It's 1861 in Arizona Territory and the Union Army is pulling out leaving Arizona to the Apaches and to the Confederacy. Mark Stevens plays an army captain from Virginia who has not resigned and presumably is a Union supporter. But is he?
While his superiors wonder about Stevens, Stevens is given sealed orders to deliver to an outpost before it is abandoned. He's to travel alone and he wonders just who he can trust when he meets up with Robert Cornthwaite, Willis Bouchey, and Jack Elam along the trail. And of course those pesky Apaches.
This was a nice suspenseful story with a nice climactic battle between Stevens and his companions of convenience and the Apaches. All is not as it seems.
