Chicago – Public education is in the fight of its life. As curriculums are determined more through the state, parents and politics, the local authority of a child’s educator is being consistently diminished. This subject is the centerpiece of “The Teacher’s Lounge,” co-written and directed by German/Turkish filmmaker Ilker Çatak.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Carla (Leonie Benesch) is a dedicated, idealistic young teacher in her first job at a German middle school. Her relaxed rapport with her seventh-grade students is put under stress when a series of thefts occur at the school, and a staff investigation leads to accusations and mistrust among outraged parents, opinionated colleagues, and angry students. Caught in the middle of these complex dynamics, Carla tries to mediate … but the more she tries to do everything right, the more desperate her position becomes. The film has a wide release on January 19th, 2024.

I still remember being blown away by the 1973 Westworld with Yul Brenner’s android gunslinger. And when I heard Peron of Interest’s Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy were adapting the concept for HBO, I was keenly interested. With expanded budgets, improved technology, and being episodic, the concepts could be more deeply explored.
The first season, released in 2016, was not at all disappointing, with its rich cast, superb acting, and fine scripts. We got invested in the humans and androids, dubbed Hosts, alike, curious to see if these machines would truly gain sentience and then what…?
Now we’re at the end of the road, which proved far more meandering and disappointing. What it means to be human, as seen through the awakening eyes of the Hosts meant we were rooting for Dolores Abernathy (Evan Rachel Wood) and Maeve Millay (Thandiwe Newton), among others. The second season saw Delores leading a revolt,...

After 64 episodes of television, a feature film and a statue dedication, Aaron Paul has closed the book on Jesse Pinkman.
The Breaking Bad and El Camino star has decided that his two recent appearances on Better Call Saul are the perfect way to bid adieu to the character he’s played since Bad’s pilot shoot in 2007. Paul’s decision makes even more sense on the heels of Albuquerque’s unveiling of two bronze statues that commemorate Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, two fictional characters who turned New Mexico’s largest city into a tourist destination for fans around the world.
“[Jesse Pinkman] will always have a special place inside of me, but I can confidently say that [Better Call Saul] was the last time we’re going to see Pinkman. So it was a nice farewell,” Paul tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Westworld Season 4 Episode 8
William (Ed Harris) was always obsessed with the creations of Robert Ford. He wasn’t exactly into the narrative, but he was in search of something else. Something deeper, something more meaningful, called to him. William knew it as the maze, and all he wanted was to find his way to the center of it any way he could. Usually, especially as he aged into the Man In Black, that meant violence. He understands violence, and he’s at home when there’s shooting, screaming, and bleeding. The guy in a black Stetson stalking through the streets of Manhattan gunning down everyone in his math might not be the same as the human, flesh-and-blood William, but as he says later in the episode, he’s just William’s impulses in an evolved body. Meat does not make a person, unless it’s...

Catwoman has another trick up her sleeve. Zoë Kravitz showed up to the 2022 Oscars red carpet on Sunday, March 27, in an effortlessly beautiful look that reminded fans of Audrey Hepburn—not unlike her character Bonnie during that costume party in Big Little Lies. The 33-year-old actress wore a baby pink Yves Saint Laurent dress with a knotted neckline to create a bow effect. Zoë paired the sweet gown with a Kwiat diamond necklace and pulled back hairdo with wispy bangs, leaning into a more classic style compared to the edgy Catwoman outfits she's been wearing to recent red carpet events. Exclusive: In a pre-emptive situation, MGM has secured a deal for the feature film project Jim Jones, with Leonardo DiCaprio in final talks to star as the 1970s religious cult leader who was behind the Jonestown mass suicide on November 18, 1978 that took more than 900 lives. The Oscar winner will produce for his Appian Way company alongside Jennifer Davisson.
MGM scooped up the Scott Rosenberg-penned script in what we hear was a seven-figure deal. The Venom scribe will also executive produce Jim Jones.
Jones founded the Peoples Temple in Indianapolis in 1955, and hailed it as a fully integrated congregation promoting Christian Socialism. By the 1970s he openly rejected traditional Christianity and claimed that he was God. He constructed Jonestown in Guyana in 1974 and spurred a following to live with him there as he touted a socialist paradise free from U.S. government oppression.

Breakups suck - a sentiment that I found myself face to face with upon hearing the news about Hulu's decision to cancel High Fidelity. I'll admit, when I first heard that Hulu had decided to revive the intellectual property for a series, I wasn't completely thrilled. Unpopular opinion: I wasn't head over heels for the John Cusack film, and I never read Nick Hornby's book. Once I saw Zoë Kravitz and Da'Vine Joy Randolph were part of the lineup, dread quickly turned into anticipation.
Hulu's reimagining of High Fidelity follows Rob (Kravitz), a record-store owner still reeling after a traumatic breakup with her ex-fiancé. Wondering if there's something wrong with her, she hunts down her exes in search of answers. Each episode is accompanied by a killer soundtrack to guide us through the narrative while providing insight into its characters. But this Rob isn't...

Zoë Kravitz hit all the right notes on Instagram. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Hulu's High Fidelity television show wouldn't return for a second season. Zoë, who played the lead role and told the story through a female perspective, said goodbye to the series in an Instagram post on Wednesday, August 5. However, the 31-year-old star didn't hold back when Tessa Thompson commented on her farewell message. If anything, the High Fidelity lead called out Hulu for its lack of diversity. Rob's search for love is over.
Hulu has canceled High Fidelity after one season, it has been announced.
Deadline first reported the news, noting that Hulu deliberated on the decision for a while, even extending the cast options for a month.
The series was originally set to launch on Disney+, but was shifted to Hulu ahead of the launch, thanks in part to it appealing to a more adult audience than the network wanted.
While the series is canceled, Deadline notes that a potential revival on another network is a long shot.
It's rare for streaming shows to be saved after cancellation. In fact, it's rare for any show to get saved, but there are more hurdles when it comes to rescuing a streaming series.
Zoë Kravitz starred as Rob, a Brooklyn record store owner who was a little too obsessed with her failed romantic relationships, but her love for music helped her cope.

When the Sci Fi Fidelity podcast began in the fall of 2016, Den of Geek was just over half its current age and podcasts were experiencing a surge in popularity. As a result, we dove into our analysis of science fiction and supernatural television shows with enough fervor to ignite listener interest in the unsung heroes of the genre TV field through thoughtful reviews, insightful interviews, and discussions of our favorite aspects of this corner of the entertainment world. Alas, however, the journey has come to an end just shy of the podcast’s fourth anniversary as we move the discussion to our video outlets, but we wanted to take some time to look back at the best moments from our hundred-episode run.
We immediately found ourselves recalling some of our more memorable interviews, and Dave was compelled to highlight his chat with Christian Kane of The Librarians, the first such...

Tales from the Loop is an unusual sort of sci-fi anthology show in that each separate story is united by a common pastoral setting and a dominant central family. This is no doubt in part because the series takes its inspiration from a series of unrelated but commonly themed paintings by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, which combine scenes of everyday life with a normalized science fiction sensibility. When we spoke to showrunner Nathaniel Halpern and actor Paul Schneider, they both emphasized this subtle style of storytelling as the hallmark of the show.
When we spoke to Halpern, it was well before Tales from the Loop dropped on Amazon on April 3, 2020, so we were still getting a sense for what the show was about and how the paintings inspired him. “At the inception of this it really was: how do you keep that sense of wonder alive in the series in...

In these days of coronavirus quarantine, one day can feel exactly like the next, and it reminded our Sci Fi Fidelity podcast hosts of the many repeating days that appear in time loop episodes of some current and classic TV shows. Bill Murray in Groundhog Day may have set the standard in cinema, but imitators on the small screen have taken the idea to new creative levels even as they emulate certain familiar aspects that have become the norm for episodes of this type.
For example, usually only one or two characters notice that a specific period of time is repeating, and they typically have a very difficult time convincing those around them that this has all happened before if they even try. Assuming there is a scientific or magical cause for the loop, there usually is a singular solution that the aware characters must find to break out of the cycle.

Cosmos has been around since 1980, and the optimistic tone of both the late Carl Sagan’s show and the current iteration hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson has been the hallmark of the series. In its effort to make science more accessible and more inspirational to the average viewer, Cosmos: Possible Worlds has taken us on powerful visual journeys through space and time, and much of the credit for the impact of the show’s message must go to writer and executive producer Ann Druyan and the always relatable host Neil deGrasse Tyson, who joined the Sci Fi Fidelity podcast before the March 9th premiere on Nat Geo.
Druyan spoke to us on release day for her new book based on the latest season of the series, also titled Cosmos: Possible Worlds, which serves as a sequel to the popular novel tie-in with the original series written by her late husband,...

There was much anticipation among the Sci Fi Fidelity audience and the podcast hosts for the arrival of Locke & Key on Netflix, and although the adaptation was not without its flaws, everyone enjoyed the magical, gothic feel of the spooky Key House and the similarly creepy powers the keys bestowed upon the Locke family. The young protagonists were immediately charming, and the complexity of their evolution throughout the series made for an enjoyable narrative even without the fantastical elements.
As always, we discuss the first two episodes at the start of the podcast, covering both the premise and our thoughts on the main characters we’re introduced to. We also acknowledge the graphic novel origins of Locke & Key and how Joe Hill’s story differs between page and screen. There’s a certain amount of appreciation for the casting of the Locke family, including the apparently ageless Connor Jessup of...

I cringed when I heard that High Fidelity would be the latest old Hollywood IP to be rebooted, as I am a self-identified High Fidelity stan. The 2000 movie starring John Cusack has always been my heartbreak comedy-drama North Star, and like any protective fan, I didn't want it sullied by a carbon-copy pretender. I'm delighted to admit that I was wrong - the gender-flipped reboot starring Zoë Kravitz in Cusack's role has been translated into a cool, refreshing take on modern love.
However, there's one big issue: High Fidelity (2020) is too loyal to High Fidelity (2000). It was expected that the Hulu show would borrow largely from the film, and it does, although to use the word borrow would be a vast understatement. Kravitz's character is named Rob. Rob runs a record store called Championship Vinyl. She has two employees and a crippling introspection regarding her love life. Those things felt like a given,...

Our genre television podcast hosts choose their favorite examples of television vampires who won our hearts without the use of glamour.
Although vampires have been using powers of seduction to wile their way into their victims’ hearts for more than a century in literature, it’s only been a few decades since the creatures of the night became the beautiful, brooding immortals in television and film that fought against their bloodthirsty urges to seek human companionship. Despite the occasional moral misstep, many of these monsters became the misunderstood heroes of our favorite shows, and this week’s Sci Fi Fidelity podcast seeks to identify the most likable of the lot.
The discussion begins with perhaps the most obvious choice for lovers of vampires: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But who among the many examples in the show is the most charismatic? On the one hand there...

‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Trailer: Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington’s Slow Burn in the Suburbs
The roof — and also, the entire house — is on fire.
Hulu released the official full-length trailer for its upcoming eight-episode limited series, “Little Fires Everywhere.” And as said trailer suggests, you oughta know that the little fires aren’t just the ones that set a family’s home ablaze: Sometimes they’re also the friends we made along the way. Based on Celeste Ng’s 2017 bestseller of the same name, “Little Fires Everywhere” stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington as the respective matriarchs of the picture-perfect Richardson and enigmatic Warren families.
The trailer opens with the image of the Richardson’s Shaker Heights family home destroyed by the literal fire, with Elena (Witherspoon) voiceovering about how she “always had the best intentions” and being asked if she knows anyone who would do this. What follows is a look back at the events leading up to the fire, with Elena renting...

Rob’s run-in with ex-boyfriend Mac was all sorts of messy in High Fidelity‘s penultimate episode. Will the two exes rekindle their former love, or will Rob’s too-cool-for-school vibe sabotage her once again? Let’s find out.
In a finale flashback, we watch Mac and Rob eavesdrop on a fighting couple who are on the other side of a huge rock in a park. Over copious smooches, they promise that if they ever turn into that war-torn couple, they’ll remind each other what their side of the rock felt like. Back in the present, Rob’s brother...

The Altered Carbon season 2 showrunner role has “re-sleeved” in Alison Schapker, and she spoke on the podcast about the story to come.
This interview is spoiler-free for Altered Carbon season 2.
For those wondering if Altered Carbon season 2 will have the same flavor as the dark and violent cyberpunk adaptation that was season one, the answer is yes and no. The new showrunner for the series, Alison Schapker, previewed the season on the Sci Fi Fidelity podcast, talking about how the story will not only build on the same consciousness transferring foundation of the first run; it will also bring a new kind of energy both in Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Takeshi Kovacs, played last season by Joel Kinnaman, and in the more hopeful quest to find his long lost love, Quellcrist Falconer.

Nick Hornby's 1995 novel High Fidelity has had quite the post-publication life.
In 2000, it was adapted into a Disney film when Joe Roth headed the studio. It starred John Cusack and brought him a Golden Globe nomination. In 2006, the book was then turned into a Broadway show that The New York Times called one of the "all-time most forgettable musicals." (It closed after 10 days.) And, on Feb. 14, the High Fidelity TV series launches on Hulu starring Zoë Kravitz. (In a showbiz confluence, her mother, Lisa Bonet, co-starred in the film.)

Hulu’s High Fidelity, released on Valentine’s Day, deftly walks the line between remake and reinvention. The terrific new series features a lot of material specific to its characters, like the uniquely self-destructive quality of its Rob (Zoë Kravitz), or the running gag about how she’s never seen The Sopranos. But along the way, it also frequently pays homage to the classic Nick Hornby book, and the equally classic 2000 film starring John Cusack as Rob.
Here are some of the series’ most interesting remixes of familiar moments from the book and/or movie.

The TV world is on the verge of Peak Fourth-Wall Break. As with any trend in storytelling devices, there are effective uses and there are gimmicky uses and there are uses that feel like a last-minute add-on. But what really makes the moments work where a character drops all pretense and looks right down the barrel of a camera depends on who’s doing it.
“High Fidelity” has Zoë Kravitz, and it’s one main reason why the new Hulu series, the latest adaptation of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel, does more to earn that protagonist/audience connection than merely following in the footsteps of the 2000 Stephen Frears film. Kravitz takes the mantle of lovelorn record store owner dutifully reliving past romantic failures and anchors a new spin on a familiar story. Rather than have this part of the show feel staid and obligatory, her natural asides keep this 10-episode season a smooth,...

Lenny Kravitz nailed it. As fans well know by now, the musician's only child, famed actress Zoë Kravitz, tied the knot with now-husband Karl Glusman at the musician's home in Paris back in June. Now, the High Fidelity actress has revealed new details about the star-studded event, particularly her father's tear-inducing remarks. "It was funy because I planned this wedding very well and the one thing I didn't really think about was speeches just because, I don't know, it totally slipped my mind," she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Wednesday. "The night before, I was like, I guess I should probably ask you guys to say...

You have to play the long game, if you want to survive as a writer. The publication of High Fidelity, in 1995, was just the first step in an ambitious 25-year plan: a successful American edition, even though I set the book in London (check); a much-loved Hollywood movie (check); and then a gender-flipped TV series starring a woman who was six years old when the book was published, but whose talent and star power were obvious even then (check). It is very satisfying when these things pay off.

At the risk of sounding like High Fidelity‘s main character: The perfect cover version of a song is tricky to pull off, right? It has to maintain the spirit of the original, while also putting a fresh spin on it that makes you hear it in a new way. Hulu’s new take on High Fidelity — premiering this Friday, Feb. 14; I’ve seen five of the ten episodes — is a cover of sorts, too, and it does a pretty solid job of taking what was great about the original book and movie and adding a modern, hipster-y vibe to it.

Principal photography on Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” kicked off this month in England, with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, his most enduring love interest, with whom he’s had a complex love-hate relationship.

Taking a page out of Netflix’s playbook, National Geographic will premiere “Genius: Aretha” just before the Emmy qualifying deadline. “Genius” Season 3, starring Cynthia Erivo as the legendary musician, has set a Memorial Day 2020 release date, debuting four episodes on consecutive nights starting Monday, May 25.
Those four episodes are key. Emmy rules require at least half of the season’s episodes to air on or before May 31, and “Genius: Aretha” runs eight episodes. That means the new season will get in just under the wire by hitting its midway mark on May 29. National Geographic Global Television Networks President Courteney Monroe made the announcement from the TCA stage in Pasadena and said the series just started production, so the team shooting in Atlanta will be pushing to finish final cuts in the next few months.

The saga of Vikings made popular on the History Channel will continue in Valhalla, a Netflix offshoot from the original creator.
It should be no surprise given the popularity of History's flagship scripted series Vikings, here on this site and elsewhere, that series creator Michael Hirst has decided to continue the epic tale of the conquerors of the West in an offshoot entitled Vikings: Valhalla, according to news from TVLine. However, this sequel of sorts will be taking place on Netflix rather than the History Channel where Vikings is set to air the first half of its sixth and final season on December 4th.
Valhalla will follow the exploits of one of the most well-known names in Viking lore: Leif Erikson. Taking place a century after the storyline of its predecessor, the spinoff also features historical figures such as Freydis, Harald Harada, and William the Conqueror.
