Fascinating historical evidence, marred by giving airtime to James Holland
global_dan20 November 2022
Absolutely fascinating first hand historical evidence in the form of home movies, diary entries and reminiscences by survivors.

The only criticism is that it resorts to the seemingly typical requirement of documentaries these days to give screen time to "experts", in this case committing the egregious sin of occasionally cutting to the reaction of those "experts" as they watch the film, rather than allowing the film to speak for itself.

A fascinating short film made by those in hiding in Amsterdam during the Occupation is marred by continually cutting to the "expert" watching and her reaction.

And as for whoever James Holland is, continually cutting away from the actual film to spend time on his face as says "look at that" or makes some vapid observation drove me batty. Where we can view these films without being subjected to being interrupted for these vanity shots?

Fascinating footage. Holland not so fascinating....

I have to agree completely with a previous reviewer. James Holland and his inane 'expert'(?) emotions on what he was viewing could very well have been done without. This also applies to Nina Krug albeit on a lesser scale. Contrast both with Nicholas Stargardt's contributions and you will see what I mean. The footage is amazing to see and could well have done with such a professional and knowledgeable expert as Nicholas Stargardt doing most of the analysis...

The diary extracts in themselves are very insightful and compliment the footage very well.

I would recommend this as a very worthwhile watch - just mute when James Holland appears lol.

Hard to watch but amazing found personal footage

Fascinating found footage documentary, focusing on mainly German private 8mm films taken during WW2. Coupled with written diary excerpts from persons living through the occupation in France and Germany, it gives amazing insight into life under the Germans. The show is in two parts, part one deals with the Germans in celebratory mood, as they move through Europe, part two deals with the breakdown of the regime and how it's viewed by individuals. It's a hard watch as some of the films taken are of the atrocities commited by this terrible regime. However it's well put together and serves to show future generations what can happen when a nation blindly follows a deranged, tyrannical leader.

James Holland

Disagree with previous reviewer criticising James Hollands involvement not even knowing who he is. Holland is highly knowledgeable and this was great to see the experts watching it and hear their genuine reactions. There is some amazing footage and lots of it is content which was not previously shown via military videographers. There is a real sense of the personal impact on everyday people who were both Jewish and non Jewish and how it affected them. It also gives clear insight into just how many everyday Germans were aware, particularly in the latter half of the war, the full extent of what their troops were doing to the Jewish population and the others they didn't like. Well worth watching 👍
