Watching 'Jupiter's Legacy' feels like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle with several pieces missing. That they're showing us things without explaining why, or giving us any context.
The teleportation into a strip club is one example. Why? Does it have something to do with George? Or Hutch? Maybe it's a joke on George' part, but what's the joke? Like Walt says earlier, what's the punchline?
Or Barnabas showing up? Is Barnabas one of Sheldon's crew in 1929? Is he a come-later metahuman? How do younger metahumans get created? Why is he so familiar with Grace and Sheldon? We haven't seen him in the 1929 flashbacks, have we? He's an interesting character, but that's because of the performance of the actor. Who his character is in the story, I have no idea.
Or the framing device of Sheldon talking to Hobbs. Yes, we know that something hinky is going on, and the big reveal at the end isn't that surprising. Why does Sheldon go to who is presumably his arch-nemesis to reveal his origins and inner turmoil? That seems like a dumb idea giving a bad guy a look into your psyche despite how securely they're locked up. Plus maybe it's me, but Hobbs doesn't seem like a threat to Utopian. Granted, neither does Lex Luthor to Superman, but Lex isn't usually in prison.
That's part of the problem with the 1929 flashbacks. They're not adding anything to the story so far, and it seems like the production team is spending time and money on them when they could be using that to tell stories in the present day that would explain some of these questions. I'd like to know how Barnabas got his powers, or what the significance of the strip bars is, or why Sheldon trusts Hobbs so much. Maybe this will be explained down the road, but it's an eight-episode series and we're already in episode five. And we know the show hasn't been renewed.
Instead we get collapsed storytelling in the present day. Like Hutch and Chloe. One scene he's trying to get the drugs back, and then they're having sex in their next scene. What? How did that happen?
Overall, not much happens. And maybe that's the intention. But it's frustrating.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
