I don't know if any of this was the least bit true but ...

It was fascinating and very entertaining. I just happened across it one afternoon after I got home from college classes back in 1981 and I don't think I'll ever completely forget it. It included a story about a woman who got a phone call from a relative, but the phone call kept breaking up. When she hung up the phone the next call she got was to inform her that the relative she just spoke to had died a few minutes ago - before her telephone call. The special went on to speculate that spirits might be able to communicate via electronic equipment, thus the "telephone call from the dead". The episode also talked a little about Edison's work on trying to contact the dead. There was also a man who had researched what Edison had said on the subject - it wasn't something Edison documented or spoke about that much. This man built a machine based on Edison's work plus some of his own speculations. He took it to a cemetery in the middle of the night and turned on the recorder. When he took it home and played back the recording you could hear what seemed to be voices.

It's too bad this interesting old series isn't available on DVD. The episodes had good production values and featured a large number of rather off beat and bizarre but interesting topics.

Talking With The Dead
AaronCapenBanner1 October 2014
Intriguing episode focuses on the phenomena of spirit communication, whether it be unintentional(people who claim to hear footsteps where there was no one, or a woman getting a phone call from a deceased relative) or intentional, as a group of spiritualists use modern technology to try and contact various spirits, spending a lot of time in a spooky graveyard. Some voices or sounds may have been recorded, but it is still wide open to suggestion and interpretation. This segment is at times a bit silly to be honest, but does feature a most striking and haunting closing scene that works well, and ends this uneven outing with stylish aplomb.

Silly.

Warning: Spoilers
Silly silly silly episode. Well there is interesting beginning about some one talking to their dead cousin on the phone and finding out later she just died. There is talks about noises bumps etc. There is the revelation about Edison making a spirit telephone. Some experts try to re-create the spirit telephone. Of course the reserchers take the phone out to a grave yard around midnight. The machine lights up and looks silly. The questions asked were silly. The whole situation was silly. There was little something with the recordings. The rest of the speculation of the recording was silly. In Search of Spirit Voices was silly, but intriguing. Not one of the better In Search of. In Search Of... "Spirit Voices" (1981)

This episode certainly isn't "great" but it contains some of the funniest moments in the series. Basically this episode takes a look at whether the dead can communicate through electronics and even talks about Thomas Edison and whether he was able to contact the dead. We get one good story from a woman who claims to have gotten a phone call from her dead cousin. The second half of the episode takes a look at a group who try to communicate with the dead and this is where the laughs come from. Just wait until you hear some of the questions they ask when trying to reach out to the dead. Is Thomas Edison with you? Is there a better way to communicate with you? I'm sorry but it really made me laugh.
