Bickering Soldiers
ccthemovieman-16 May 2010
This is the kind of episode that you're glad isn't typical of the entire DVD Season One set. It plays not a western but more like a half--hour soap opera with bickering people and not much else. Almost all of the show is centered in a bombed-out house in which four soldiers are surrounded by Apaches and try to figure out how to get out of this jam.

What most of the episode features, however, is the always-gruff Lee J. Cobb ("Capt. Andrew Wattlling") arguing with the other men, none of whom has the slightest respect for the officer, who apparently has a history of deception and cowardice.

The only interesting character in this "play" was "Quine," played by John Larch, who speaks up the most against "Wattling." An odd thing about this "Death March" is that the introduction by host Dick Powell said it's all about superstition. He gives us some interesting facts about various tribes' superstitions and what they meant. However, the actual story did not deal with that, as he said. Whatever.

Death Watch
Prismark1018 September 2023
The best part of this story was the introduction from Dick Powell. He goes through Native American paraphernalia, one of which he describes as an early form of a protection racket.

Unfortunately what follows is a turgid bore. Even Lee J Cobb can't save this one.

Cobb plays Captain Andrew Watling, a soldier with a history of bickering and complaining. He thinks he should had been an officer by now but there are suspicions of cowardice from others.

As the three soldiers and a scout are surrounded by Apache Warriors. They complain and argue as they are scared.

Knowing they face certain death, Captain Watling makes a sudden and impromptu move.

There is very little reward here. It is shot like a stage play.
