Missed Potential
elias-3401328 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
An abandoned high school with walkers not actual being the threat was a great concept However it was a wasted opportunity. It could've easily gone up if the high school was filled with the dead or even a pack of dogs instead of just one. As the group splits up the episode just becomes more pointless. I don't see any purpose the episode filled except the end credits scene. It's 4 episodes in now and the kids are still trying to runaway. Just kill walkers already! It becomes boring. When you have 45 minutes with just the same people it can become very tedious.

Warning: Spoilers
Parts of the this episode was down right stupid like the dancing. Other parts like showing the kids evolving into survivors was better. The acting from some people is still pretty bad

The setting of the high school is utilized to explore themes of lost youth and the stark contrast between the world that was and the world that is
fernandoschiavi6 May 2024
The Endlings take shelter from a storm in an abandoned high school where Felix and Huck take the opportunity to try to change Elton and Hope's minds so that they can get the group to turn around. While searching for supplies, Hope and Huck encounter a wolf stalking the school's hallways, but they manage to escape unharmed and find food supplies in the pantry of the school's fallout shelter. Felix and Elton gather water and investigate what turns out to be the wolf's activities while Iris finds herself drawn to the picture of a rebellious student Sabina while enjoying imagining high school life and dancing with Silas. However, the wolf and some walkers drive Iris and Silas into the fallout shelter where they discover that several survivors living there have perished and turned, including Sabina.

The others manage to rescue the two, but Silas flies into a rage, beating a walker to death with his bare hands and injuring Elton when he tries to stop him. Felix puts down the other walkers and snaps Silas out of it and it's revealed that the violent altercation that he keeps remembering is with his father whom Silas supposedly murdered. With Elton's dedication to the mission wavering, Felix attempts to enlist his help to turn the group around at the Mississippi River, their last best chance to do so while Hope, after recalling fighting with her father before he left, becomes more determined than ever to find him. Iris convinces the horrified Silas not to leave and Elton takes a group photo of the Endlings. In a post-credits scene, Dr. Lyla Belshaw performs experiments on a number of zombified test subjects at the CRM's research facility, one of whom is revealed to be one of her and Leo Bennett's own colleagues, Dr. Samuel Abbott.

Episode four of "The Walking Dead: World Beyond," titled "The Wrong End of a Telescope," blends survival horror with deeper explorations of group dynamics and personal discovery, set against the backdrop of an abandoned high school. This setting not only provides new challenges for the group but also serves as a poignant reminder of the youth and normalcy the characters have been deprived of by the apocalypse.

The episode starts with the group taking refuge in the high school, seeking shelter and supplies but finding much more than they bargained for. The deserted halls and classrooms, littered with relics of a time before the collapse, evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and loss among the young survivors. As they split up to scavenge, each character is confronted with reminders of their past lives. This is especially true for Hope, who finds herself in a science lab that stirs memories of her mother and reignites her guilt over past misdeeds. This scene is not only critical for character development but also for setting the emotional tone of the episode.

In their exploration, the group encounters a new kind of threat: b**by traps set by other survivors who had previously taken refuge in the school. This leads to tense and suspenseful moments, highlighting the ever-present danger of the world around them. These sequences are effectively staged, providing jump scares and a sense of imminent threat that keeps the tension high. The interaction between the characters during these crises does well to showcase their evolving relationships and the growing trust and dependencies forming among them.

Critically, "The Wrong End of a Telescope" succeeds in advancing the overarching narrative while delivering a self-contained story that is both engaging and reflective. The setting of the high school is utilized to explore themes of lost youth and the stark contrast between the world that was and the world that is. However, while the episode excels in atmospheric tension and character introspection, it occasionally struggles with pacing, particularly in the middle segments where the emotional reflections seem to stall the narrative progression.

Overall, the episode stands out for its emotional depth and clever use of setting. It continues to build the characters in meaningful ways, allowing the audience to connect with their personal struggles and triumphs. Despite some pacing issues, "The Wrong End of a Telescope" is a solid addition to the series, effectively blending horror elements with poignant drama and character development.

Can this show get any dumber or poorly written?
mhorg201826 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm done. The acting remains horrible. How is the makeup on these actors so perfect? Don't they ever sweat or get dirty? They look like they have no fear of the terrible world they live in. They enter a high school (the Sadie Hawkins day gag was humorous) and yet they take time to dance? They're taking canned food that's over a decade old, yet it looks like it just came off a shelf? The heart to heart conversation is getting tiresome. oh, and Silas, who earlier punched the crap out of someone in a flashback, cutting his knuckles, PUNCHES THE HELL OUT OF A WALKER and doesn't hurt his hands? He should be cut and infected by now! As for the CRS or CRM, it looks from the post credit scene that they're killing and experimenting on the people they collect. Why? Are they run by some religious organization? Are we expected to believe that Rick Grimes, he of the moral superiority would work for these people? Or that they would leave him free? I thought that parts of Fear were stupid but this show...

Don't forget to watch the FULL episode
rishabhmankale26 October 2020
This episode amps it up big time. There's more scares, but also more melodrama. Great visuals, CGI, masking the average acting. Only thing bogging down is the sudden changes in tone from gloomy to happy and the simulated prom dance. More things will become spoiler , so yeah good episode

It gets worse.
cruise0126 October 2020
1 out of 5 stars.

Well this series can not get any worse. The characters take refuge in a building. Trying to find supplies and fight zombies. Well Felix warns them about safety. The teens joke and mock him. Next thing you know they get stuck in danger and asking for help. Just plain annoying and stupid characters. Iris. Hope. And the two other teenage boys with one having an emotional anger problem. It is difficult to care for anyone. Dumb dialogue. Stupid acting. And cliche.

Im losing my patience
ubilstein25 October 2020
Im not a hater. I really really try to like the show, but you cant say that the show is great, if the only intreresting stuff happens in the last 2min of every episode. We are 4 epsiodes in and NOTHING is happening at all. Some teens talking some nonsense and here and there they encounter a walker. Why should I care about the main cast at all?? Seriously the soldier at the end of episode 3 has me way more interested in him than any main cast member, although he barely has 2min screentime. Even Fear S5 is 1000times more interesting to watch. Also they heavily overuse flashbacks. Fear S4A was flashback city, but World beyond is 10times more lazy with that approach and just randomly slaps flashbacks into the episode in order to desperatly try to give the characters more personality. Like I said I love TWD franchise and want to like it, thats why Im voicing my opinion and want a better product.

Awful
traffordbage25 October 2020
At this point, im only watching for the C.R.M. Every scene with them has been interesting and dark. However, the main story contrasts too heavily.

The dancing scene was what brought this episode down from a 5 to a 3. It was so over-the-top and forced between two characters who in reality barely know eachother. Silus' character cant decide what he wants to be, one minute he's an introvert, the next he's violent and unstoppable, and now hes cuddly and social?

It's getting worse, not better. There are other reasons for my rating.

The wolf literally did nothing but stand in a doorway.

Iris mentions how good the soda is, silus points out (as if he is the viewer) that she had that life at the university, but then she comes back with some stupid response. The dialogue was just terrible. I hope it gets better because i will continue to watch it, but this show would be better to binge than waiting a week to see it decline.

I've never fallen asleep during a Walking Dead episode... are they intentionally trying to kill viewers with boredom?

Another Bad Episode
buddybradley-2266529 October 2020
Lots of whining. Effects right out of neighborhood house of horrors. No thought about what happens to things after 10 years, like unrefrigerated soda cans. A highs school so hidden that no one thought to scavenge there? Except for the dead that crowd the building. Lame, lame lame.

I want to like it but it's horrible
grlym-468496 November 2020
I gave it a 3 because if it's namesake and my hope it will get better fir the sake of the franchise.

However , if this was a new zombie show nit connected to TWD, I would have stopped watching at episode 1.

The show is like the Mickey Mouse club meets zombies. What demographic are the even targeting? There is zero intrigue, suspense or grit that made TWD what it is.

Kid actors rarely pull audiences big enough to matter because it usually feels like a kid show. And the adults on this show that get the most air time seem neutered just like a Nickelodeon movie. Where they are just bumbling idiots to the cleverness of the kids. The kids backstories are lifeless. Directing tries to artful at the sacrifice of interest. The point drags on. And how many of the same exact shots from their backstories do we need to see EVERY episode. We get it already. Move on. The villains and zombies have more intrigue than the main cast

What are they doing????
Rob-O-Cop28 October 2020
Who are they making this snore fest for? Nobody wants to see this. They've called themselves rock n roll and then preceded to play us easy listening standards. 3 of the 6 main characters are awful. The 2 sisters(???), and Huck, what accent is she trying to pull off and her 'rough tough gal' is all over the place). And the guys aren't much better. Gentle giant with a dangerous core, likeable book nerd, and gay tough guy. it's like a cliche colouring in book. None of it is convincing, they're wasting the palette of the walking dead world, and the endlessly talk about boring stuff with no real insight. Written by people who obviously have no depth to their job skills. They've been given a break to write for a well funded tv franchise, but really they need to give us a break and cancel this quickly. It's only getting worse.

Loved this episode. The characters, all Elton and Felix scenes are great! Post credit scene with CRM was also very exciting for me. Can't wait for episode 5!

I'm trying I really am
sanderseben30 October 2020
The teens are super annoying. I mean I get it but damn. They play too much and don't take anything serious. Growing up behind walls will do that huh?! Felix and army lady should have left them behind lol I'm playing but doing the whole let's try and get them to turn back one by one is stupid. Nice little preview after the credits looking forward to that but this show is holding on by a thread

I want my 45 minutes back
alanhawley-722096 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Oh dear, where do I start, I've been a long time viewer of TWD franchises since they began including the woeful spin off series, FTWD. I'm from Australia and had heard of this new series but hadn't been able to watch it when it was first released in the USA.

I had seen the previews and couldn't wait as I had high hopes of what the show was going to be about. I finally subscribed to Amazon Prime Video and decided to check it out.

I found the first episode interesting as the main characters were introduced and their back stories explained to me. At first, the flashbacks were helpful but as I watched each episode, they began to become draining and unnecessary.

I forced myself to watch episode two and three because I was curious to see how the new group of "survivors" fit into the walking dead universe, the dialog is so shallow that I managed to read the previous comments from other IMDb users and still follow along with the episode at the same time. If you're looking for deep and meaningful conversation between the cast, you won't find it here.

Just finished watching this episode four. The show starts out fairly predictably, storm approaching and oh, what's this?, an abandoned school building, convenient. I love all things abandoned and actually found the exterior shot of the school with the storm clouds behind to be pretty cool.

Unnecessary flashback one. Iris sitting in a chair reading a book while everyone else looks for survival stuff, seriously, it's an apocalypse, when any moment could be your last, you need to find stuff to survive. Iris - Now let's all spit up,

Lame comments from Felix. The fact that these characters have to be told to; "keep you eyes open" and "weapons drawn" is a bit of a worry. Why keep your weapons drawn if your not prepared to use them. Oh and finally; "if you see an empty, run", seriously, if these characters were in Rick Grimes universe, he would have disposed of them. Grimes, "How many walkers have you killed?" Uh, none because we were told to scream and run away.

Flashback two, Hope and her father. Lame conversation about stink bombs, why?.

Cut to school auditorium with Iris and Silas, "looks like a party". No, really?!!!. "we should go to the teachers lounge", oh no, the doors stuck but that's ok, we'll stay here while everyone else does all the work. Lame conversation about the batteries in the walkie talkie.

Flashback three, Hope and her father again.

Cut to school hallway with Felix and Elton, more lame comments from Felix about him losing his father and needing Eltons help, Felix, "Elton, stay behind me", and (take photographs of everything that you see). Wouldn't Felix be better giving Elton the opportunity to learn survival skills by letting him take out empties?.

Unnecessary Flashback four, about Elton being claustrophobic.

Cut to the auditorium with lazy Iris sitting down, reading another book and looking off into the distance as everyone else in the school risks their lives looking for supplies.

More Lame comments from Silas, "I guess if we have to, we can make our way past the emptie and go upstairs", really, why don't you just kill it already. What's the point of having a massive wrench with a pointy end if you're not going to use it.

But no, let's just sit here and drink Soda from aluminium cans. No reaction to the taste of the ten yer old Soda and it's apparently still carbonated. More lame conversation about making up for things, stuff, going to more dances. Let's Listen to some music while everyone else looks for supplies.

Meanwhile, Hope and Huck encounter a blood thirsty wolf / wild dog while trying to find supplies.

Cut back to the auditorium with more lame conversation about ball gowns and old time dancing, waltzing. Then, the two most laziest characters in the show, ballroom dancing?, in an apocalypse?, when everyone else is looking for supplies. Why don't they just kill the emptie and help everyone else out.

But wait, it's Felix to the rescue, not Elton, he's useless. More lame whinging comments from Iris and Silas "there's another way out through the basement, but there's an empty down there".

Felix, "ok don't worry, stay here, I'll take care of the emptie". Seriously, these two characters are useless. The correct response from Felix should have been to Silas, well why haven't you killed it yet?!!!. When You're trying to survive in an apocalypse, what do you do?, collect paint brushes talk about ballroom dances and dance of course, why?.

Cut to hallway with Hope and Huck lame conversation about Hopes father trying to protect her from something, the wolf and survival.

Back to Iris and Silas stupidly just sitting around waiting to be saved by Felix. Suddenly they urgently need to get out of the auditorium. Iris, "I'm going to open the door and call the empty like a dog?. Seriously?.

Meanwhile, Silas stands back with his massive wrench up ready to use, but instead of stabbing the empty in the head, Silas just looks sheepishly at Iris as she calls the empty towards her. They both run around the empty and exit the auditorium. In the store room, Iris, "what is it?". Silas, "it looks like a flare". Well duh. Iris to Silas, "we got to get out of here", no, really?.

Flashback five, Silas snaps and stabs empty in the head, punches empty in the head, doesn't receive any injuries or cuts to his hands, really?, so unrealistic.

Deep and meaning full conversation between Iris and Hope. Conversation between Felix and Elton about turning around. Conversation between Silas and Iris about him saving them, I don't think so.

Finally, let's all take a group photograph. The end.

In all seriousness, the episode was a shallow uninspiring drain with the only part of this episode worth watching was the clip at the end of the credits showing the experiments being carried out on the test subjects by the CRM.
