Nearing the halfway mark of the movie year and teetering, as we all are, on the edge of another summer movie abyss which holds only the thinnest promise of providing strong reason to tread amongst the mall-igentsia in search of air-conditioned escape, I find myself feeling far less regret than usual over the movies I’ve missed so far in 2016. Usually by this point I’m bemoaning having had to sideline 20 or 30 interesting pictures because I couldn’t get out to a theater. This year I’ve whiffed on about the same number of movies of interest, but only nine or 10 of those misses have anything like real regret attached to them. It does actively annoy me that I will have to catch up with the likes of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Cemetery of Splendor, the foodie doc City of Gold, Jeff Nichols’ Midnight Special, Ethan Hawke as Chet Baker in Born to Be Blue,...

So here we are, smack dab in the middle of the dog days of summer (and if you don’t get that little saying, try lying out on the sidewalk in 100-degree heat for 15 minutes or so, like Fido does, and see if a light bulb doesn’t go off). The dogs are often howling in movie theaters too—at times it seems as though August has replaced January in the hearts of moviegoers as the dumping ground for pictures not really worthy of our attention (or a serious investment in the marketing department). Movies like Pixels and Fantastic Four have their perverse fascination—just how bad can they possibly be? Both were greeted with reviews so scathing and unyielding in their acidity that studio heads can only pray nothing in October, November or December will be perceived as worse, and I have to admit a certain curiosity. But that...

Writer-director Judd Apatow (Bridesmaids, Girls) can officially add “Simpsons scribe” to his IMDb page resumé this Sunday — and he owes it all to being a hoarder.
Sunday’s episode, in which Homer becomes Bart’s new best friend after being hypnotized into thinking he’s a 10-year-old boy, was written as a spec script by Apatow in 1990 during the show’s first season.
TVLine spoke with Apatow and Simpsons executive producer Al Jean about Sunday’s throwback episode (Sunday, 8/7c), its two-decade journey to the screen and whether it could mark the beginning of a beautiful writing partnership.

After North Korea threatened 9/11-style violence at movie theaters that would screen Sony's "The Interview" comedy, most theater chains dropped the film, which then causes Sony to officially announce that "The Interview" will not be released theatrically. But after pressure from President Obama, lots of Hollywood actors and the general public, Sony has decided to release "The Interview" on December 25th is select theaters, but will not provide any security. One theater owner said: "It's not so much that we believed anyone from North Korea would be running into theaters with an Ak-47, but more that there enough people around the country who are mentally unstable who might use this as an excuse to do something." As a result, most theaters will have extra security and not allow backpacks or large overcoats. Seth Rogen commented on the decision to release the film, stating: "The people have spoken! Freedom has prevailed!

In a change of heart, Sony Pictures will allow any movie theater to show “The Interview” on Christmas Day. So far, nearly 100 indie theaters will immediately jump on board for the showings. Sony will also play on VOD, but major distributors are balking at this time.
Here’s the release:
“We have never given up on releasing The Interview and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Entertainment. “At the same time, we are continuing our efforts to secure more platforms and more theaters so that this movie reaches the largest possible audience.”
“I want to thank our talent on The Interview and our employees, who have worked tirelessly through the many challenges we have all faced over the last month. While we hope this is only the first step of the film’s release,...

From 1998 to 2001, Judd Apatow created five TV shows for Dreamworks. Everyone knows Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared, but only certain nerds know the shows that never even went to series: North Hollywood, Life on Parole, and Sick in the Head. Sick in the Head's 1999 pilot aired a couple of times in 2003 on the cable channel Trio, and Splitsider has uncovered clips from it. The pilot starred David Krumholtz as a young therapist, Kevin Corrigan as his slacker roommate, and a pre-SNL Amy Poehler as his super-crazy patient. In this clip, Poehler jumps all over the emotional spectrum in an attempt to get Krumhotlz's home phone number. (Think a much more manic What About Bob?) Watch the clip below and the others at Splitsider, and think about the alternate universe in which Amy Poehler and Seth Rogen's lives are swapped. Pawnee totally would've legalized marijuana by now.

The 2011 Emmy nominations are here: AMC’s Mad Men and ABC’s Modern Family led the TV Academy’s nominees Thursday morning, while two HBO new dramas challenged the pack. First-year shows Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones had strong showings that included cracking the best drama series category. Another new drama, AMC’s The Killing, picked up some honors as well. (Our snubs list is here)
It was a tight race to land the most nominations: Mad Men tallied 19, followed by 18 for Boardwalk Empire (including a best actor nod for Steve Buscemi), 17 for Modern Family (including a near sweep...

It was a nod to the new and not much of a sendoff to the old that best describes the selection of 500-odd contenders for Emmy statuettes unveiled before dawn Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The spunky Fox comedy-musical "Glee" and the off-kilter comedy "Modern Family" -- also produced by Fox but airing on ABC -- muscled their way into the key nomination categories, leading a number of fresh entrants into what in recent years had become a predictable parade of Emmy hopefuls.
Those two and several other mainstream newcomers to the fray also helped rebalance the scales between broadcast network fare and cable contenders, with the former contingent coming away with 247 total noms to cablers' 240.
The unflinching World War II mini "The Pacific," racked up the most noms for a single entry with 24, but its only competition is a well-mannered British period piece called "Return to Cranford...

Emotional pain and how to deal with it is the driving force of most stand-up comics' material. It's also the throughline of Judd Apatow's third movie, Funny People. So when AMC News caught up with Apatow and his cast, it's no surprise that pain and stand-up comedy were the main topics of conversation.
Apatow and Funny People star Adam Sandler were roommates in North Hollywood a few decades ago when they were both starting out. In fact, the movie's opening scene where a young George Simmons (Sandler) makes prank phone calls to a deli is actual footage of Sandler shot by Apatow from back then.
During our sit-down interview, Apatow told me how he always wanted to write a story using those real-life experiences: Starting out on the comedy circuit, working for free, and writing material for other comedians. Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill, who play comics in the movie,...

When you gotta go, you gotta go. Even if you're being honored by the TV Academy and sitting on stage in front of hundreds of fans. But note to Neil Patrick Harris: If you make a run for the loo, you do need to turn off your microphone! At last night's fan event for How I Met Your Mother at the TV Academy in North Hollywood, Nph made a dash for the bathroom in the middle of the panel discussion (proving even his two preggo costars, Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders, are better at holding it). Bad luck for Neil though, since Jason Segel remembered his buddy still had his mic on, and asked for the volume to be cranked up. Over the crowd's laughter, we fans could hear that Neil took a tip from Jack Donaghy...
