A fun, if not a bit predictable, episode
caseyjohnson-5125327 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Starting from the top, I wasn't sure of where this episode was going, but I was looking forward to the day we'd meet Willow, Gus, and Amity, the three magic students who were seen in the intro, and this episode does a good job at introducing the three, as well as their characteristics:

Willow is kind-hearted but very shy. Just don't set her off or else she'll attack you with her thorny wrath. Gus is very energetic and studies humans. and Amity is the resident top student and mean girl. I really do hope that there's a change of heart since I know I have seen Luz and Amity interact in later episodes, and I really do like Mae Whitman.

Anyway, the episode; the plot was kinda predictable, but what surprised me was the sincerity of the ending; Willow sacrifices her and Gus's time for Luz's life. If Luz hadn't escaped, then she would've been dissected.

Again, Furthering the Story.

This episode introduces a familiar idea of a magic school, which noted has been done! But this show puts a unique, charming, and clever twist on it. Also Willow was a highlight of the episode.

A very solid episode

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this episode, to be honest, and while I do agree that the episodes have been less serialized than what people have been expecting, it's not a big issue. Filler is fine so long as there's a nice balance and it doesn't overtake the show.

This episode follows Luz as she helps Willow with her abomination project at her school by literally being the abomination. Cliched? Yes. Overdone? Probably. Interesting to see? Yes, especially since by this point we haven't seen the school beyond a couple of teaser clips. In all honesty, while I do see that others may dislike this episode, I enjoyed it; it was a lot of fun, and kinda subtly teaches a couple of good lessons about resourcefulness in stressful situations, as well as a need to ask for help (as is expressed in the B plot).

I would love to see more of Willow and Gus, and while I know some people would like to see a redemption arc for Amity (or *shudder* Amiluz shipping), I think we're still a ways away from that happening.

Branching out into more interesting territory

The jokes in this episode are more consistently funny, and the episode once again has very effective character introductions. Both the main and B-plots of the episode are more engaging than the previous one. It's weird to watch this episode knowing how some of the characters develop, but that just goes to show how well the show handled them throughout their time on-screen.

Welcome Amity, Willow and Gus!

This episode was good and a lot of fun. It further expands the world of the Boiling Islands by introducing us to new characters as well as giving us a glimpse of how magic works on the Islands.

This episode is good

This is great for introductions, but I really hate episodes of TV shows where there is a character that is trying to "hide in a place they're not supposed to be". Willow and Gus are likeable characters, not with much depth, but they're fun. Overall, the show is decent, not as good as Gravity Falls' first three episodes, but I don't want to compare them much, because they have very different elements.
