'Is this real... or some strange and twisted dream'
Tweekums11 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The investigations continues apace as Cooper pays a visit to Ronette Pulaski in the hospital; she has a violent reaction when she sees a sketch of the mysterious Bob and Audrey Horne has a few questions for one of the clients at One Eyed Jacks about Laura. While there are advances in that case we still don't know what happened to Catherine Martell in the fire; the Horne brothers clearly believe she is dead but for now we can't know for sure although the fact that Shelly Johnson is alive suggests otherwise.

This second episode of season two continues in the slightly strange way one has come to expect; one notably strange early scene features director David Lynch's son Austin Jack Lynch as a boy who appears to have magical powers... and that is just the start of it later Major Briggs visits Cooper with something he thinks might be relevant... a possible message from space! Last season we knew little of Bob but it seems as if we are going to start learning more about him now; Leland recognises a sketch of Bob as somebody he knew as a child and Maddy has what appears to have been a vision of him in a particularly creepy scene.

Probably the creepiest episode overall.
Twin Peaks is most famous for its creepy, surreal moments (the dwarf, the giant, etc). While this episode may not boast the most famous of these scenes, it has perhaps the highest concentration of them (except for the finale, obviously). From creamed corn to Bob crawling over a couch, it is obvious that this one was directed by Lynch.

Not only does this episode have a lot of creepy scenes, but it also has my personal favourite; Major Briggs delivering the message to Cooper. It blows my mind and chills my spine every time I watch it. The scene is important because it is the first confirmation that the strange happenings in previous episodes were not just random dreams and visions, but tied to something real and supernatural. It also serves as important character development for Major Briggs.

Overall, this may be one of my favourite episodes. It has my favourite scene from the series as well as the iconic creamed corn scene and a general atmosphere of creepiness sustained throughout.

Yes--The Surreal Deal
Hitchcoc5 June 2017
Cooper continues his quest, though he has been absorbed into a kind of netherworld. He finds the second of the giant's prophecies to be presented to him. Meanwhile, Leo continues in his coma while a second comatose patient continues to be manic over her visions. There are some really interesting scenes. One is Audrey attacking the guy who has been connecting with young women through the perfume counter. She is, however, trapped at One Eyed Jack's. That note sits just out of sight, under his bed at the motel. There are other strange goings on involving someone who lives next to Donna's Meals on Wheels customer, who is also bizarre and has a ten year old accomplice who is a magician. There is also the first sign that aliens may be involved in everything. Finally, there is this strange scene as the girls sing along with James as he plays a weird song on his electric guitar. We see Donna go into a fit of jealousy. There are some jump out scenes as well.

the owls are not what they seem...

Following the fantastically absurdist season two premiere, David Lynch continues his role as director and shows off even more moments of the horrific and hilarious. He's a movie magician with plenty of tricks up his sleeve, including wild avant garde dream sequences, disappearing creamed corn, and plenty more bizzarities. This episode delves deep into the darkness and mysticism of Twin Peaks while also maintaining a strong sense of humor throughout. Major Briggs gets a bigger role and reveals himself to be not only one of the show's most likable and respectable characters, but also one of its most iconic and essential. Throug further plot developments, his role in the series was soon to become highly important, and he remains one of the few successfully strong elements of the mostly underwhelming/disappointingly inferior mid second season, but, luckily, we aren't THERE just yet.

BOB
lareval2 October 2021
The darkness takes over the show and even the funniest, strangest things get overshadowed by the unsetting, terrifying atmosphere. Creepy, scary, gloomy and addictive. Perfect!

Warning: Spoilers
Another very good episode. We are starting to really get some answers now. The extremely traumatised Ronette has seemingly identified BOB as the one who terrorised her and murdered Laura. BOB shows up a few times this episode, and he's a frankly terrifying character. That technique of a villain running directly towards the camera is always so visceral; worked very well in Get Out as well. Whatever is going on with this guy, he seems to be some kind of supernatural phenomenon, and he also seems to be linked with Madeleine. Speaking of her, during the scene where Major Briggs shows Cooper the very strange transcripts (which is in itself very intriguing), above where Cooper's name is written out a few times reads "M666". Now Madeleine is the only character whose name begins with M, so I think the connotations are quite clear. Small detail but very nice, I look forward to seeing how that takes effect because there is 0 chance that's coincidence. This episode did have some very strange scenes and was definitely a Lynch product. The scene with the kid magician was particularly tense, unsettling, and just absurd. I really commend this series on its ability to evoke feelings so easily, especially given what we're seeing doesn't make any sense half the time. I also like the contrast between Bobby and Shelly, who I actually really like together and who I hope nothing bad happens to, and what looks like an emerging love triangle between James, Donna, and Madeleine. How on earth has a guy as flat, dull, stone faced, and unfunny as James got these two beautiful girls head over heels for him? That guitar scene was pretty hilarious, so help me if I ever did that for anyone

PS - I found a quote from an earlier episode: "Fire is the Devil hiding like a coward in smoke." If Fire is Laura, and the Devil is a Madeleine, I wonder if the two swapped places before the murder. Madeleine has definitely taken her place now, so to speak, but I'm just throwing a half-arsed prediction out there in case I'm right

Ronette

Warning: Spoilers
An interesting episode where Ronette will give an important information about what look like the killer. The major will give a weird info about Cooper on his work and how his name was mentionned multiple times and with a weird message about Howls. Itc pretty intriguing to be honest like the kid in suit in the house where Laura worked. I found also the other stories pretty interesting like Audrey Hepburn who will gather more info on Laura and her own father. Leo is severly injured and that will make Leo girlfriend happy to cheat on him and get rid of her other man. I mean the whole episode have interesting mysteries, revelations, surprises. Sound good for the next episodes.

Warning: Spoilers
The thing that holds Twin Peaks back for me is the humour. At times the absurdism can be funny, like the iconic waiter scene at the beginning of Season 2. More often, the humour is just lazy and this episode is a perfect example. I'm sorry but I don't see what's funny about someone discussing whether to burn a cheese pig, or someone swatting a fly, or someone walking into a room with a piece of tape stuck to his head. And since that type of thing makes up much of the episode's runtime, I can't say I enjoyed it as much as usual.

Yet one scene is one of the most eerie in the entire series when Major Briggs delivers a message to Cooper that is the same as the one delivered by the giant: the owls are not what they seem. It's creepy on many levels, confirming the giant was real. And where did the coded message come from? Another planet? Is the answer to Twin Peaks' mysteries not supernatural but in fact extraterrestrial?

There are also some nice soap opera-esque moments. Donna catches Maddy looking at James seductively while they sing. This is a confusing moment for James because Maddy is like Laura for him, and Donna knows this. No wonder she feels insecure. Then there's Bobby's plan with Shelly, when he convinces her to use Leo for disability benefits. What they're doing feels like another stab at Leo and one he deserves, for all he's done to her. Major Briggs' discussion with the Log Lady about achievement is also a highlight.

It is more like a parody

After a mostly normal 1st season the 2nd is of the rails. I am pretty sure that after the success of the first season director was given cart blanch for the remaining episodes. I am also positive that the instructions on set are go out there and do and say whatever comes in mind..
