From “Carol” to “Bridge of Spies,” here are the films and the actors who scored nominations this year! Watch the live broadcast of the ceremony on TNT and TBS Jan. 30! Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading RoleBRYAN Cranston, “Trumbo”Cranston is commandingly eccentric in this take on Hollywood’s blacklisting of suspected communists, capturing all of screenwriter Dalton Trumbo’s bravado and obstinance (even while naked in a bathtub), yet managing to rein in the quirks and outbursts that could have rendered him a caricature. Johnny Depp, “Black Mass”Never mind that Depp has said he never wants to win an Oscar—he may not have a choice. As real-life Boston mobster Whitey Bulger, Depp buries both his features and his humanity beneath an ice-cold veneer of venality and sociopathy. Even as he lulls both his victims and the audience into a sense of security, we understand...

From “Key & Peele” to “Transparent,” here are the series and actors who scored nominations this year! Watch the live broadcast of the ceremony on TNT and TBS Jan. 30! Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or MiniseriesIDRIS Elba, “Luther”Watching Elba in “Luther,” you can’t help but feel the guy is redefining confidence itself. He brings unparalleled swagger to the titular hardboiled detective, but the same magnetic sure-footedness to those moments that demand vulnerability, obsessive behavior, and true grief. In its gritty final outing, the show allowed the actor to ramp up all the glowering and smoldering that makes his performance downright iconic. Ben Kingsley, “Tut”As the scheming advisor to history’s favorite pharaoh, Kingsley shows enough villainous restraint to keep the Spike miniseries in nominators’ minds—and no small wonder when you watch him gleefully scheme, plot, and betray over the course of three episodes.

Director Ridley Scott makes the most of an excellent script and a first-rate star for a scintillating sci-fi trip to the red planet
Proving conclusively that it really is all about the writing, Ridley Scott’s most enjoyable film in years reassures us that the creakiness of Prometheus, the cack-handed contrivance of The Counsellor and the sheer stodginess of Exodus: Gods and Kings were genetically rooted in their respective screenplays. Scott may not have the best eye for a decent script (he thought A Good Year read like a charming Russell Crowe vehicle), but when the right words are on the page he can visualise them like no other. From the creative back and forth of Hampton Fancher and David Peoples on Blade Runner, through the genius of Callie Khouri’s Thelma and Louise screenplay, to this terrifically crowd-pleasing adaptation of Andy Weir’s book by The Cabin in the Woods creator Drew Goddard,...

Director Baltasar Kormákur on Everest, reviews, and creating a mountain on screen...
Now in wide release in UK cinemas, following a week-long IMAX-exclusive presentation is Everest. The film is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, who previously gave us the hugely enjoyable 2 Guns. And he spared us some time to talk about his new movie...
Obviously this is based on the 1996 climbing accident. Shortly after that happened, we had the documentary, Everest, which was directed by David Breashears. We’ve had several other films looking at this incident, particularly documentaries; what’s the advantage of something that’s fictionalised?
First of all, to be able to create the mountain, we need quite a budget. And to be able to shoot high up, and be able to capture the mountain the way we wanted to capture it. I’m not saying they didn’t get shots of the mountain, but that’s a different,...

In collecting my impressions about “Everest,” which opened this year’s Venice Film Festival, I started thinking not about other epic adventure movies but about HBO’s “Show Me a Hero,” the recently-completed six-part miniseries about the battle over low-income housing in Yonkers, New York. The two couldn’t be further apart in terms of genre, but both projects are true stories adapted from non-fiction. (Even though Jon Krakauer is a character in “Everest,” this movie isn’t an adaptation of “Into Thin Air”; the credited sources are Beck Weathers’ “Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest” and...

There it calls to her, a burning red beacon of life in the wasteland that was once Berlin. It’s a nightclub, but, as its name suggests, perhaps quite a lot more. Nelly (Nina Hoss) hopes her husband is working within; perhaps she hopes he’s not. Her close friend has already warned her to avoid him, but she’s been through too much trauma to extinguish her faith in the familiar. Left for dead at a concentration camp, her face was scarred beyond recognition. Her reconstructive surgery was not wholly successful; glancing her appearance in a broken mirror, she withdraws in shock. So much of the film hinges on how Hoss reacts, or doesn’t react, and this reflected glance sets up the stakes of the film – who is she now, and does her past have any bearing on her future?
These immediate postwar years, historically, centered around grief and rebuilding.

The horror lover inside of me wants to defend The Lazarus Effect against other mainstream failures, but the critic in me can’t let that happen. It’s a mess, but not on the catastrophic level of so many other generically churned-out teenage slashers (like Ouija or The Pyramid).
Director David Gelb strives to fashion together something more, something that blends the conflicting ideologies of religion and science in a heavyweight debate, but scribes Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater didn’t get that memo. The talents of Gelb are outweighed by the overbearing redundancy of Dawson and Slater’s nostalgically horrendous script, as the fires of Horror Film Hell engulf yet another misguided victim. Blumhouse is so close to something special with The Lazarus Effect, but unfortunately, it’s still oh-so-far from heavenly.

Ridley Scott's latest epic is a beautiful film. It's masterfully shot. It's wonderfully acted. The production value is second to none. Like any well-made period piece, it has an element to it where you truly feel transported to this place and time. Exodus: Gods and Kings is a good movie. Thing is, it could've been a great one.
Exodus is one of those films that, despite a running time of about two and a half hours, would've benefited from a few additional scenes. Unlike other films with a similar issue, though, there's not much fat to point at and say "Yeah, that should've been trimmed to make way for something more important." Everything that's there should be there, and yet there should still be more.
One place where this becomes clear is in the early stages of us getting to know our hero, Moses, who is played by Christian Bale.

This fall, Lifetime will take an uncharacteristic trip into horror lit with Big Driver, an adaptation of Stephen King’s same-named short story from his 2010 collection Full Dark, No Stars. Maria Bello stars in the grim and brutal pic, about an author who is brutally raped and assaulted by a truck driver, only to survive and return seeking vengeance.
The project is an unusual one for Lifetime, though the network has been branching out in recent years with increasingly dramatic original series like Witches of East End and The Lottery. Big Driver is also, like many of Lifetime’s programs, a tale of female empowerment led by a particularly steely protagonist.
Now, the suitably dark first trailer for the movie, which also stars Olympia Dukakis, Joan Gett, Ann Dowd and Will Harris, has arrived online. Check it out below, along with the official synopsis for the adaptation.

We recently reported that Stephen King’s A Good Marriage, from his 2010 four-novella collection Full Dark, No Stars, will likely hit theaters this October, and now another novella from the 2010 collection is getting adapted, this time as a TV movie.
Set to be an original TV movie on the Lifetime channel and expected to air sometime this fall, THR reports that Big Driver (based on the novella of the same name) will star Maria Bello as mystery author Tess Thorne, and if you’ve read the novella, then you know the actress is playing a character that goes through a truly disturbing night before undergoing vast changes of her own in her vengeful journey. Olympia Dukakis, Joan Jett, and Will Harris will co-star in the film, which we’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated on as it moves along in production.

Remember Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) inspired tactics to gain more recruits for her army in the climatic frames of last week’s episode? Well it looks as though her methods are continuing to work. As whispers and doubts regarding the passing of King Joffrey still heavily linger across Westeros, the ‘Mother of Dragons’ has bigger fish to fry. As Game of Thrones rolls closer to its mid-season point, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss show no signs of applying the brakes much to all our viewing pleasure.

The big payoff moment. The money shot. The Omg/Wtf/Nsfw scene in horror. These are the moments that define films. The moment that either grosses and disgusts or shocks the audience in such a way that they have to come back for the sequel. Here are our Top 13 Wtf Moments in Horror.
We're going to try to keep this to relatively mainstream films. That's not to say that some lesser known indies haven't had some shocking moments, but things seem that much more disturbing when the movie in question reaches a wide audience.
Beginning with our honorable mentions, we've got to include I Spit on Your Grave, one of the most censored and banned films of all times. Camille Keaton played Jennifer Hills who was raped for the better part of the first half of the film. Plenty of Nsfw moments there. Also those infamous shit-eaters in Salo: 120 Days of Sodom were certainly shocking.

Stepping out for some delicious eats, Robin Wright and Ben Foster showed up at the Adobe Restaurant in Vancouver, Canada on Sunday (February 2).
The “Moneyball” starlet and her handsome fiancé looked to be in good spirits as Ben fiddled with his mobile phone while Robin read a novel titled “Left For Dead.”
As for her hit show “House of Cards,” for which she won a Golden Globe, Robin sounds like she’s really found her sweet spot.
Wright told Details, “I liked the way [executive producer] David Fincher described her to me: strong, calculating, Machiavellian. He said, ‘You have to contain all of those adjectives in a marble bust. If Claire's moving or flailing, she loses her foundation. The "Psych" remake episode, "Cloudy ... With a Chance of Improvement," was a huge treat for long-time fans of the show. It took a so-so Season 1 episode and spruced up the plot a bit, plus brought back a cavalcade of "Psych" guest stars and fun references.
The Jackson Hale murder is still at the core of the episode, but this time, instead of a jealous production assistant, the murderer is a morning show anchor who thinks gigolo Jackson is sleeping with his wife -- and wannabe-weatherman Ruben Leonard gets caught in the crossfire.
There was a lot to spy for the eagle-eyed fan and we've compiled a list for you (which may not even be complete), but if you'd prefer to figure it all out for yourself without help, skip the "Eye Spy" section at the bottom.

The sci-fi “Riddick” is out on Blu-ray and DVD today. And Latino-Review has the exclusive interview with Danny Blanco Hall, one of the mercenaries from the movie.
Here’s the synopsis:
Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick’s past.
The David Twohy-directed movie also stars Vin Diesel, Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Dave Bautista and Jordi Molla.
We discussed about the trilogy, playing a merc and the difference between doing live-action versus voicing/mo-cap in video games.
Check out the interview below.
Latino-Review: How were you approached for this project and why were you attracted to it?

So horrible! Expectant mother Eva Casara, 17, was shot and robbed in a Chicago suburb on Christmas Day. Her assailants left her bleeding on the sidewalk without a chance of survival, but her unborn baby was able to be delivered alive. The very premature newborn continues to fight for her life.
Eva Casara, 17, was about 25 weeks pregnant when she was shot and left for dead by muggers in Dolton, Ill. on Dec. 25. Police found the teen barely alive, bleeding in the snow with a horrific gunshot wound to the head and transported her to a nearby hospital, where doctors were able to keep her on life support long enough to deliver her baby successfully: a little girl weighing only 1 1/2 pounds.

Riddick, played by Vin Diesel, in the newest Pitch Black sequel titled simply Riddick directed by David Twohy (interview here). Left for dead on a barren planet, Riddick ends up hunted by a bevy of hungry bounty hunters while fending off viscous native creatures. So how is this one? Better than 2004's Chronicles of Riddick or 2000's Pitch Black, or much worse? How is Katee Sackhoff as one of the bounty hunters? If you've seen it, leave a comment with your own thoughts on Twohy's Riddick. Spoiler Warning: We strongly urge everyone to actually see the film before reading ahead, as there may be spoilers below. We also encourage all commenters to keep major spoilers from the film to a minimum, if possible. However, this...

Trained to kill. Left for Dead. Back for more. Thus goes the tagline on the new poster for Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, his action sequel to the movie that began life as a fake trailer.
The franchise has quickly gained something of a cult status, and Danny Trejo is reprising his eponymous role in just a few weeks time. The latest trailer surfaced just over a month ago, teasing plenty more action sequences to entertain the original’s fans. And now Fandango have launched the latest poster, which sees Trejo alongside both the good guys and the bad.
In Machete Kills, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent Machete, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread...

Machete, Robert Rodriguez’s pulpy, preposterous action series, is possibly the most unlikely franchise in cinematic history, but I could not be more excited for the second serving of guts and glory that we’ll be getting this October with an awesomely-titled second instalment, Machete Kills.
Starring Danny Trejo, the Machete series follows the absurd, gory adventures of a deadly Mexican ex-federale. The series originated with a fake trailer attached to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s exploitation double feature Grindhouse and somehow made the jump to the big screen with 2010′s Machete. Now, against all odds, we’re getting a bigger, ballsier sequel with a ridiculously stacked cast and a plotline even more gonzo than Machete‘s border war between Mexican illegals and border vigilantes.
In Machete Kills, our lethal protagonist, who has become a spy in the time since his last adventure, is sent on an impossible mission...

Vin Diesel is back as Richard B. Riddick, going back to the anti-heroes roots, and delivering a story very reminiscent of Pitch Black, what with the whole alien planet and swarm of vicious monster shenanigans. Yahoo has debuted the first clip from the movie, with Riddick taking on a very impressive CG beastie, while also revealing himself as a bit of a dog person. Synopsis: Left for dead on a sun-scorched planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Activating an emergency beacon alerts two ships: one carrying a new breed of mercenary, the other captained by a man from Riddick's past. Released: 6th September...

Chicago – Around a year ago, I named Shawn Ryan’s excellent “Last Resort” the most-promising new show of the Fall season. I think I need to relabel that this year to “creatively promising,” for while I knew Ryan and his crew here had a chance to produce something special, I also worried that ABC was dooming it on Thursday nights.
Lo and behold, before the show had a chance to develop an audience and work through a few creative growing pains, it was gone. Now, all 13 episodes have been rather unceremoniously released on DVD with no HD option. When the story is written about how the great writers left the broadcast networks behind for good for cable is written, “Last Resort” gets a chapter.
Rating: 4.0/5.0

David Hayter, the screenwriter of films such as X-Men, X2, and Watchmen, has been hired by Lakeshore Entertainment to write the script for the big screen adaptation of the graphic novel The Sword.
The comic was created by Jonathan and Joshua Luna, and it's a stylistic, action-packed tale of vengeance. It tells the story of a young paraplegic, Dara Brighton, "who leads an ordinary existence until her family is brutally murdered by a mysterious trio, possessed of god-like, supernatural abilities. Left for dead, Dara discovers an ancient sword belonging to her father, indicating that his past may have been much longer, and stranger, than she could have ever suspected. The sword not only restores her ability to walk, but it grants her a constantly evolving array of spectacular physical powers. It was revealed back in February that Lakeshore Entertainment had decided to adapt The Sword - a 24 issue series published by Image Comics - but now Watchmen and X-2 scrib David Hayter has been brought in to write the adaptation. As the site points out, the story "follows Dara Brighton, a young paraplegic who leads an ordinary existence until her family is brutally murdered by a mysterious trio, possessed of god-like, supernatural abilities. Left for dead, Dara discovers her father's ancient sword that not only restores her ability to walk, but grants her a constantly evolving array of spectacular physical powers. Coming off the back of the hugely successful Fast and Furious 6, which continues to play strong at the global box office, Vin Diesel will soon be returning to the multiplex in his other long-awaited sequel, Riddick.
This one, we’ve been waiting for a while longer than Fast and Furious 6, and the anticipation is definitely running on high.
A few weeks back, we saw a great new international trailer, along with a rather awesome poster that will be heading to Comic-Con with the film this month. And now Diesel has taken to Facebook once more, sharing with us the first TV spot ahead of its small screen debut at the start of next week.
The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered.

While most general audiences didn't really take to the whole “Grindhouse” conceit concocted by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino in 2007, it hasn't left Rodriguez any less enthused. In 2010, Rodriguez turned one of the faux trailers that accompanied “Grindhouse,” “Machete,” into blood-splattered feature-length life. While the film was a modest success (Rodriguez's movies never cost much money), he is back with a sequel, the aptly titled “Machete Kills.” And by the looks of the trailer, it's going to be a whole bunch of drive-in fun. You don't get a lot of plot from the clip, but you still see the basics: Machete (craggy-faced treasure Danny Trejo) is shot down from a noose and handed a telephone. “This is Machete,” he growls into the receiver. Then there's a whole bunch of action-packed nonsense, wonderfully narrated in the same style as the “Grindhouse” trailer: “Trained to kill… Left for dead… Back for more.

Treading territory quite similar to Pitch Black, Vin Diesel returns as the anti hero who made his name with Riddick. We've seen snippets of David Twohy's long in production sci-fi sequel before, but now this full trailer gives us a better look at what to expect. We've have no indication of how this ties into Riddick's last appearance, The Chronicles of Riddick (which became bogged down with an overblown mythology), but it's good to see the character brought back to basics. "Right Turn or Left for Dead?"
Great question, and a necessary one after Juliet discovered Shawn's secret during "Deez Nups." Did Shawn make a mistake he could be regretting for the rest of his life? Or did the revelation break down the final wall preventing Shawn and Juliet from really knowing each other?
I really loved the structure of this episode. Setting up the reality in tandem with Shawn's imagined outcome was brilliant and almost had us guessing if Shules had really managed to work things out.
Life is messy, and therefore Shules and their relationship has to be messy too. More importantly, each world gave us a glimpse into the real growth that Shawn has undertaken as a result of his relationship with Juliet, which it necessarily took both realities to see.
Let's start with the reality he'd created in which he hadn't given Juliet the jacket.

After last week's "Psych" bombshell, where Juliet figured out that Shawn has been lying all along about being psychic, things work themselves out rather interestingly in the next episode, titled "Right Turn or Left For Dead."
Executive producer Steve Franks tells Zap2it that the episode isn't "It's a Wonderful Life"-y, as most fans have guessed from the episode description. But it's sort of along those lines.
"It's a little bit of 'Sliding Doors,'" says Franks. "Shawn gets to see, in a way, what would've happened if the events had not played out, if he'd not come clean that night. He gets to see the way things would've happened and the way they did happen."
We're very intrigued. And while Franks can't divulge too many details, he does say it's an awesome episode. While he found last week's cliffhanger so "heartbreaking," the follow-up episode is maybe even better.

As I prepare for the season three finale of The Walking Dead, I decided to list off my favourite moments so far. Anyone who listens to our Walking Dead Podcast knows I am by far, the most positive, and while I acknowledge the many things the series does wrong (all in script form), I can’t deny how much I love the show. Here are the ten best moments of the first half of season three. I’ll be posting the second half of the list on the day of the season three finale.

In my first few weeks at college (sometime back around the Mesolithic era), I remember being flushed with the joy of sitting around a table with friends, and together, gleefully over-analysing the shows that we had loved as children with our newfound, half-misunderstood academic jargon.
We handily rationalised away He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (1983) as the colourful delusions of a spoiled young socialite, Prince Adam, who was clearly a raging drug addict.* As we saw it, Adam – after taking some ‘Power of Grayskull’ (total euphemism) – would lose himself in a world of paranoid hallucinations, only to see his personal demons made manifest as hairy bodybuilders and hideous fluorescent beasts. In fact, poor Skeletor was probably a sponsor Adam’s parents had hired to clean up his act.
