Following a near death experience brought on by alcohol poisoning, Rab and Jamesie take a spritual retreat to Buckfast Abbey in Devon. It is a nightmare - Rab wages war with the stuffy Abbot of the grounds and Jamesie ends up on the receiving end of revenge from a monk named Frank who once was engaged to Ella and had sworn to revenge himself against Jamesie ( who took Ella away from him ) ever since...
A pretty weak episode from the fourth series with few genuinely funny moments and lines, despite a guest appearance by Peter Vaughan ( who is in actual fact Gregor Fisher's father in law ), best known for his appearances in 'Porridge' and Citizen Smith'. Roy Sampson, who appeared with Vaughan in the 'Porridge' episode 'The Harder They Fall', plays Frank, the vengeful monk who forces Jamesie to become a monk himself and places him under a curse should he leave the faith.
Funniest bit - finding Rab ( who has escaped from hospital ) hiding in a bin, Jamesie quips : ''I knew the N. H. S were short of beds but I didn't think they were reduced to this!''.
