It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

John Bailey, the cinematographer on Ordinary People, Groundhog Day, As Good as It Gets and dozens of other notable films who endured two “stressful” terms as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, died Friday. He was 81.

”It is with deep sadness I share with you that my best friend and husband, John Bailey, passed away peacefully in his sleep early this morning,” she said in a statement. “During John’s illness, we reminisced how we met 60 years ago and were married for 51 of those years. We shared a wonderful life of adventure in film and made many long-lasting friendships along the way. John will forever live in my heart.”

If you fancy getting your hands on Bob Ross‘ first-ever TV painting, you’re in luck. Well, that’s if you have a cool $9.8 million to spare. “A Walk in the Woods,” the oil painting that Ross created in 1983 on the first episode of his iconic art program The Joy of Painting, is currently listed on the Modern Artifact website for $9.85 million by gallery owner Ryan Nelson. “What this piece represents is the people’s artist,” Nelson told ABC News. “This isn’t an institution that’s telling you that Bob Ross is great. It’s not some high-brow gallery telling you that Bob Ross is great. This is the masses, the population in the world, that are saying that Bob Ross is great.” Ross, who passed away in 1995, hosted The Joy of Painting on PBS from 1983 to 1994. He became hugely popular from his easy-to-follow instructional videos and his iconic permed hair.

The original Max series “Full Circle” debuts on July 13. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, the new drama investigates a kidnapping gone wrong in New York, revealing the secrets and lies of multiple characters. Or as the trailer warns: “Everything is connected.” The six-episode limited series stars Zazie Beetz, Claire Danes, Jim Gaffigan, Jharrel Jerome, Timothy Olyphant, and Dennis Quaid.
Watch the “Full Circle” trailer:
The four-part documentary “Last Call: When A Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York” is set in the early 1990s as the AIDS crisis worsens. The media’s distorted coverage of the gay victims, coupled with the homophobic biases of the criminal justice system, undermine the investigation. The docuseries — which premieres on Max on July 9 — illustrates how the LGBTQ+ community fought to solve the murders and demand attention for those murdered.

A solitary man roams a mountainous forest. He is clad in coarse furs and carries a rough bow for hunting, an essential survival task at which he is, alas, not very good. So he descends from the wilderness to forage in… a gas-station convenience store?
It’s a bone-dry opener to the male midlife crisis Danish filmmaker Thomas Daneskov is toying with in his second feature, Wild Men, but it’s pretty much the most intriguing bit of play this deeply black comedy manages. Oh, there’s definitely stuff worth spending time with here, but this odyssey of modern manhood is far more daring in what it is attempting than it how it succeeds, or not.
The man on the mountain is Martin (Rasmus Bjerg), who has “just grown tired of everything” — by which he means his loving wife and two small daughters, and the corporate job we may presume...

Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy winner Kathy Bates, two-time Oscar nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich and Lewis Pullman have signed on to star in Thelma, an indie directed by two-time Emmy nom Ken Kwapis.
Thelma recounts the true story of the mother of John Kennedy Toole (Pullman), the Pulitzer Prize winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces. Toole died by suicide before finding a home for his masterpiece, and his mother Thelma (Bates) made it her life’s mission, through outrageous gamesmanship, to see the book published. She eventually succeeded in getting the manuscript into the hands of writer Walker Percy (Malkovich), who became the novel’s champion. It would be published in 1980, eleven years after Ken’s death, thereafter becoming a widely celebrated cult classic.

The end of summer and start of fall has seen the release of several books that qualify as major entries in film studies—specifically Fun City Cinema and Inland Empire—along with some wild, wooly appreciations for the likes of Shaun of the Dead and Kevin Smith. Read on for details about these and much more.
Fun City Cinema: New York City and the Movies That Made It by Jason Bailey (Abrams Books)
Billed as a visual history of a century of filmmaking in New York City, Fun City Cinema is the book NYC deserves, Jason Bailey without question the right author for the job. As he showed in books on Richard Pryor and 1970s detective pictures, Bailey is adept at analyzing why certain films and individuals make such a deep impact on the cultural and artistic landscape. Sundance is the biggest market for indie films around, and for good reason. The festival has a history of finding the quirky, independent crowd-pleaser that goes on to be a box office smash. 2020 saw a record sale of $17.5 million for the Andy Samberg comedy “Palm Springs,” which proved to be one of Hulu’s biggest movies ever. And while some films fizzle at the box office despite their festival hype, many more manage to sustain that buzz all the way until Oscar season. Here’s a few that made a splash at both Park City and for wide audiences. All box office figures are domestic numbers.
15. “A Walk in the Woods” (2015) – $29.5 million
It should come as no surprise that Robert Redford premiered a movie he starred in at at his own festival. But he also proved that he still carries some box office clout. The film, acquired by Broad Green Pictures,...

Exclusive: Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent Pictures, Nine Days producer Mandalay Pictures and Book Club writer-director Bill Holderman are teaming up on a feature adaptation of WWII tale The Last Ridge about the 10th Mountain Division, a troop of U.S. expats-turned-soldiers who helped turn the tide against the Nazis in Europe.
Holderman will adapt McKay Jenkins’ non-fiction book which charts a remarkable true story. When World War II broke out in Europe, the American army had no specialized division of mountain soldiers. That changed after an amateur skier named Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole convinced the U.S. Army to let him recruit an extraordinary assortment of expats, wealthy ski bums, mountaineers, and thrill-seekers and form them into a band of Alpine soldiers.
The group included the Sierra Club’s David Brower, Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, and Aspen Skiing Corporation founder Friedl Pfeifer.
The men endured nearly three years of gruelling training in the Colorado Rockies and forged 10th Mountain Division which finally faced combat in the winter of 1945 in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, against the seemingly unbreakable German fortifications north of the Gothic Line. There, they planned and executed one of the most daring nighttime mountain attacks in U.S. military history, smashing a linchpin of the German army’s lines.
Argent’s Jill Ahrens, Ryan Ahrens and Ben Renzo, and Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman will produce the film with Holderman and Erin Simms of their banner Apartment Story. Executive producers are Argent partners Drew Brees, Tony Parker, Michael Finley, and Derrick Brooks with co-executive producers Eric Bromberg and Stephen Michael.
Argent’s Ryan Ahrens said, “Very few details about the U.S. Army’s elite 10th Mountain Division have been introduced to the generations that followed WWII. This story is long overdue, so we’re happy to be entrusted with the source material to tell a cinematic story depicting the courage, sacrifice and heroism of this group of men.”
Mandalay’s Jason Michael Berman added, “I have had a very strong desire and passion to help tell the story of the heroes that made up the 10th Mountain Division ever since I first learned about them and their bravery while a teenager who often visited Colorado with my family growing up. Bill Holderman and I have been talking about this incredible true story since the first day we met at the Sundance Intsitute Labs back in 2014. It is so exciting to collaborate with my close friends and partners at Argent, Jill, Ryan and Ben, to bring this project to life with Bill and Erin.”
Holderman, well known for hit 2018 comedy Book Club, which took more than $100M, and Bill Bryson story A Walk In The Woods, commented, “This is one of the great untold stories in American history and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Jason, Jill, Ryan, Ben and of course, my partner in crime, Erin, to bring this harrowing and triumphant tale to the masses.”
He quipped, “Following on the heels of Book Club, I feel like I’m pigeon-holing myself but those are worries for another day…”
American Made and Hacksaw Ridge backer Argent recently finished shooting Good Joe Bell with Mark Wahlberg and Connie Britton. Recent Mandalay films include Edson Oda’s Sundance hit Nine Days, which was picked up by Sony Classics, and upcoming Netflix original The Last Days Of American Crime with Edgar Ramirez.
The project marks the fourth collaboration between Argent and Mandalay Pictures in the last year following Netflix’s Uncorked, Fox Sports boxing story They Fight and upcoming horror-comedy Bride And Doom.
Holderman is represented by Wme and Paul Hastings.

The “Watchmen” pilot episode dropped a bombshell on American history: Oscar winner and Sundance Film Festival co-founder Robert Redford is the President of the United States and has been for 26 years and counting. Any “Watchmen” fan wondering over the last five weeks how Redford becoming the U.S. president changed the course of movie history is in luck thanks to /Film, which spoke to showrunner Damon Lindelof and got all the details one could possibly want on the topic.
When it comes to the Sundance Film Festival, Redford stepped down and left the Sundance organization in 1993 because he feared “that his political enemies would accuse him of using the institution as a mechanism for promoting his political agenda in the culture.” As U.S. president, Redford stayed committed to the arts by hiring acclaimed photographer Andres Serrano “to rebuild the National Endowment for the Arts following decades of reduction and...

Sophia Lillis is hot on the trail of her latest mystery in this new clip for Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. It looks like someone has broken into the house she is living in and has given her a scare, and she is trying to get to the bottom of who is was, how they got in, and why they were there.
The Nancy Drew books were so much fun for me when I was a kid. I loved that I never saw the twists and turns coming, but that they were all being solved by a girl about my age. When there weren’t a whole of major female role models, Nancy Drew was there. She was ahead of her time, and the books totally hold up through any decade, in my opinion. So I think it is smart and fun that this movie can reintroduce the iconic character to a new generation.

“Every small town has a dark side."
The first trailer has dropped for the upcoming new film Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase which stars Sophia Lillis, who played Beverly in the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's It. She seems like the perfect fit to play this classic character and it looks like a film that my girls will enjoy.
The film focuses on Nancy Drew (Lillis), "a smart high schooler with a penchant for keen observation and deduction, who stumbles upon the haunting of a local home. A bit of an outsider struggling to fit into her new surroundings, Nancy and her pals set out to solve the mystery, make new friends, and establish their place in the community."
The film is being directed by Katt Shea (Poison Ivy) from a script written by Nina Fiore and John Herrera (The Handmaid’s Tale, The Vampire Diaries).

Europe’s mainstay fest for cinematography, newly rechristened EnergaCamerimage, launched its 26th edition and a week of 241 film screenings in the Polish town of Bydgoszcz on Saturday with a guest appearance by Roman Polanski.
The controversial but seminal director of classics such as “Rosemary’s Baby” and “Chinatown” took the stage to honor a longtime colleague, cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, with a lifetime achievement award for his luminous lensing. The pair, who shared stories from film school in Poland under the former communist regime, worked together in 1988 on “Frantic,” the Paris-set thriller starring Emmanuelle Seigner, now Polanski’s wife.
The master lenser also filmed “The Wedding” and the Oscar-nommed “The Promised Land,” both directed by Andrzej Wajda.
Fest director Marek Zydowicz credited Sobocinski with influencing a generation of cinematographers, noting he continues to teach at the Lodz film school that has set dozens of future directors and camera people on their professional paths.

Telluride/Toronto documentary Free Solo ascended to some of the best opening box office stats of the year and even scaled new peaks in the nonfiction realm. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the National Geographic Film/Greenwich Entertainment release grossed a massive $300,804 in just four theaters, averaging $75,201, the best opening-weekend PTA of 2018, climbing over previous title holder, Eighth Grade. The bow for the film about Alex Honnold’s attempt to scale Yosemite’s 3,200-foot El Capitan without a rope also is the best opening-weekend PTA for a documentary ever, overtaking 2006 Oscar winner An Inconvenient Truth, which averaged $70,333 in its opening frame in four locations. Free Solo’s opening all but assures it’ll join the year’s big three docs, Rbg Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and Three Identical Strangers as 2018’s nonfiction behemoths.

Chicago – If your impression of a book club is one of staid pseudo-intellectuals creating pithy symbolism out of nothingness, then your impression is about to change. Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen star in the new comedy “Book Club,” co-written by Erin Simms and director Bill Holderman.
The awesome foursome – all nominated for Oscars at one point, with three winners – portray members of the title activity, which has been together for 40 years. When Vivian (Jane Fonda) brings in the book “Fifty Shades of Grey,” it titillates and upends the lives of the other club members. Sharon (Candice Bergen), a Federal Judge, begins to look for love again after many years on the sidelines. Diane (Diane Keaton) is a retired widow, but finds her engines revved by a handsome pilot (Andy Garcia). Carol is a chef and wife to Bruce (Craig T. Nelson), and wants to ignite the fire in her marriage again,...

For that part of the moviegoing audience that might be over age 25 — or even, say, 50 — it just doesn’t get much better than having a quartet like Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen together in one smart, funny, warm and wonderful movie. Book Club, as I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), is a must-see for audiences looking for a feel-good movie that lifts you up and sends you out of the theater with a big smile. That’s what this one does, and you can’t beat the sensational premise.

Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen were some of the most seductive stars of the 1970s, with boundary-pushing fare like “Klute,” “Barbarella,” and “Carnal Knowledge” winning critical acclaim and filling theaters.
Five decades later, the question is whether their fanbase will turn for the decidedly more commercial “Book Club,” set to open wide on May 18 in a counterprogramming play against Fox’s potent sequel “Deadpool 2.”
Bergen, Fonda, Diane Keaton, and Mary Steenburgen stopped by the CinemaCon convention in April to banter and drink wine on stage, with Bergen quipping that she took exception to their introduction as “living legends.”
The film follows four friends — aged 65 and above — whose lives are disrupted when their book club decides to read E. L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Though the film is rated PG-13, the steamy novel puts them each in the mood to discover new romance or reunite with a former flame.

When the Academy Board of Governors convened Tuesday night to pick the 34th AMPAS president, all eyes were on Laura Dern as the frontrunner. Instead, the outcome was a surprise: While three potential candidates had emerged from the 54-member body, including popular actors branch governor Dern, with her career in full-throttle she declined her nomination and supported casting director David Rubin, who was eventually elected Treasurer. Documentarian Rory Kennedy did not get an expected nomination; instead cinematographer John Bailey ran against Rubin.
Finally the board voted for Bailey, who represents the 7000-member Academy’s still-dominant constituents: older white men. Hammond brothers let go of approximately 20% of workforce.
Broad Green co-founders Gabriel and Daniel Hammond have closed their production department and laid off 15 of the 75-strong staff following a string of under-performing films.
Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, who serve as CEO and chief creative officer respectively, plan to reconfigure Broad Green’s operations and find a new way to source films.
The acquisitions team is expected to be on the ground in Toronto and other festivals, and the company has scheduled a November 22 release for Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones caper film Villa Capri.
Around 50 development projects have gone into turnaround. Gabriel Hammond, a former Wall Street wunderkind who along with his brother used their own money to fund Broad Green, confirmed the development on Wednesday in a remarkably frank interview with Deadline Hollywood in which he said the brothers accepted all blame for failure.

The news comes in the wake of the latest sub-par box office...

Broad Green: How Wall Street Wealth, A-List Talent, and Brash Decisions Made an Indie Player Implode
It takes guts to join the indie distribution fray, especially when the market is challenged by big buyers like Netflix and Amazon Studios (which, along with Annapurna, is optimistically taking over its own theatrical distribution) and television is chasing down the hottest indie talent. Even one-time high-flyer The Weinstein Co., which once knew better than anyone how to play the indie game, is evolving to survive during these changing times.
When Wall Street billionaires Gabriel Hammond, 38, and his brother, Daniel, 34, launched independent producer-distributor Broad Green Pictures three summers ago, Hollywood was skeptical. It was a strange time to reinvent a dying economic model.
Now, after trying to use arcane algorithms to determine what movies to make, Gabriel has decided to pull the plug on production. The breaking point was the July 14 release of John Leonetti’s “Wish Upon,” which grossed $13.2 million on a $12 million budget. (Theaters return about half of the take to the distributor,...

When Paul Newman passed away in 2008, Robert Redford had been working on “A Walk In The Woods” (which he’d later make with Nick Nolte) as a potential project to make with his longtime friend. Another vehicle the duo had kicked the tires on was crime pic, “Highwaymen,” and it’s been percolating in development for years. Back in 2013, Woody Harrelson and Liam Neeson were eyed as the new leads, but, while Neeson has exited, another name is coming aboard.

According to Deadline, Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda are set to star alongside Candice Bergen in Book Club, a comedy film that will be the directorial debut of A Walk In The Woods producer Bill Holderman. The report says that Book Club will be a “heartfelt comedy” about a group of older ladies who read Fifty Shades Of Grey for their book club, which makes it sound a lot more erotic than your average heartfelt comedy. Apparently, reading the book causes these women to “have their lives changed forever,” and though it’s “not the type of book that they typically read,” it will soon make them realize that “inspiration can come in the most unlikely of places.”

The Hollywood Reporter has learned Hilary Swank and Michael Shannon have climbed aboard What They Had, a new drama from writer-director Elizabeth Chomko.
They’ll join Robert Forster, Blythe Danner and Taissa Farmiga in a project that centers on a woman who circles back to her hometown in order to care for her ailing mother. Production is due to get underway in Chicago next week, March 22nd, ahead of a release sometime in 2018. In its journey to the starting line, What They Had accrued a host of producing support, too, including Bill Holderman (A Walk In The Woods) and Albert Berger (Little Miss Sunshine), so it’s exciting to hear the news that Chomko has matched that back-of-house talent with a host of top-tier acting talent.
