Finding meaning In the Graveyard
lightheartedbeing13 February 2020
This episode was both fun and deep. It's what I really like about the show, the gritty realness. As a former hospice worker, this particular episode was really great. It showed quite a spectrum of people dealing with their impending deaths that was both touching and surprisingly accurate. The other subtexts were good, too, but responding to the need for palliative care and genuine concern for what needs to happen so people have a shot at resting in peace, finishing unfinished business, and facing their fears moves you to tears, but more of gratitude than sadness. We handle death so badly, especially in hospitals that are oriented toward keeping people alive at any cost, and the costs are way too much, often. It's a privilege to engage in being with people going through the final stage of life and supporting them in what ends up being incredibly meaningul for everyone. Appreciate this show, and this episode.

WOW

Finally a show that shows heart. All other TV shows have a social agenda. These characters don't parade any of their socially awkward characteristics. They are just who they are. Their flaws and good parts are revealed through actions. Wish the new shows would learn. This may be the only network tv show I watch!

Poignant

I have had a lot of loss in my life. This one hit close to home. There are people out there that are bashing on this show for being too liberal. If being liberal means caring I can see that. I wish the doctors in this show were a reality. Between a brain tumor and beast cancer, I've seen my share of doctors. This was an amazing episode and how they addressed death was poignant, and beautiful. They address the need for our deaths to be our own in a way that I hope people that have not had to deal with this issue can still relate to. Its a good reminder to live everyday as if we won't get another.

If you don't watch any other episode, watch S2 E13, In the Graveyard. It really touched my heart. We all need to be more like Max. Death is a certainty. After watching this episode, I will definitely look at it in a different light. Please watch!!

Warning: Spoilers
Great use of classical music! I loved Adele, Max's new assistant. She really added humor and depth to this episode. I also like where Ella and Kapoor's relationship is heading, although he can be overbearing. Casey's a great character, the writers should use him more. Max' palliative care unit is a good story.

I was gonna give this episode a solid 7. Then came Bloom ignoring her patient's DNR! So unethical, even if it was "for the right reasons" (that's not how the law works). At least the writers have moved on from her addiction story and equating hydrocodone (opioids/pain pills) to adderall (amphetamines/adhd medication), right?

This whole DNR debacle brought down my rating to a 3. That's not bending the rules to help a patient: that's simply breaking the rules.

I like this show, and I will finish it and watch every episode, but I have to say the highs are high and the lows are low. You can have the most engaging, high impact and heartwarming episode followed by the most boring, agonizing one. I don't know how episodes can vary so wildly in quality.
