Once one accustoms oneself to the fact that the piano teacher and her reluctant student engage in an operatic duel over the task of getting through the lesson, there is a certain element of humour which can be appreciated. I guess this is what the writer and director were going for, but the humour would have been much more apparent and direct had the operatic underpinnings of the production been jettisoned.
