Two complete idiots visit Portwenn.
planktonrules25 January 2020
The notion of a dumb person in Portwenn certainly isn't unusual...in fact, it's a given. But in this episode, two complete prats arrive and throw everything into a tizzy.

The first visitor is a doctor who has arrived to test Doc Martin's diagnostic skills....which seems like a waste of time since this is the doctor's biggest strength. In fact, the visiting doctor didn't seem nearly as skilled and perhaps a bit dim. The second is Mark Mylow, who was a police constable who was a bit less annoying and dim than Penhale...though this isn't exactly setting the bar very high, is it?! Together, they use their limited skills and even more limited intelligence to investigate a case involving stolen farm equipment. Hopefully the pair will remember to breathe.

Seeing Mylow again was a shock in this episode because he was a regular on the show long ago....and I never knew why he left the show. And, IMDB doesn't seem to indicate either why he'd leave a successful program. But this time, the writer dumbed down his character more than he used to be...to the point that he was practically a talking turnip. If you like seeing two Penhales, then you'll be thrilled. I just wanted the two to wander off somewhere never to return, as these two characters seem awfully broadly written.

Overall, a decent episode whose quality depends on how much you like watching dumb policeman. I found them a big annoying, hence my slightly lower than average (for this series) score of 7.

Let Him Do His Job

Doc Martin is one of the most competent physicians ever portrayed in film. He is also on the spectrum and incredibly abrasive. So even people whose lives he has saved can't speak well of him. He is subjected to a ridiculous test by a questionable physician who sends in people with contrived symptoms. Secondly, we have the appearance of Mark Mylow, the former police officer before PC Penhale. He is a windbag who left his job to become a plumber in Poland. He decides to take over, dismissing everything Penhale has accomplished (which is very little, but then). There's more but I found this episode superb.

Dumber and Dumber
TheFearmakers29 July 2023
When John Marquez. Replaced Steven Wright as the town's vapid, clumsy, bumbling PC (British term for Police Constable) on DOC MARTIN, it was obviously intended that the physical comedy be heightened on the series since Wright's PC Mylow was equally brooding as he was silly while Marquez's PC Penhale makes Inspector Clouseau seem like Dirty Harry...

Neither were perfect characters... Mylow's sexual problems were just odd while Penhale more or less goes from a goofy to completely unrealistic character...

But now they're together, and somehow Penhale manages to be the smarter one, investigating a stolen tractor, which is actually the b-story to Doc having to once again go through the steps of proving he can be a legit doctor by reluctantly cowtowing to those beneath him...

So this episode is as if Three's Company had Don Knotts and The Ropers together, which... well... wouldn't really be necessary, nor was Mylow's return but, it's nice to see him again since those first four seasons... known as the Aunt Joan years... in which he was half of, are the best of the series.
