The Oldenburg Film Festival has picked two iconoclast filmmakers to honor for its 30th anniversary edition: French actor/director Isild Le Besco and Canadian producer Jen Gatien. Both women have carved out unique paths in independent cinema, defying conventions and expectations.
Le Besco has worked in front of the camera since she was eight, and by her early 20s was already a face of French auteur cinema, with two César nominations — for her performances in Benoît Jacquot’s Sade (2000) and Cédric Kahn’s Roberto Succo (2001) and a best actress honor in Venice for Jacquot’s L’Intouchable (2006).
Her directorial debut, 2004’s Demi-Tarif (Half-Price), the story of three young siblings, Romeo (Kolia Litscher), Launa (Lila Salet), and the youngest, Leo (Cindy David), left on their own in a rundown Paris apartment, was an unmediated look into the world of childhood and drew praise from the likes of Mia Hansen-Løve, whose review,...

Despite being a first time feature filmmaker, if Sophie Goodhart were to get into Sundance…it wouldn’t be her first visit. She started off in the biz when her 2003 short was accepted into Cannes Palme d’Or short comp, but Goodhart was 1/3rd of the scribes involved in the Sundance Film Fest’s Next section selected Homewrecker from directors Todd and Brad Barnes. Shot in Cleveland this past May, she took the basis and the title of her short film and lined up a feature version of it with an attention grabbing cast: Adam Scott, Jenny Slate and Nick Kroll. My Blind Brother is the sort of material that might actually fall into the U.S. Dramatic Comp which recently proved that you don’t need to be a strict drama to be included in that category, but a Premieres directorial debut could also be in the cards.

To salute the incoming arrival of American Ultra, we salute some underrated treats from Jesse Eisenberg's back catalogue...
When Jesse Eisenberg was announced as Lex Luthor in Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice, it made instant sense. Not because he was bald, not because he looks like or Gene Hackman or anything, but just because he’s one of those actors whose screen presence is so perfectly formed. You know exactly what they’re going for with their Luthor, just by Eisenberg’s name. It’s Mark Zuckerberg vs Superman, the supergod vs the awkward genius.
But that’s not the only big action movie he’s got coming up. First he’s going to be in American Ultra, a unique stoner/sci-fi mash-up where he stars alongside Kristen Stewart (it's released in the UK on September 4th). Eisenberg first really burst into our consciousness in 2009 and 2010, where...

For those in the know, being in the running for a Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival is statistically…near impossible, especially for the dozen or less films selected in the short film competition. Now comes word that, an American selected 2013 short will have a growth spurt of sorts, with Deadline reporting that Sophie Goodhart‘s comedy, the feature version of My Blind Brother has nabbed the cast of Adam Scott, Jenny Slate, Nick Kroll and Charlie Hewson. Low Spark Films’ Tyler Davidson will produce with Tory Tunnell (Holy Rollers). Low Sparks’ Kevin Flanigan and Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold are exec producers with Joseph E. LoConti. Production will begin this May in Ohio.
Gist: Scott will play a handsome man who gets all the women and is the perfect athlete–even though he’s blind. Kroll plays his less handsome brother, whose role in life is to serve as his brother’s eyes.

Tons of documentaries are streaming online, educating and enraging us from the comfort of our homes. When we watch films that point out injustices or present cool new perspectives, we’re momentarily moved to change our lifestyles. But sadly, we don’t really have what it takes to follow through.
Though we wanted to ditch processed food after watching Food Inc., we couldn’t tear ourselves away from the snacks we’ve come to love. A doc about Wal-Mart’s business practices will made us promise never to set foot in the store again, but when we needed items cheap and fast, we found ourselves being greeted by smiley faces. And after watching Holy Rollers, we discovered that a group of devout Christians had more motivation than we did to learn card counting and pay bills with blackjack winnings.
Check out the documentaries in our list, all of which are streaming on Netflix.

Unfortunately, this will cost more than a couple of quarters to see. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy classic arcade game Space Invaders as much as the next person, but it seems as if Hollywood is running out of ideas. Read on below to see who's signed on to produce the upcoming film project, as well as some other films they've produced! According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. Do you have hope for the film? Whatever your answers are, leave them in the comments below, and to check out the original article,...

Akiva Goldsman wrote, directed and produced Winter's Tale for Warner Bros this year and I haven't seen it, but it has been described to me as laughably bad. Something about Colin Farrell pulling off someone's face? I imagine I'll get to it.
On the other side of this story coin is a game called Space Invaders. I'm not sure how ever-present it is in the current generation, but it's that 1980s video game where you're shooting slowly advancing aliens from behind some destructible obstacles. It's kind of like a stationary Galaga.
The Wrap reports that Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold (Edge of Tomorrow) and Tory Tunnell (Holy Rollers) have come on to produce a movie adaptation of Space Invaders.
So...that's happening.
I bet Taylor Kitsch could star in it. ...

A new clip from indie drama Affluenza features Transformers: Age of Extinction star Nicola Peltz as a New York socialite.
Affluenza stars Ben Rosenfield as a young photographer who finds himself wrapped up in the Long Island social scene when he moves in with his sultry socialite cousin (Peltz) during the financial crisis of 2008.
The Flash's Grant Gustin has a supporting role as an arrogant jock who doesn't take kindly to his girlfriend's wandering eye.
Director Kevin Asch developed the story for Affluenza and worked on the screenplay with Antonio Macia (Anne B Real).
The pair previously collaborated on the Jesse Eisenberg-starring religious drama Holy Rollers in 2010.
Affluenza opens today (July 11) in the Us. No UK release date has been set.

A Long Way Down
R, 1 Hr., 36 Mins.
A bright cast spackles this uneven Nick Hornby adaptation about a quartet of suicidal strangers (Pierce Brosnan, Toni Collette, Aaron Paul, and Imogen Poots) who meet on a London rooftop one New Year’s Eve and quickly become a fractured family. With an ace troupe like that, there are affecting moments, to be sure. But the movie criminally wastes Sam Neill and Rosamund Pike in barely there supporting roles, and the picture has exactly two tones: grim and gooey. They do not coexist harmoniously. Many who hear about Affluenza may at first assume that the movie is a look inside the thoroughly depressing case of Ethan Couch, a Texas teen who drove drunk and caused a crash, killing four and injuring two. During his trial, a psychologist argued Couch was a victim of “affluenza,” as the product of rich parents who never set boundaries for him or taught him to understand the relationship between actions and consequences. The case made national headlines when the judge sentenced him to ten years of probation and therapy in a cushy rehab facility – a sentence that defied basic ideas of both logic and justice with its leniency.
Unfortunately, Affluenza does not explore that inflammatory case – however, its teenage subjects are certainly comparable to Couch. Set in pre-recession 2008 on privileged Long Island, the film follows an aspiring photographer named Fisher (Ben Rosenfield) who comes to stay with his upper-class relatives after his parents divorce.

Affluenza, directed by Kevin Asch (Holy Rollers), is going to be sold largely as a film starring Nicola Peltz (Transformers: Age of Extinction, "Bates Motel"), but what had me doing a double take is the fact it stars Steve Guttenberg, whom I didn't even know was still acting, but one look at his IMDb profile shows he never quit, he's simply not in any movies people actually watch. Now before watching this trailer I thought this movie might be about that Texas teen that got drunk, drove and killed four people and ultimately got off because he suffered from "affluenza" -- "the product of wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for the boy." Maybe that had something to do with the movie, which seems to focus on how great it is to be rich until it's not great to be rich, or maybe they're just using the buzz word to create a buzzy title,...

It’s the summer of 2008, and everything is grand for the beautiful, entitled Long Island teens of Affluenza. That is, ’til the financial crisis hits.
Loosely based on The Great Gatsby, Affluenza finds a middle class kid (Boardwalk Empire’s Ben Rosenfield) thrust into the upper crust party scene of Great Neck, Long Island with his privileged cousin Kate (Bates Motel’s Nicola Peltz) and her cabal of volatile admirers and friends (including The Flash’s Grant Gustin and Faking It’s Gregg Sulkin).

Acclaimed at the 2014 Slamdance Festival, documentary "Little Hope was Arson" will air on PBS's weekly series Independent Lens and receive a theatrical treatment from film and music distributor The Orchard in the U.S. and Canada. This makes "Little Hope was Arson" the only Slamdance film to get picked up (at least so far). From first-time director Theo Love, producer Trenton Waterson and executive producer Bryan Storkel, who made waves with his film "Holy Rollers" in 2010, "Little Hope was Arson" documents the aftermath of the burning of ten churches in East Texas. The ensuing investigation is one of the most thorough and unorthodox the region has ever seen. The Orchard director of acquisitions Danielle Digiamoco said the film "transcends the boundaries of 'true crime documentary' to tell a layered story of faith, family, and forgiveness against the backdrop of the Bible Belt." Independent Lens will air the documentary during its 2014-2015 season.

• Hopefully Rooney Mara (Side Effects) and Martin Sheen (The Departed) will get a chance to trade Terrence Malick stories when they begin filming Trash in Rio De Janeiro next month. The two actors have signed on to star in the adaptation of Andy Mulligan’s 2010 young adult novel about three homeless boys living in an intentionally ambiguous “third world” country in the near future who discover something in a trash heap worth protecting. Mara will play an Ngo worker and Sheen is set for the part of Father Julliard. Rickson Teves, Eduardo Luis, and Gabriel Weinstein will make their film debuts as the three boys.

The R-rated Kiss of the Damned marks Xan Cassavetes’ feature debut behind the camera, continuing the family tradition as the sister of the brilliant Nick Cassavetes.
The film debuted at Venice last year, and the early reviews suggest that the film brings a new (or, in some ways, old) take to the vampire genre, with nods to the horrors of past decades, and bringing in an explicit sexiness to the fare.
Magnet will be putting the film out through VOD next month, before a theatrical Us release date in May. And now Yahoo Movies have debuted the first red-band trailer to give us a taste of what to expect.

Watching The Simpsons used to be the best part of my Sunday nights when I was growing up. Lately, though, this ritual has been more about nostalgia than true delight.
For quite a few years, the show has been cashing in on its long history and the goodwill it built with its viewers during the 90s. But I think we're past the point where The Simpsons is all out of credit. Still, that doesn't mean the show has stopped try to ask for more and more credit.
About the only thing I enjoyed about "Penny-Wiseguys" were the not-so-subtle references to far superior episodes in the past.
For starters, the subplot involving Lisa's iron deficiency and subsequent bug-eating had the pre-teen vegetarian referencing the biggest influence in her decision to go meat-free: Paul McCartney. In struggling with whether or not to eat bugs, Lisa has the following exchange with Lunch Lady...

Did a drama on ABC Family really name an episode after a movie about an Orthodox kid getting lured into the ecstasy drug trade? Yes. Yes it did. "Holy Rollers" wasn't about drugs, yet it certainly ventured into religious territory.
When Grace convinced everyone in her life to attend church, did anyone really think it would go off without a hitch?
Let's just start with the fact that Adrian dropped the word "sex" in front of a 10-year-old kid. This was after she had him snap a photo of her and Omar so she could prove to Omar's mother what a nice girl she is. You can always depend on Adrian to inject a little humor into a tense situation. Besides, Adrian's comment wasn't the most inappropriate thing going on at church. Did you see Kathleen's dress?!? I wear longer dresses to the clubs.
Seriously, what an unholy mess that scenario was.

Hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, because The Gute may be coming back to movie screens near you; THR brings us the news that Steve Guttenberg and Samantha Mathis are the latest to join the cast of Affluenza, the Holy Rollers follow-up from director Kevin Asch and screenwriter Antonio Macia. The movie, which draws inspiration from the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby (which itself is getting the 3D, big-screen treatment this year), will take place right before the financial meltdown that nearly destroyed the United States in 2008.
According to Asch himself, Affluenza will deal with an American society that “was unprepared and unwilling to accept the death of the American dream.” Guttenberg and Mathis join a cast that includes Ben Rosenfield as main character Fisher Miller, Nicola Peltz, and Glee stalwart Grant Gustin, among many others. Affluenza begins shooting later this month in Great Neck, NY...

With his perpetually tweaking Ocd personality, "Social Network" Oscar-nominee Jesse Eisenberg always gets the most cinematic mileage out of dropping himself into super-frantic situations, i.e. robbing a bank ("30-Minutes or Less") or hunting the undead ("Zombieland").
