With the latest killing Cooper realises that Windom Earle is no longer playing by the rules; he also learns that he isn't only in Twin Peaks to get revenge on his former partner. Major Briggs supplies information about Earle's time at Project Blue Book and it is clear that he is obsessed with finding the Black Lodge. As Earle still has the Sheriff's office bugged he learns about the Major's involvement and sets about kidnapping him so he can interrogate him about the meaning of the petroglyphs in Own Cave. Cooper meanwhile warns Donna, Audrey and Shelly about Earle. Later on he sees Annie again; clearly they are now in love; she talks of entering the Miss Twin Peaks competition and suddenly the Giant appears to Cooper; vigorously gesturing to him in a way that suggests 'No!'
The tension continued to rise in this episode as Earle figures out the meaning of the petroglyphs... even if it is a bit of a coincidence that he is listening to the bug every time Cooper and the others discuss vital information in the Sheriff's office; of course this sort of thing happens because the plot demands that it does. There were some darkly comic laughs to be had when Leo gets his hands on the control to his shock collar but doesn't realise that he will be the one shocked when he presses it... several times! The biggest surprise of the episode came from Audrey Horne when she went to say goodbye to John Justice Wheeler... so much for her being the bad girl of the town! As the episode concludes we see a familiar person in the woods; a clear harbinger of dangers to come!
