It’s an exciting time for Disney+ subscribers. That’s because Disney’s agreement to stream new episodes of Doctor Who is about to start bearing fruit.
On May 10, Disney+ subscribers in the U.S. will be able to access to the two newest episodes of Who season 14: “Space Babies” and “Devil’s Chord.” Additionally, the 2023 Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road” will be available to stream then as well.
For more traditional Disney-heads, May 2024 sees one Star Wars season premiere (Tales of the Empire on May 4), one Star Wars season finale (The Bad Batch on May 1), and one Marvel finale (X-Men ’97 on May 15). May 22 also sees the premiere of Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of X-Men ’97, which should be a fascinating look at the recent animated hit.

What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

Originally developed as an eight-episode series, the maritime adventure “Lucy Lost” will instead hit the silver screen now that Paris-based powerhouse Xilam Animation has retooled the project as a feature. “Klaus” alum Olivier Clert has boarded as co-writer and director, joining BAFTA-winning screenwriter Helen Blakeman for a seaside family tale adapted from “War Horse” author Michael Morpurgo’s 2014 novel “Listen to the Moon.”
Xilam has shared this first-look with Variety ahead of the reformatted project’s pitch at Cartoon Movie in Bordeaux.
Set on the Isles of Scilly just off the Cornish coast, the film follows a young girl named Lucy raised by a clan of fishermen she knows not to be hers. However, she remembers little else about her past, and as a terrible war rages off in the distance, a chance encounter with the mysterious girl her own age soon helps Lucy put back the pieces of her...

As summer creeps closer, Disney+ is both honoring its sturdy franchises and trying something new.
The streamers list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by none other than The Muppets! The Muppets Mayhem premieres May 10 and will, of course, follow beloved musical act Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. The plot reads “Junior A&r executive Nora must deal with the madness caused by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, who come face-to-face with the modern musical business as they try to record their first-ever platinum album.” But really all we needed to hear is that there will be Muppets singing.
Also arriving in May 2023 will be two new Star Wars titles, and wouldn’t you know it they’re both premiering on May 4 a.k.a. Star Wars Day. The lush animated collection Star Wars: Visions will be returning for its second volume while Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures...

Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.

As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.
While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser,...

Chip and Dale have definitely changed over the years, but it almost feels as though they’ve regressed at this point since at one point in the past they never spoke, then came the Rescue Rangers, then came the appearance on the Micky Mouse Clubhouse. It’s a bold, new post-Loki world for Disney+. To deal with it, Disney+ is going right back to the Marvel well for its list of August 2021 new releases.
Marvel’s What If…? premieres August 11 on Disney+. This is an animated series that will feature speculative stories within the MCU like “What if Peggy Carter became Captain America?”, “What if the Ravagers took T’Challa to space?”, and “What if…zombies?!?!?!” While What…If? always seemed like a fun thought exercise, the series has really taken on a vital multiversal context in light of Loki‘s conclusion.
In non-Marvel news, Disney+ will be filling out its library offerings this month. Mrs. Doubtfire arrives on August 6 and will be followed by Eragon on August 20. After its brief premier access release, Cruella will make itself a permanent, free home on Disney on August 27.
There aren’t many other original Disney+ series to speak of in August.

There have already been some theatrical release of note this summer, but as everyone knows the blockbuster movie season doesn’t get started until a Marvel movie premieres. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for July 2021, Disney+ is offering up some options for those who prefer to stay home.
In addition to arriving in theaters on July 9, Black Widow will premiere on Disney+ as well. Disney+ subscribers can purchase the first Marvel movie released since 2019 for $29.99. Judging by the early buzz, that “Premier Access” price may be worth it. Disney+ is keeping the original summer movie parade going in July with The Rock’s latest action film, Jungle Cruise, premiering on July 30.

Disney+ is shaking up its release strategy for its original series.
The popular streaming service has announced episodes will unspool on Wednesdays instead of Fridays.
That's right:
Wednesday is the new Friday at Disney+!
The news comes a week after the series premiere of Loki broke records, becoming the most-watched Disney+ premiere to date.
This means it beat out The Mandalorian, WandaVision, and even Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
As a result, a string of original series with already planned premieres have found their dates changed.
Below is the full list.
- Monsters at Work from July 2, 2021 to July 7, 2021
- Turner & Hooch from July 16, 2021 to July 21, 2021

Loki, the Tom Hiddleston-fronted Marvel television series, premiered on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 9.
This was a bit of a surprise given that it originally was dated for a Friday and other series such as WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had launched just ahead of the weekend.
But the move paid off as Disney+ said that Loki, which was created by Michael Waldron and directed by Kate Herron, became its most-watched series premiere.
Going forward, the streamer will drop all of its originals on Wednesdays. This will include all original scripted, unscripted and animated series.
Disney+ Original Movies will continue to premiere on Fridays.
Here are the new premiere dates for several series:
Monsters at Work moves from July 2 to July 7
Turner & Hooch moves from July 16 to July 21
Behind the Attraction moves from July 16 to July 21
Chip ‘n’ Dale: Park Life moves from July 23 to July 28

Disney+ is permanently switching up the release schedule for its original series from Fridays to Wednesday. The decision comes after Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” which debuted last Wednesday, became the most-watched original series in the streaming service’s short history.
The new release schedule will apply globally and begin with the service’s July original series, which include Pixar’s “Monsters at Work” and the reboot of “Turner and Hooch.” “Monsters at Work” will now premiere on July 7, while “Turner and Hooch” will debut two weeks later on July 21.
Before “Loki,” Disney+ premiered all of its original series on Fridays. Unlike other streaming services, particularly Netflix, Disney+ has stuck to a weekly rollout model. The Wednesday rollout will only be for original series. Original movies like Pixar’s “Luca” will continue to debut on Fridays.
