have a good deal that it does very well. The animation is vibrantly coloured and beautifully rich in detail, not just the backgrounds but also the expressions and reactions of the characters which are wonderfully loony. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now.
Enough of the writing has some sharp wit and made me smile, with some affectionate references. The story has some nice tension in the right places, while it was interesting to see a different side to Calamity. Montana Max is a very entertaining character. Can't fault the voice acting.
My overall feelings on Hamton are summed up quite well here. He is likeable and doesn't come over as annoying, there is some nice tension between him and Max. He does though work quite a lot better as a supporting character with not quite enough personality, compared to the wackier ones of Buster, Babs and Plucky, to be a leading one.
Do think that "Hero Hamton" can be on the bland side. Other episodes have far more of a wackier edge that isn't quite there here, though at least it isn't too cutesy. The story does have some tension and fun, but could have had a more consistent energy and not been as predictable.
In summary, not one of my favourites of this great show but a decent watch. 6/10
