In what’s become the best, and craziest, show this summer, Fox’s Wayward Pines has become must-see TV.
The intense episodes play out more like a movie and the soundtrack is haunting and other-worldly.
Lakeshore Records has announced it will release the Wayward Pines – Original Television Soundtrack digitally on July 17 and on CD July 24, 2015. The album features the show’s original score by Charlie Clouser (Saw, Numb3rs).
“The main direction I received was that the score should help with the feeling that ‘something is not right’ in the town of Wayward Pines,” said Clouser. “For a while, we don’t know if Matt Dillon’s character is hallucinating, or maybe still in a coma and just dreaming, so the score needed to lean toward a ‘malfunctioning’ feel – that meant using sounds that are a little ‘out of whack’. As the series progresses, the score starts to get more and...

What happens when supernatural screenwriter and director, M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Signs), collaborates with Blake Crouch, the horror novelist and creator of the critically acclaimed Pines trilogy? You get Fox's Wayward Pines, a psychological thriller about a mentally unstable secret service agent who finds himself trapped in bizarro-land where all kinds of scary, unimaginable circumstances lead him to question his own sanity and stage a seemingly futile escape. We're questioning that sanity as well, especially since Shyamalan's trademark is the shocking surprise denouement. Is it worth a watch? Let's take a look.
Add to the mix, executive producer Chad Hodge, whose The Playboy Club and Runaway were prematurely cancelled before they even got their feet wet. Let's just hope Hodge's multi-million dollar education makes his third time a charm.

Breaking Bad composer Dave Porter has signed on to score Fox's new event series Wayward Pines. Pines, based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Blake Crouch and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, will run for 10 episodes on Fox in 2014. The Twin Peaks-esque thriller stars Matt Dillon as a Secret Service agent investigating the disappearance of two federal agents in Wayward Pines, Idaho. During Fox‘s Upfront presentation yesterday, they announced that they are jumping into the realm of “event series”. Although they aren’t providing a definition, the inference is that, one, it will be short season, what we used to call half seasons but are more and more becoming the norm, based on successful cable models of 8-12 episodes; and two, they will be standalone seasons/series, based on the model of Fox‘s cousin FX‘s American Horror Story.
The benefits to viewers are pretty great. These shorter seasons are usually broadcast without a break, and there are no unresolved cliffhanger endings and no “but how will they do this next season?” or “save our show!” or “this show is getting stale” grumbling, because we know ahead of time when the season/series will be over.

On Monday Fox unveiled their primetime slate for the 2013-2014 television season to the national advertising community during its annual Programming Presentation at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The network announced 5 new comedies, 4 new dramas, a first event series, and an animated comedy from Seth MacFarlane.
Some of today’s most inventive directors working in film have smoothly segued from motion pictures to series TV and their new shows have found a home at Fox. What caught my attention were the sci-fi, fantasy shows bearing the names of Abrams, Shyamalan, Kurtzman and Orci.
Among the network’s lineup is M. Night Shyamalan’s new event series Wayward Pines. Set to premiere in 2014 and based on the best-selling novel, “Pines,” by Blake Crouch, Wayward Pines is an intense, mind-bending thriller in which nothing is what it seems. Also on the Fox schedule is the...

Fox is developing a pair of miniseries. Or, since "miniseries" is a bad word in television these days, "long-form event series."
The two projects, at least one of which will air in 2014, are "Wayward Pines," a thriller executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and "Blood Brothers," about the West Point class of 1861 that was divided by the Civil War.
"'Wayward Pines' and 'Blood Brothers' represent exactly the kind of high-impact, 10- to 12-part events we set out to develop when we entered the limited series business," Fox Entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly says. "These two series are the first of many big ideas, big names and big talent that you can anticipate will be on our air in the next 12 to 24 months."

For American Idol (TV) fans, nothing beats a concert packed with live music, psychedelic lights, and their very own Top Ten belting out the season's most popular Idol performances. This time, however, there's no judges, no tireless, never-ending commercials (except for the occasional, strategically placed plugs for Idol sponsored products), and no abbreviated songs. This year's Top Ten made Chicago their second stop in the 2012 American Idols Live! tour following an opening night in Detroit, Mi. Fresh out of rehearsals in Los Angeles, the tour is young, and the fatigue of a rigorous travel schedule and an inevitable bout or two of homesickness has not set in with it's cast. Full of excitement and anticipation, they are steadily making their way across America to meet their fans and spread some Idol love. On this occasion, three of the Idols - Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet and Skylar Laine sat down with...

After The Playboy Club was cancelled by NBC, Playboy's Hugh Hefner wrote, "It should have been on cable, aimed at a more adult audience." Chad Hodge, the TV series' creator and executive producer, agrees and hopes that the show will find new life there. Hodge is a Chicago native who previously worked on shows like Tru Calling and created CW's Runaway.
He recently told Out, "I think NBC gave up too soon... Had NBC stuck with the show I think many more millions would have eventually shown up. Those who found the show realized it wasn't what they expected -- it was good. It was entertaining, sophisticated, and dazzling. It dealt with social mores and moral ethics. And it was an intentional guilty pleasure."
Hodge is hopeful however that another NBC channel might still rescue Playboy Club. He said, "For weeks now, I've been saying...

The main thing that Chad Hodge wants you to know about his upcoming NBC series The Playboy Club is that it's not about the centerfolds. When Hodge, who last created The CW drama Runaway, was first approached by the studio to do a show about Hugh Hefner's famous Playboy Bunnies, his reaction was, "Is this going to be a scripted version of The Girls Next Door? No, thank you."
But that was before he knew about the rather significant difference between Bunnies and the Playmates. Hef's Bunnies...

News today about TV shows you might see next fall...
Amber Heard is in discussions to take one of the lead roles in NBC's drama "Playboy." The drama is set at a Playboy Club in the 1960s; Heard, presumably, will be playing a Bunny in the show created by Chad Hodge ("Tru Calling," "Runaway"). Heard's credits include The CW's "Hidden Palms," "Pineapple Express" and "The Stepfather." [Variety]
ABC has greenlit a bevy of drama pilots, including projects from "Desperate Housewives" creator Marc Cherry ("Hallelujah," about a battle between good and evil, with a gospel choir acting as a sort of Greek Chorus) and "Paranormal Activity" director Oren Peli ("The River," about the search for a missing adventurer in the Amazon). "Sex and the City" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" creator Darren Star also got the greenlight for a drama presentation called "Bitches," a soap about a fallen former mean girl in Dallas.

NBC is putting together a period drama set in the 1960s at a Playboy club, according to Variety. Playboy (catchy name!) “would center on a group of women working as Playboy bunnies in the New York Club,” which would serve as a lens for the “changing mores” of the time. Chad Hodge (Runaway, Tru Calling) is the executive producer.
Iiiiiinteresting. Network television doesn’t have a great track record for period pieces in the last several years — CBS’s Swingtown met a premature demise, Life on Mars never took off — but of course, Mad Men is the gold standard now.

"Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" hits shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray in November, and Universal has released the full specs for every iteration of Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.
While the movie didn't quite meet expectations at the box office, it was difficult to find anyone who didn't have high praise for Wright's kinetic, effects-driven celebration of everything that made O'Malley's comic so great. And like any good DVD/Blu-Ray release, the movie comes packed with some cool bonus features, too.
Personally, I'm a little intrigued by the deleted scenes and alternate footage, as I managed to sneak into an early workprint of the film and, well... the ending of the unfinished version of the film was quite different from the theater cut I saw.

While we haven't heard too much on the upcoming Marvel adaptation of Runaways (since Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist director Peter Sollett came on board to helm the project), the movie appears to be quietly revving up in the form of casting the young leads who will embody writer Brian K. Vaughan's ragtag team of supervillain-children-on-the-run.
You'd think casting an established comic series would be fairly run-of-the-mill - find decent actors that match their illustrated counterparts and you practically have the movie in the can. HBO is developing a biopic of former beauty queen, singer and celebrity pitchwoman Anita Bryant, who is known mostly for her work as an anti-gay activist.
"Sex and the City" creator Darren Star is on board to direct the film, which is being written by "Runaway" creator Chad Hodge. Star also is executive producing with Dennis Erdman.

By age 18, Bryant, who was born to a religious Oklahoma family in 1940, had won Arthur Godfrey's talent show and a Miss Oklahoma pageant and finished as second runner-up for Miss America.

By age 18, Bryant, who was born to a religious Oklahoma family in 1940, had won Arthur Godfrey's talent show and a Miss Oklahoma pageant and finished as second runner-up for Miss America.
In 1959 and '60, she was a major pop star with three million-selling records. After marrying and settling in Florida, she reverted to Christian music and, projecting a wholesome image, began...

She spent three years at Darren Star Prods., where she shepherded ABC's "Cashmere Mafia" and the CW's "Runaway."

AMC is getting a new development maven.
Former Brillstein-Grey TV co-topper Susie Fitzgerald is joining the cable network behind "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad," sources said.
Her title is believed to be senior vp scripted series, though it still is being worked out.
It is understood that Fitzgerald will spearhead series development but won't be a direct replacement for senior vp scripted series and miniseries Christina Wayne, who abruptly resigned from AMC in February after more than three years there.
Joel Stillerman, senior vp original programming, production and digital content, has been hands-on in the development process and will continue to do so, sources said.
AMC declined comment.
Expectations are extremely high for AMC's series development following the critical acclaim of its first two shows, "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad," both of which landed multiple Emmy nominations last week, including for best drama series. The network recently greenlighted its third series,...

This past development season, Hodge created the drama Runaway, which became the first project to get a pilot order by the new CW network. Sony Pictures TV and studio-based Darren Star Prods. produced Runaway, which was picked up to series. Donnie Wahlberg and Leslie Hope starred on the show about a father (Wahlberg) who goes on the lam with his family after he is framed for murder. In addition to writing the pilot, Hodge co-executive produced the series. In what seems to be a trend among the networks, another of the season's new serial dramas has bitten the dust. CBS pulled the plug on Smith, NBC's Kidnapped will end after 13 episodes, and things don't look good for Fox's Vanished. Now, CW has announced that they're joining in and have cancelled their low-rated Runaway dramatic serial. Runaway was one of only two new series on CW (all of the rest of the CW shows were culled from either the WB or Upn).
Runaway focuses on a family of fugitives that seeks to prove the innocence of the father, Paul Rader (played by Donnie Wahlberg), after he is unjustly accused of murder. The show also stars Leslie Hope (previously seen as Jack Bauer's wife on 24 and the Attorney General on Commander in Chief), was created by Chad Hodge, and was executive produced by Darren Star and Ed Zuckerman.

Runaway has run aground. The CW drama has been axed after four airings. The series from Sony Pictures Television, revolving around a family who goes on the lam after the father is wrongly accused of murder, opened to weak numbers in the Monday 9 p.m. slot behind 7th Heaven late last month. CW shifted Heaven and Runaway from Monday to Sunday last week, but the change didn't help Runaway, which averaged 1.8 million viewers in its last airing. CW has pulled the show entirely and will fill the Sunday 9 p.m. slot with repeats for the time being.

After moving Runaway from Monday to Sunday, the CW has put the struggling freshman drama out of its misery effective immediately. Season to-date, Runaway ranks dead-last among all primetime series with 1.9 million viewers and a 0.7 rating/ 1 share, according to Nielsen Media Research data. NBC, meanwhile, will delay the fourth-season premiere of drama Las Vegas until Friday, Oct. 27, giving temporary 9 p.m. occupant 1 vs. 100 a chance to benefit from lead-in Deal or No Deal.

NEW YORK -- Heroes might turn out to be just that for NBC, with the new drama premiering strongly and leading the peacock to a nightly win in the demo even as Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Deal or No Deal fell from their premieres last week. Meanwhile, the CW had a rocky premiere for its first original series, the 9 p.m. drama Runaway, which drew a barely-there 2.2 million viewers and 0.8 rating/2 share in its target adults 18-34 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. At 8 p.m., the 11th-season premiere of 7th Heaven (4.2 million, 1.7/5 in 18-34) got off to a slow start on its new network, dropping more than 1 million viewers from last fall's opener on WB Network. At 9 p.m., Heroes delivered 14.1 million viewers and a 5.9/14 in the adults 18-49 demo. While it was beaten in viewers during the hour by CBS' 9 p.m. comedy Two and a Half Men (15.3 million, 4.8/12), Heroes built on its 8 p.m. Deal or No Deal lead-in (13 million, 3.8/10) by more than 1 million viewers and two rating points. Heroes finished the night a nose ahead of CBS' 10 p.m. stalwart CSI: Miami (17.8 million, 5.8/15) in the demo, though "CSI" prevailed in total viewers.

After contemplating the new fall television season for 18 consecutive days -- during which time at least 2,000 questions were asked and answered -- you might think a person would emerge from the experience as some kind of expert on the subject. Maybe I am, but after attending my 40th Television Critics Assn. press tour, I realize that the only thing I know for sure is what preoccupies the minds of those who toil in the biz and those who cover them. This summer as critics and scribes braved the blazing Pasadena heat and the meat-locker freezing temperatures in the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel ballrooms where the nearly three-week-long tour was held, they were not one and the same. TV editors and critics, looking for a trend story, understandably seized on the fact that there will be more new serialized dramas than at any time in recent memory. TV execs worried about an FCC seemingly run amok on indecency issues. Returning serial dramas include Fox's 24 and Prison Break, CW's Veronica Mars and ABC's Lost. Arguably, ABC's Desperate Housewives also fits into the category, though not so much in its second season. Serialized newcomers are ABC's The Nine, CBS' Smith and Jericho, Fox's Vanished, NBC's Kidnapped and Heroes and the CW's Runaway. Plots are being juggled like glowing balls at a Cirque de Soleil performance.

ABC's Brothers & Sisters, NBC's Friday Night Lights and the CW's Runaway are among the upcoming primetime series that have earned the seal of approval from the Family Friendly Programming Forum, a coalition of blue-chip advertisers that helps fund the development of family-oriented programming for the broadcast networks. A total of five new FFPF-backed primetime series were picked up to series for the networks' 2006-07 season, marking a new record for the organization. The forum provides seed money to develop "promising family-friendly scripts" through its Script Development Fund initiative as part of its goal to "secure family-friendly viewing options for audiences across the U.S." in primetime from 8-10 p.m. The other two new forum-backed shows are ABC's Ugly Betty and Notes From the Underbelly. In addition, the FFPF noted that two other programs it supports -- Gilmore Girls and Everybody Hates Chris -- have been renewed for 2006-07 by the CW.
