Netflix Finally Did It!
caleb-9696931 August 2023
I don't really know what to say about this other than I really enjoyed it. I will admit you do have to give it 10min as the first few min so feel a bit rushed and it goes by a little too fast in my opinion however after that it gets right into the meat of the story. The characters are great and there is a lot of heart and emotion to them which I really liked. I really hope the rest of the series is as good as this first episode. This show won't be for everyone I mean some of the characters are very cartoonish which isn't surprising considering the source material however it can take some getting used to. I think it is well worth pushing through though. I really hope this is successful as I want to see more and experience the one piece story in its entirety for myself as I am not caught up on the anime.

Romance Dawn
gabrielmnogueira-4214631 August 2023
One Piece was once thought impossible to adapt. Maeda and Owens have proved everyone wrong. Might be too early in to claim that, but I'm risking it. They have managed to create a very vivid and surreal world pretty faithful to the original manga. Of course it has its differences, but they are worthy of Eichiiro Oda's masterpiece. Godoy, Mackenyu and Rudd shine as Luffy, Zoro and Nami, exceptionally charming in their own rights. All the other actors are very good too. I'd only complain a bit about some fight choreographies, but not even the majority of them. Thanks Enel for this! Pretty excited to watch the remaining 7 episodes.

9/10, Amazing
dcdude-269882 September 2023
I have never watched One Piece in my life because of how many episodes the anime has, but I decided to watch the live action version with my mom. My parents aren't a big fan of anime, so I decided to trick my mom into watching the live action version of one, and she said she liked it, though I told her the truth after the episode. Anyways, my favorite characters in this episode were Luffy, Zoro, and Nami. My favorite things about this episode were the Cinematography, the action, and the storyline. Overall, this episode actually got me into thinking, "Should I watch the anime after a couple of thingsnI have to watch?". I might, but not right now.

Dedicated and great actors + realistic changes of the story = 10 stars for me
beazoneva1 September 2023
I am a big One Piece fan for like 15 years now. I read the manga and watch the anime. This Live-action is so good not just because I am a fan of One Piece but because the story was changed in a realistic way and you can see the dedications of the actors in portraying their characters. Oda-sensei had a lot of breaks because he got too busy for the premier of this Live-action and I feel so happy that I could see how he really supported this. I have seen a lot of vlogs today from nonfans of One Piece and they got hooked on the story which made them curious of the anime and manga. I am just happy to see them starting to appreciate the story. You know, good things should be shared and appreciated.

Simply amazing

Ok I am a huge fan. But they have done so good to adapt it to live action! It has never been done before with such success on any anime/manga series.

The fight scenes 10/10 The actors 10/10 The cinematics 10/10

Just finished the first episode and wow! Made be shed a tear out of pure joy and hype!

Yes, a few differences, but they have been done so good it actually compliments the storyline further with such grave you will think it has always been there!

To anyone that hates on this - I cannot understand you. They have literally given us all a pure joy ride done magnificently well!

Thank you, cast! Thank you Netflix. Thank you Goda-sensei!

Better that the anime
germangior-131 August 2023
This episode is by far better that the anime beginnings. I had a hard time watching the anime at first because the first 80 episodes are childish and slow paced. This episode had it's funny moments but also is very well paced, serious and has good actions sequences. I think it can attract a lot of people that have never been able to get through the first episodes of the anime. Special effects are very decent. Soundtrack is great. Loving this show so far and I hope it doesn't get the cowboy bebop treatment. Netflix tends to cut their shows really quickly, hopefully they can figure out a way to bring this show on par with the lengthy anime/manga series. I wanted to keep the review shorter but "requirements". Enjoy the show peeps!

Perfect live action adaption
burdoc1 September 2023
Live actions don't have a great track record especially when it comes to anime but man they really nailed this one. Inaki Godoy captures Luffy so well without feeling overly cartoonish. The other actors are great too but the Luffy casting was essential to the success of the show IMO. It's interesting to see Nami with high-level fighting skills but I think it makes sense given her success as a thief. Overall the adaption is incredibly loyal to the source material in a way that, against all odds, really works (so far). Hopefully this quality is sustained over the course of the season and if we're lucky, enough to warrant a season 2 in the grand line. Time will tell but for now take my 10/10!

Promising Beginnings
Vintgays31 August 2023
Having just watched the first episode of One Piece on Netflix, I must say that it left a positive impression. The initial episode managed to capture my interest with its engaging plot and intriguing world-building.

The storytelling in episode 1 was well-crafted, drawing viewers into the adventures of the characters. The introduction of the main characters and their motivations was executed effectively, making them relatable and worth investing in. The balance between introducing the main plot and providing glimpses of the larger story arc was commendable.

One particular highlight was the way the episode established the unique dynamics among the characters, setting the stage for future interactions and growth. The pacing felt appropriate, allowing for a gradual immersion into the world of One Piece without overwhelming the audience with too much information.

As the first episode concluded on a tantalizing note, it's natural to wonder what lies ahead in the upcoming episodes. The plot has laid the groundwork for exciting developments and potential twists. I'm eager to see how the characters' journeys unfold, the challenges they'll face, and the alliances they'll forge.

While it's too early to provide an all-encompassing judgment, the initial episode has undoubtedly set a promising tone. The series has the potential to delve deeper into character development, action sequences, and unraveling mysteries, all of which contribute to a well-rounded viewing experience.

In anticipation of the next episode, my hope is that the momentum built in the pilot continues to build, keeping the intrigue alive and maintaining the standard of storytelling that was showcased in episode 1.

In conclusion, the first episode of One Piece on Netflix has generated a strong sense of anticipation for what's to come. The foundation has been laid for an exciting journey, and I'm looking forward to experiencing the unfolding narrative as the series progresses.

Good and bad
aimranii31 August 2023
It had good and bad. I liked Rogers execution and I think they did really good with that especially that shanks and Mihawk stuff. I liked the Alvida stuff however I do NOT like luffys character there. His depth and writing was no where to be seen. He was supposed to be angry at Coby for being a coward but instead he was giving advice?? I really dislike the axe hand Morgan stuff and how much they changed that arc. I liked the Zoro-Mr 7 stuff and I really liked how it was more gore. They made axe hand stronger than he actually is but I don't mind that. What I do mind is they made that arc worse and it was already bad in the manga and anime. The best part in that arc was luffy punching Coby in the end but they completely removed that scene and again they removed luffy amazing character writing. Another thing I really dislike is how serious garp is in the live action. He also knows about boroque works but I actually don't mind that since it seems like boroque works in the live action is a lot less secretive. I really like buggy. Everything about him is perfect. The actor nailed that part especially his laugh. If luffy keeps going in this direction he's just going to be your average shallow main character with no real good writing or depth. They split his flashback and I don't mind it but I don't understand why they changed some of the scenes. Why didn't the bandit hit shanks in the face rather than than table and instead they added a corny scene of the bandit. I loved shanks sitting down and leaning in the table in the manga. It's something that I don't understand why they removed. Also I didn't like how they had shanks crew get ready for a fight when they already know that shanks isn't going to fight. And him saying "Not Everything has to be solved with violence" isn't shanks like. Saying "there's no point of fighting" or something along those lines would've been better. The show is fine but it won't Be one of the best if it keeps removing scenes that add depth and writing to certain characters. Characters like luffy shanks and Coby suffered greatly because of this.

ok Netflix but... I can't. and you shouldnt either if you didnt read the manga
JustHavingALook15 September 2023
Disclaimer: 1. I read the manga (well, part of it of course) and loved it.

2. Live action series makes me cringe.

3. if this is your first encounter with the world of one piece, do yourself a favor and DO NOT watch it. The magic will be lost forever otherwise.

Now: I do think Netflix did a neat job here, considering the limits that they had to face.

  • the one piece world is crazy. Like legit insane. I'm sure CGI folks are doing the best they can given the budget but it's just not appealing to me. Flat and fake. I get the cartoony vibes but to me just doesnt work.

  • heaps of characters: they are gonna drive the wardrobe department mental and in this first episode they were already too heavy of a presence, but that's how it is. Works on paper, not on screen.

-casting is spot on IMO : Luffy personality is the most complicated to render on screen and... it's so so. I understand why people might like him or not. Personal preference here.

  • fight scenes are well done!

My main complaint is that the pacing is off. I'm pretty sure is just my mental activity rethinking about all the time I spent reading the manga but I just felt uneasy.

One of the best first episodes anywhere
mikelmallow5 September 2023
There are very few first episodes that I like, but this may be one of the best executed (pun intended?). I had never watched the original anime, but I'm familiar enough with it that I recognized each character as they were introduced. Those introductions are fantastic, charming, and perfectly frame each character for their roles to come. The casting has been outstanding thus far. The action set pieces are fast-paced and well choreographed. The central McGuffin is an intriguing and worth the adventure to come. I'll definitely keep watching. I may even check out the anime when I hit the end of the season.

Wouldn't recommend this to anyone
aurakinski1 September 2023
This was terrible. Terrible acting. Terrible casting. Especially Luffy, Alvida and Shanks were badly chosen. Alvida used to be a terrifying, HUGE, horrible woman. Here's she's just a random gal. Shanks looks like a homeless Ryan Reynolds. And worst of all - Luffy. He is NOTHING like the cheerful but serious young boy from the manga and anime. Here he looks like some 30 year old, and sounds like any random cliché American dude. Can't take him serious or love him at all. Other than that, Gold Roger's speech fell completely flat. Cheap looking costumes. Bad special effects. Soundtrack like a knockoff Pirates of the Caribbean. No depth to the characters. This lacks all of the heart and soul that the original manga and anime had.

"Whatever you say. Oh, wait. I don't work for you."
LegendaryFang562 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(840-word review) This appears to be a commonly held opinion, and I shared it: the first half, or everything with Luffy, Koby, and Alvida, was a difficult start, even to "get through." It primarily concerned the acting of all three characters by Iñaki Godoy, Morgan Davies, and Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, with Iñaki's acting requiring some immediate adjustment, same with Morgan's acting (particularly the voice/accent, including the line delivery) to an extent - while Luffy and Koby's interactions had a bit of a whiplash, partially stemming from that, in addition to the characters themselves and their characterizations - and most notably, Ilia's acting, which was the most effective at throwing you for a loop; her and Morgan were the most distracting as far as that's concerned. You can ascertain what I'm insinuating. While Iñaki only required the continual exposure of the entire episode.

Fortunately, as the episode continued past that point, it became better and better, steadily improving. It spiked once Zoro appeared, who effortlessly stole the show for a variety of reasons, including Mackenyu's dominating presence, the fight choreography and his execution of it, and the subtle comedic tones at moments when Zoro was on-screen. Then Nami appeared - fantastic stuff; I liked the progression of her, Luffy, Zoro, and their arrival at the same place and the lead-up to them being together: a Luffy-proclaimed crew. But they're "not a crew/not together." Mackenyu and Emily Rudd, especially him, were the most distinctive highlights; all three characters, when together, stole the show collectively, aided by a palpable and genuine dynamic filled with chemistry that Luffy and Koby lacked.

Other aspects, such as the world-building and production value, were, understandably, prominently featured, as this world is vast, detailed, and particular; it was well-depicted, but I'm looking forward to the rest of the season for more of that aspect to see its overall scope, not because it wasn't good in this episode (it was), but because it can be better, and I'm sure it improves throughout. That's one reason to want another season: a larger budget and a better understanding of how to improve on many components through trial and error in this one by everyone involved with all facets of this show's development, utilizing the experience and knowledge gained here.

Going deeper into that, the set design stood out, namely the spaciousness, which I appreciated, probably more than I should have because I have no idea why. It may be summed up by saying it looks appealing; additionally, it may represent the magnitude of the entire world itself to an extent. Their environment-related details were notable, such as Helmeppo's self-portrait, the statue, paintings, the square sections of the ceiling, and the thing on the wall showing several axes in Axe-Hand Morgan's office. That gave the environments life, giving them identities and the impression that they were actual characters. You can see that a lot of thought and care went into it.

Specific things that were effective for me and great: (1.) the direction/editing regarding the close-up shots on faces - primarily the close-up shots on eyes (e.g., Mr. 7 and Zoro's at the beginning of their fight sequence), the telescope shot of Nami, the split-screen one, akin to Western-genre films and also manga panels, before the fight sequence against Axe-Hand Morgan kicked off (all that was missing was the starting pistol shot signaling to begin), and the rocky (hand-held...?) camerawork in the scene of Garp and Bogard - (2.) the score, which was unsurprisingly a hit, especially the one when the crew set sail, aside from the "Wealth Fame Power" track.

Followed by various funny moments: "I even have to paint her toenails," Luffy slapping Koby (for "You being dumb"), "A bottle for me, and one for my friend: he's had a rough day," "You stupid, stupid girl," - Helmeppo's laugh, the scene of him naked, enjoying his reflection in the mirror while swinging Zoro's sword, then the majestic arrival of Zoro, and his final appearance, especially Luffy and Zoro laughing at his new haircut, courtesy of Zoro; his entire character and Aidan Scott's performance was phenomenal, forming the desire to want more of him - "Get lost. I am...lost," and finally, Jeff Ward's performance, which is already somewhat stealing the show with so little screen time; Buggy will surely be a highlight of this season.

Zoro (Mackenyu), Helmeppo (Aidan Scott), Nami (Emily Rudd), and Buggy (Jeff Ward), along with the scenes of the crew together, where the fun began, were the ultimate show-stealers. I suspect Iñaki Godoy, who was decent despite the outstanding competition, will achieve that level during the season as he settles into the part and grows accustomed to it, making the character his and as effective as possible. There's undeniable heart at work - already in the series premiere, and that's paving the way for a larger-scale, likely successful execution of that, on top of the feeling of pure, genuine fun that took over the screen once our three central characters teamed up; little do they know what awaits them.

They actually did it
kfbdnqpbz31 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This pilot sold me on this show and the ability for OP to be adapted to live action. The acting and set pieces were fantastic but the MUSIC!! Ahh!! Definitely a stand-out with the pilot.

The humor was a lot more on point than I expected and way funnier than the trailers made it seem. Helmeppo was a highlight and was a lot more fleshed out and exciting than in the manga. I'm very interested to see where they go with characters like Garp and Coby, seems like they're set up for some more action than expected. So excited to watch the rest of the season and I think this was an incredibly strong start.

Well Done Episode
dkashwin31 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is very well directed and produced.

The scenes feel real, and feel immersive.

I love the plot progression too, kinda inspirational from the manga, but adding own twists to it, like Luffy telling Coby the story while travelling the long distance. It always didn''t make too much sense in the original that Luffy and Coby spent the time whole boat time, without talking to each other. Also Nami is confirmed to be the second joining crew by Oda already and it is finally good to see her join before Zoro, just like in Romance Dawn Spin off.

Love this episode. I will review others too once I watch them.

Amazing! amazing! amazing!
jzvfgsbc1 September 2023
I was always wondering how they will do this live action way to much to put in at one time. But they did an amazing job. Was hooked from start to finish. Please Netflix keep going with this. The characters definitely make the show come to life when I first saw Luffy I didn't think anything of it. I was just like OK but now I am super hype with Lupe. He's doing an amazing job in this show. The fight scenes are a little shorter than what the animation is, but I understand that they don't have enough time to do all the fighting scenes as long as the animation but they're doing an amazing job, and showing Lucy's string and all the other character strings please Netflix continue with the show you have made a winner.

I've been a fan of One Piece since 1998
davik-903933 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I've been a fan of One Piece since 1998. And I can honestly say that I expected the series to fail. But after watching the first episode, I changed my mind and I believe that they will be able to convey this incredible story. Without losing the magic. I want to see how they will cope with future challenges, because every next opponent Luffy is getting stronger. The beginning is beautiful. The team of actors fits perfectly. Now I have high hopes for this series.although knowing the future battles, I am very interested in how they will cope. Graphics and special effects are very expensive. Anyway, good luck to the guys on the set.

Really liked it, but small unnecessary changes infuriated me
jesper-ronge8 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I liked it, even with some of the changes to speed up getting the original trio together. It felt like a real world and it was literally the manga transferred to the screen, and my inner 15 year old (when I started reading the manga 21 years ago) would have gotten a nerdgasm.

But some of the changes that felt unnecessary made me question the direction. First thing first, Kobi should be the one telling Alvida she is ugly etc, because that is in the manga he had a big character change.

And Morgan in the manga he is cruel, wants to execute all and even kills his soldiers, feared and hated by his crew and gets arrested when his reign of terror Ens because of Luffy. In this series he is just a bit strict and a bit corrupted - I see of no reason why he should get arrested from what we saw here.

Anyways, so really want to see how they adapt the rest!

It's not bad but didn't really need to exist.
alex-56402-802676 September 2023
To summarize my thoughts, I think Netflix should have had the balls to make their own pirate show rather than piggyback off a preexisting IP. Not to say this is bad, there are some good elements, but it just doesn't feel necessary and won't hold any cultural relevance past the next few months.

The Good:
  • The score is phenomenal, bravo to the composers because it is very good and one I will be listening to in my free time.

  • The set design feels really good and, while there are some duds, it fits the story well.

The Mid:
  • The acting is hit-or-miss. I know that the actors are younger but Iñaki just doesn't have the chops to be a leading man and Mackenyu doesn't quite hold the gravitas Zorro requires. Rudd does a fairly good job with her role and Gadiot shines as Shanks. Everyone else either feels like either competent actors from Pirate of the Caribbean, or extras from Bridgerton.

  • The cinematography is either really good or really bad. There are several shots that are absolutely dazzling and others that are just so bizarre that I question why they weren't re-shot. Not terrible but could be improved.

The Bad:
  • The overall tone of this show just doesn't work. They want their gritty live-action show but then have the more juvenile and fun Shonen styling that just flagrantly clash. This was and still is my greatest concern and I don't think it will change.

  • The costume design just doesn't fit and it's not the fault of the costume designers. The main characters, with their over-the-top and funny outfits, ruin any serious scene they are in. There were so many times that I was immediately pulled out of the show because the costuming just didn't fit outside of an animated show. Had they adapted the outfits to a more natural and period-accurate style then it wouldn't be so bad. But as it stands, this is way too distracting and makes it hard to watch.

  • The adaptation of the story is just plain boring. I love One Piece, it is charming and has pacing that allows for a slow introduction but a thorough understanding of the characters and setting. This tries to shortcut things and ends up in the same pitfalls every streaming show falls into. There is little action, way too much of this show is people standing in talking with fairly uninteresting dialogue. Yes, the show had to be adapted and abridged but you could either follow the show more closely or cut out so much more of this fluff. In episode one, we jump through nearly all of the most boring parts of the first few episodes of the original show. Shonen Manga, typically, is carried by visuals alone, without the fun action spectacles you're left with Shonen's greatest weakness, the quiet moments, which are often a little boring. This is primarily why I probably won't finish this show.

Overall, this show is a dud for me. I would have much rather seen a creative and new Netflix pirate show, and then if I wanted One Piece I would watch the much better anime. So do I recommend this? No, I do not. I'm glad many other One Piece finds are finding happiness in this show but it is not for me.

A good beginning for this series
gerardsanchis-7230731 August 2023
I give the episode 10 stars because it is deserving of praise after delivering what seems to be a good adaptation of one of the most difficult animes to take into life.

The action scenes were perfect, the scenery was astonishing, the acting was on point, and, while they disrespected the original source (regretfully), it still holds up.

The only real problem would be not giving enough fluid dialogue between the characters and better pacing between scenes; instead, occasionally they spit and condense the original lines into the scenes so they can cover as much content as they can, resulting in awkward moments here and there.

This would be the case for the first conversations between two of the main characters, Koby and Luffy, where they try to build the themes that surround them the same way the original work did instead of letting them express themselves in a more realistic fashion. And of course, the omission of some scenes made the connection between these two characters feel less believable.

Outside of that, I do not feel like the changes they made worsened the experience. The dialogues though, are poorly translated from the manga to the series, almost like an amateur was in charge of them. However, they added original content, and I'm more than sure it will satisfy the fans. Don't be scared, this isn't a bad live action at all!

Good start but too much Nami
Ziro1031 August 2023
The world of One Piece feels alive and believable, just like in the manga and anime. So I think the makers have already made half the battle.

The fact that Zoro meets an agent of Baroque Works who wants to recruit him is something we've only heard about in Zoro's story so far. I found this meeting as an introduction for Zoro very fitting.

Zoro's fight scenes are very good to watch.

However, there were some things I didn't like very much:

  • Too much Nami. At the beginning, it should be about Luffy and Zoro meeting alone and just the two of them starting their journey, like in the manga. He is Luffy's first member. Instead, the scene where Zoro agrees to join the crew is simply skipped or postponed and they set off as a threesome, with Nami, who has too much screen time and too many combat skills.

  • Atmospheric scenes like Coby telling Luffy and Zoro about the Grandline or Morgan telling about the Devils Fruit were left out.

  • Luffy is a little too sly and clever in his statements. The creators should be careful that Inaki doesn't get the upper hand over Luffy.

I have to admit that I was sceptical at the beginning, but all in all I can say that the start with all its surroundings is enjoyable.

IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD!!!
Mxdaraa31 August 2023
"One Piece" a Netflix Series, based on the Manga by Eiichiro Oda, follows Monkey D. Luffy on his quest to find the One Piece. When the first trailer for the show released on Youtube, fans of the source material, as well as completely new viewers were skeptical on whether this show would be actually good or a complete dumpster fire. Anime live-adaptations don't have a reputation of being good, examples being the Cowboy Bebop Netflix adaptation, as well as the Death Note Movie. So understandably, fans would be skeptical. But as more trailers for the show released, fans started becoming hopeful. What looked the most promising in the trailers were definitely the actors and the set design. And I must say, they nailed those two aspects in the live action adaptation. Pretty much every character looks accurate to its Manga/Anime counterpart and the actors nail their character's respective personality, especially Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy and Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro. And as previously mentioned, the set design is so accurate and brilliantly incorporated into the live action aesthetic, it's genuinely beautiful. My only real complaint is the CGI for Luffy's Powers... Many people commented on Luffy's Devil Fruit looking weird and iffy in the trailer and unfortunately it doesn't look much better in the actual show, but it doesn't take away much of the enjoyment, so it's somewhat passable. Overall, this is a great start to the show and I hope it keeps this quality. 8/10 A very good Episode.

Iñaki has Luffy spirit
renemx31 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Great introduction to the world of One Piece. Iñaki is spot on as Luffy, also the introduction of Zoro hunting Mr 7 is an excellent use of One Piece lore.

The actress who plays Alvida is also spot on. The origin of Helmeppo's haircut is better than in the manga IMO.

Coby is a great character and balances well Luffy to ground his character in this universe.

Nami seems more confident in this episode than I remember on the manga, but I feel more appropriate for this adaptation and medium.

The set designs are gorgeous specially Alvida's ship and Morgan's base.

For me the only thing missing is more screen time for Chouchou.

After So Much Streaming Trash, A Breath of Fresh Air
infinitetyler24 September 2023
I try not to give 1's and 10's, but this show is really enjoyable. I like the characters, the writing and the aesthetics. This is a fantastic opening episode, and I'm thinking about other things that are maybe not the same in genre but have equally good opening episodes and I would argue it's on par with something like Breaking Bad or Heroes. And in the context of "modern entertainment" I really appreciate that it's not trying to bait fans with erratic casting choices or delivering lectures about the evils of the patriarchy(or pushing any social politics at all for that matter!). They're even allowing men to be good natured and competent! Who would have thought?? It seems like the show runners simply tried to be faithful to a series that millions of people already love- was that too much to ask? I have not seen the anime, but I may try to slog through the 15 seasons after this just because I like the characters so much and 95% of what's been released in the last 5-10 years is garbage. A shining beacon in The Dark Age of entertainment.
