Hitchcockian Fenton

Regardless of what people's opinions are on Fenton/Gizmoduck (and am aware that there are non-fans of the character, from personal experience he grew on me), who cannot help love a title like "The Duck Who Knew Too Much"? Some may find it corny, but to me it is a clever one and indicative of an episode that would spoof mysteries, one of my favourite genres, and Hitchcock, my personal favourite director. The premise also sounded great.

"The Duck Who Knew Too Much" to me is a good episode that fares better through adult eyes, due to understanding the writing a lot more. It doesn't quite live to full potential, the heavily flawed transitioning being a big hindrance, but those that love Fenton or have felt better about him over-time should find this a delight. With it being one of not enough episodes to have him as a properly interesting character worthy of being more than a supporting role.

Will start off with the many good things first. Much of the animation is bright and colourful, especially in the climax. Even when 'Ducktales' was off form, which it was a few times, the music always shone and never was a problem. The scoring is beautifully orchestrated and dynamic with the action and the theme song is hard to forget, one of Disney's and animation's best. "The Duck Who Knew Too Much" contains some very smart and amusing writing, that for Fenton's is easily some of his best. Just love its wit and edge in a way ot really seen in his previous appearances.

Furthermore, the story mostly is entertaning and intriguing, with also the right amount of suspense. Especially in a dynamite final third, that has all the suspense, intrigue and fun that one expects reading the premise. "The Duck Who Knew Too Much" is probably Fenton's most interesting episode in terms of characterisation, one of not many times where the character was not only nailed but also came into his own. Gandra is suitably fetching and the chemistry between her and Fenton is nice. The voice acting is mostly good, top honours going to Hamilton Camp.

Sadly, there are drawbacks. The episode did feel rushed at times. Namely in the transitions, too many of them are very clumsy in a way that is distracting. Things pop out of nowhere and either are under-developed or don't make sense, too much so in the first act especially.

Goldfeather is an annoying character and the accent is as awful as one can possibly get. When it comes to the award for "worst ever accent in a 'Ducktales' episode", this would be a quite easy win.

Overall, pretty good and one of the most interesting Fenton-centric episodes but could have been great. 7/10
