Stop asking for so much and enjoy good tv
jacktaylorboomin2 September 2023
Netflix is notorious for having a sort of "cringey" feel to their originals. Myself, as well as anyone you ask, we're skeptical about this show. The first two episodes in my opinion were great (reviews agree). The only hate I've seen is towards this show regardless of the side plays is this ep. I disagree. I think the Kaya casting was great. Usopp casting is absolutely phenomenal and he was who I was most skeptical about going into the adaptation. I also feel that this episode really adds to zoro and makes his character in this series so much more in tune with the true manga/anime adaptation. The introduction to Arlong also nipped any reservations I had towards that character/adaptation of said character directly in the bud. Extremely excited to see where this series goes.

Syrup Village (Part 1)
gabrielmnogueira-421462 September 2023
Syrup Village isn't the best arc in One Piece. In fact, it is often ranked as one of the worst, and rightfully so. It is filled with not-so-useful characters and cringey quirks that are more annoying than entertaining. It is not surprising that a lot of changes are made; some for better, some for worse. In this first part of the adaptation, we get to meet Kaya, Buchi, Klahador and Sham, as well as Usopp and Merry. Jacob Romero is very charming as our Sharpshooter in a nonchalant, childish sense. The other characters are... forgettable. Kaya is still sweet and lovable, but feels to cartoony, just as the other characters. I'm glad, at least, that some changes are made when it comes to the fate of minor characters.

Not as great as one and two
turtleking-793082 September 2023
Episodes one and two left me wanting more but this one not so much. The main cast made a strong showing and stayed true to the source material. This even made me feel sorry for Usopp. His back story is kinda touching. Klahadore was believable as both a butler and a pirate. Sham was fun. Kaya not so much. The set designs really gave it that B horror movie feel. Zorro's back story and episode story lines were well done but, they needed to fix the hair dyes for the younger versions. They fell kinda flat but it might have just not worked with the lighting choices. The condensing of story lines was well meshed. This series has the potential to be one of the best renditions of a live action anime.

Hilarious Luffy, Missing Dialogues, and Promising Character Development in One Piece Episode 3
aashish2271 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Luffy walking on the table and trying to convince Kaya was hilarious.

A very important dialog being missed as shanks didn't say it earlier in the 2nd episode as well which was - "Now that you have drawn your pistol, put your life on the line. I am saying those are not for threatening people." I loved Luffy copying this line of Shanks in front of Ussop and many more times he copied Shanks, it was a interesting/loved detail in the anime and wish it'd been kept but I respect the creative decisions still.

The build up of Garp and Coby relationship/mentorship is amazing which we didn't get to see in Anime until later on.

Helmeppo being left out right now, I don't like it as much but I guess this leaves room for character development. Smart move nonetheless.

"That went pretty well. Don't you think?"
LegendaryFang569 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(576-word review) I can already imagine many viewers disliking this episode, both those who have read the manga (or watched the anime) and those who are new to this universe. Some may even go so far as to call it terrible, complaining about specific aspects, such as the camera angles (which I consider a knee-jerk reaction) because the fact that camerawork can be done in different ways and not the usual way must be so shocking, immediately chalking it up to poor directing/cinematography ('different' is good, even if you aren't always onboard with it; that's fine - but don't get overly exasperated about it), and so on. The camera work of the scene with Luffy and Zoro near the wanted posters was most certainly the worst offender; interestingly enough, that stood out to me in the opposite fashion - I thought it was great.

While this was the weakest episode, that is not to suggest it wasn't good or a noticeable drop compared to the first two episodes, as some have expressed. If your main complaint, or one of them, was that it was boring, it's because it was the first episode of a two-parter. And, 90% of the time, the first half in these scenarios is the weakest. That said, an adequate job was done in making it enjoyable, even though this section in the manga has been stated to be poor overall.

99% of the help with that was probably given through the character moments - that appeared to be the most dominant focus here, and it was a success. All of the interactions involving the "Not a crew" crew were fantastic, as they should be, from the dinner scene (Iñaki Godoy was Luffy to the fullest there, outdoing himself) to Nami and Kaya's conversation/the kitchen scene with Usopp (in addition to his involvement in others), particularly the smaller snippets between Luffy, Zoro, and Nami.

Buggy's interaction with Arlong was also beneficial and the best part of this episode. That was an important scene for two reasons: (one.) it changed the playing field established previously, where Buggy is seemingly a top-dog figure, only for the subtlety of that to crumble down so quickly due to Arlong's introduction, and (two.) through that alone, rearranged the board or interfered with the process of its establishment as the season is merely three episodes in, effectively updating the stage and getting the point across that he's a threat, plus the score cue was good, as were the score cues during the ship reveal and after Kuro killed Merry.

Additionally, Jacob Gibson has already embodied the character of Usopp, who, despite not being as charismatic as Luffy, whether true to the characters or not, you can tell Jacob must be in real life, not to mention charming, since that subtle impression also adds to the portrayal/performance. The only issue I have is the ineffectiveness of the end of the backstory/flashback plot thread, mainly because the kid-version actor wasn't good, and Usopp's mother died too abruptly, adding a comedic tone.

Also, Alexander Maniatis played Kuro superbly, with the appropriate blend of properness but with that ominous undertone beneath the mask of politeness bleeding through the sheer appearance of his complete decorum, as if he were transferred straight from the manga. Everyone else who partook in bringing him to life and the work they put in, from costume design to hair styling, did an excellent job, and Celeste Loots played her character well.

Ok 👌
marwan111 October 2023
Generally .. The series is on the rise and the narrative of the events is very interesting .. There are moments in which there is a big deviation from the anime and there are moments in which the exact same dialogues, but what I like the most is that no matter how different the events, we all finally reach the same result .. The thing I like the most is the dialogues are written correctly .. The results and results are still balanced and promising .. I liked the performer of the role of Usup, it is clear that he understood the character and studied it correctly, even the way he talked to Kaya and his actions, everything was great in him, although I hate him in the anime, but he performed Usup in a good way ... The flashback with his mom was the worst of the worst, it was only 5 seconds and the kid is obviously not affected by the death if his mother, it's the opposite of the anime ... But most of the things in the episode go astray, I like that they put the bear in hiding, as we often see in the anime, I'm sure it's Oda's touch .. In general, a good episode pulled me throughout its run, and I hope the series will continue on this approach.

Bad Acting and awkward dialogs.
jarlebf4 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
First of all. I didnt see the anime BUT: How bad is the general acting and especially in this episode??. To the cliche one-liners to the awkward dialogs, i cant help but not believe any of this.

Usopp tops it of with the worst acting i've seen. (especially in the cellar with the cat-pirates) Im guessing the target audience is 10-15 y for this to be believable.

Perfect for the young Usopp scenes which also was very predictable.

Its really hard to find something positive to say really.

The scenery, costumes and design of the world is 10/10 though.

CGI is also good :)

I really dont understand the 8.5 overall score though.

Its somewhere between 6-7 for me.

Hard to get through
davidolsonn28 October 2023
I found this episode very hard to get through. It was painfully obvious what was going on. The whole function of this episode is to set up the next episode. The next episode is great. But this episode is just one massive cliché. There was more than one moment when I just had to skip through some scenes because they were way too predictable and cringe. Which isn't a great combination.

What did I like about this episode? The characters. What did I hate? The plot.

There was some interesting stuff going on the the B and C plot, but the A plot was just awful in the extreme. Still, I'd recommend just powering through this episode so you can watch the rest of the show which is quite good.

Some very bad script decisions
turaiabel31 August 2023
I don't like the actress of kaya, I hate what they did to Buggy. He's just a clown. But in a bad way. In the anime/manga he was funny and ridiculous too, you could take him serious. And in this adaptation you can't. And I don't like those filler scenes with corby. I think that was a very bad casting decision. But I do like Usopp. The actor portrays him very well in my opinion. And the flying lamb looks good as well.

Conclusion: it's a very mid episodes with some very bad but some good casting decisions. The cinematography is decent. And the choreography isn't bad. I liked the first too episodes much better.
