"Battle of the Badge" was the very first episode when we see the shows most mysterious and dangerous character, Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket. The episode begins when Ash, Misty and Brock come back to Veridian city so Ash can claim the Earth Badge. Unfortunately, the trio run into ever cocky and annoying Gary Oak, who has also come to Veridian to get the Earth Badge. Gary enters the gym and fights (you know it!), Giovanni(!). When it starts to look like Gary's claimed the badge, Giovanni whips out his most powerful Pokemon, MEWTWO!!! A little later, Giovanni has to dash off because of an emergency concerning Mewtwo after he snaps at Jessie, James and Meowth for bringing him Togepi when it has no apparent abilities and leaves them in charge of the gym. Giovanni goes into a secret room and sees to Mewtwo and that's the last we see of him for the entire episode. Meanwhile, Ash battles Jessie and James and eventually wins and gets the Earth Badge, but the gym collapses! The trio decide to head back to Pallet town to see Professor Oak about the Pokemon League and the episode ends.
A great episode. I highly recommend it, especially if you like Giovanni and Team Rocket all together much better than Ash, Misty and Brock, like me!
