Prepare to see “Fallout” like you’ve never seen it before. Amazon Prime Video’s latest series may be based on the bestselling video games of the same name, but with new characters and mysteries, it’s sure to surprise even diehard fans.
Set in an alternate version of Earth, the series takes place in the same desolate world as the original games. After advances in nuclear technology following World War II led to the emergence of a retrofuturistic society, an apocalyptic nuclear exchange wiped out Earth as the people of 2077 knew it. Those who could afford it hid in their Vault-Tec vaults. As for the rest of humanity, they were forced to confront the horrors of this new world head on. Now over 200 years after that war, one young Vault Dweller will risk it all and travel to the surface.
Wondering which antihero to root for in this sci-fi dramedy?...

Channing Tatum, a natural athlete who found that college was not to his liking, moved to Tampa in his teens to work construction and found an outside gig as a male stripper at night. To Tatum’s credit, he never denied his stripping gig but instead turned it into artistic gold (years after he became an actor) with a hit franchise you may have heard about: “Magic Mike” (2012), “Magic Mike Xxl” (2015) and “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023).
After being discovered by a talent scout, Tatum started his career with small movie parts until he snagged the lead in “Step Up,” (2006), a successful dance/romance mash-up. Tatum’s looks and athleticism, as well as his dancing and acting skills attracted casting directors, who began to place him in bigger and bigger films.

A new animated TV series is in the works inspired by a video game featured in “Boy Kills World,” the upcoming martial arts action film starring Bill Skarsgård as a deaf boy trained to enact vengeance on those who murdered his family.
“Super Dragon Punch Force 3,” the real-life action-packed fighter video game that appears in the film (and will launch day-and-date with the U.S. and global release of “Boy Kills World” on April 26), has had its own animated series greenlit. Now in development, the show, which is set to dive into the universe of the game, will follow a highly-skilled yet dysfunctional team of misfits as they fight to defend their world from sentient robots, an ancient network of cultists and other intergalactic threats.

To say that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was great would be a major understatement, as it greatly impacted how major studios perceived 3D animation. Following its impeccable quality, accompanied by a great story, arguably the best of all Spider-Man features. the Shameik Moore-led film was deservedly awarded the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
And with its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse, being on par with the first one, it seemed like another Academy win awaited the IP, but it fell inches short of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Reacting to this loss, lead star Moore took to social media to share a one-word response “Robbed”, which landed him in hot waters, and the actor has finally broken his silence amidst the backlash.

Plenty of classic TV shows have gotten the big-screen reboot treatment — among them Get Smart, 21 Jump Street, Baywatch, and, of course, Mission: Impossible. Bullet Train filmmaker and John Wick co-director David Leitch hopes to bring a new vision to the ‘80s series The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling as its lead, but despite the best efforts of everyone involved, it ends up being just another underwhelming studio action flick.
In the film, Gosling plays a stuntman who gets pulled out of retirement to track down the missing star of his ex-girlfriend’s new film, only to be thrown into a complex web of conspiracies. With his background being in stunts, it’s understandable what Leitch likely saw in Drew Pearce and Glen A. Lawson’s script. Unfortunately, this potential is largely squandered on a middling entry to the genre.

South by Southwest is a festival like none other. Spread across the bustling streets of Downtown Austin, the convergence event truly has something for everyone.
South by Southwest, better known as SxSw, is a tech conference meets music festival meets film festival. With hundreds of films, bands, startups, and established brands all over the city, the energy is unrivaled.
This year is no different as thousands prepare to arrive at the Texas capitol this week.
I will be lucky enough to attend this year’s festival for a whole week and the film lineup is one of the strongest in years. SxSw is a great combination of established, anticipated films mixed with independent films with massive potential to be the next big thing.
In the past some of the competition films that have premiered at the festival have been Short Term 12, Peanut Butter Falcon, Tiny Furniture. Krisha, and more.

I recently recapped the fascinating Best Actor race of 2003, in which saw Sean Penn in “Mystic River” win the first of his two Best Actor Oscars. (He would prevail again five years later for “Milk.”)
Regarding Penn’s first victory, he faced stiff competition not only from Bill Murray in “Lost in Translation” but also Johnny Depp in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Depp hadn’t initially been considered much of a threat — until he pulled off a huge upset at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
A dedicated Gold Derby reader has since asked me how Depp managed to surprise at SAG. Figuring that others might be wondering the same thing, I thought that I would offer everyone in awards land my Top 5 reasons why. And here they are.

It takes multiple hands of masters, artists and filmmakers to bring a story to life, no matter the cinematic medium. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has designated categories to recognize the achievements of artists working on animation, documentary features, and shorts, an opportunity to be rewarded. However, just because you directed or produced one of these specialty films doesn’t mean these contributions will be officially named in the Oscar nominations.
To the untrained Oscar eye, it might not be obvious that despite “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” picking up a nomination for best animated feature, one of the three directors, Joaquim Dos Santos, was not among the listed nominees. It’s an arbitrary rule of the Academy that only four “teams” may be recognized in the animated feature category.

He worked on a wide range of films from “The Jerk” to “21 Jump Street.” He served as stunt coordinator on “Red Dragon” (2002), “No Strings Attached” (2011), “My Sister’s Keeper,” “Romeo Must Die” (2000), “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993) and “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989), among many other projects. Some of his television credits include “Jag,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “Chaos,” “Bosch” and “NCIS.”
In a 2021 interview with Variety celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Stuntmen’s Association — for which he served as president multiple times — Palmisano reflected on his career alongside colleagues Bob Herron, Alex Daniels and Terry Leonard.
He shared of his on set experiences, “We live our lives between two words: ‘action’ and ‘cut.’ When you start, they don’t give you the death-defying stunts. You might get knocked down or a flying stunt,...

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

Could Kitt ride again? Scooper Daniel Richtman took to his Patreon to claim that not only is Universal Pictures developing a Knight Rider movie, but that John Cena is already attached to star.
Richtman added that Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (The Package) are writing the script. Of course, nothing has been confirmed at this time, but it’s somewhat surprising that Knight Rider hasn’t received a modern big-screen update like so many of its ’80s brethren. We’ve seen The A-Team, 21 Jump Street, The Equalizer, Miami Vice, and more all make the leap to the big screen, so why not Knight Rider? The classic series starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a former detective given a new identity by a tech billionaire to help fight crime. Aiding him in that pursuit was Kitt, an artificially intelligent and nearly indestructible car.

Jonah Hill managed to pick up two Oscar nominations before his 30th birthday. It is a pretty impressive fete since the bulk of Hill’s early film work had been in outrageous comedies like “Superbad” and “21 Jump Street,” which seldom are recognized by Academy voters. He did take some serious roles in “Moneyball” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” which earned him those two nominations.
Hill started his career as a playwright. He wrote and performed a number of plays while he was attending The New School in New York City. Those plays led him to meeting the children of Dustin Hoffman who then got Hill an audition for a small role in “I Heart Huckabees.” That film lead him to associations with Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow, with whom he has worked a number of times. That led to work with Joel and Ethan Coen, Martin Scorsese and more.

Charles Melton is having his breakout moment in Todd Haynes‘ newest movie “May December,” which just released in theaters in the USA on November 17. Melton is best known for playing Reggie Mantle in the TV teen drama “Riverdale” but he’s now flexed his dramatic acting muscles in Haynes’ superb melodrama opposite Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.
Portman plays Elizabeth — an actress who visits a couple played by Melton (Joe) and Moore (Gracie). Elizabeth is doing research on the couple for a film based on their scandalous past — they previously struck up an affair when Joe was just 13 and Gracie was much older. Elizabeth’s visit brings up the whole ordeal again and there are so many deliciously dramatic moments littered throughout the lush film.
While the drama sears, the picture is also very, very funny. The comedy comes mostly from Portman and Moore, however, while Melton carries...

Whatever your answer is, how do you think that movie would stack up against a potential Men in Black and 21 Jump Street crossover? “It’s the ’80s, do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Regan!” That song may be an all-time classic Mystery Science Theater 3000 riff from the Gremlins rip-off Hobgoblins, but one might find themselves also singing that ditty more and more often when watching TV and movies.
Stranger Things, Totally Killer, It, and even parts of Loki’s second season take us back to the 1980s, filling the screen with neon clothes, Dungeons & Dragons references, and so much punk and synth-pop.
It’s easy to see why the ’80s would get attention in the past decade, as kids of that era have grown to be the adults with buying power (such as it is) and control over media franchises. However, ’80s nostalgia has become bankrupt even quicker than previous versions, precisely because of its thin and disinterested look at the target decade.

It's been nearly forty years, but people still remember "The A-Team." The action adventure series went on for five seasons, but stuck around in the public consciousness for much, much longer. People still remember the theme song, the cartoonish violence, the catchphrases. But although many viewers throughout the 2000s wanted a revival of the show, the TV series itself never came back.
Instead, we got a feature film in 2010 starring an updated A-Team, with the characters being veterans of the Iraq War instead of veterans of Vietnam. The film underperformed at the box office, however, and they never made a sequel. Unlike "21 Jump Street," a franchise where the later movies have now long-since overshadowed the TV show for most younger viewers, when people of all ages today think of "The A-Team," they're still almost certainly thinking of the show.
So what have the cast members been up to since...

If you followed indie film in the 90s, Vince Vaughn was at the center of a legendary tale. As the story goes, in order to get permission to use the theme from Jaws in the film Swingers, Doug Liman screened the film for Steven Spielberg’s approval. Not only did Stevie Boy allow them to use the scary shark tune but the legendary director knew he had to work with whoever was playing Trent Walker. And, he did just that when he cast Vince Vaughn in his Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World. Spielberg instantly knew that Vince Vaughn was superstar material and he was correctomundo. Over the last nearly 30 years, he has given us some of the best comedic performances mixed in with some bone chilling anti-heroes. But it seems in the past few years Vaughn has slowed down his output to focus on smaller roles in more meaningful projects.

Channing Tatum is one of the biggest heartthrobs in Hollywood. He's made us swoon by playing the hunky lead in romantic movies like "Dear John" and "The Vow" and also made us laugh with comedies like "21 Jump Street" and "Magic Mike." Still, we can't forget the movie that made us first fall for him: "Step Up," in which Tatum plays a hip-hop dancer named Tyler Gage opposite Jenna Dewan's Nora Clark. The pair's chemistry throughout the film is on fire, so it was no surprise they eventually took their romance off-screen.
Tatum and Dewan dated each other for three years before tying the knot in 2009. After seven years together, the stars welcomed their first child, a daughter named Everly Tatum, in 2013. However, in 2018, Tatum and Dewan announced their separation after nine years of marriage.

Richard Bachman's 1982 novel "The Running Man" is set in the far-off future of 2025 when corporate America is ruling the country, people are having trouble finding work, and appearing on salacious government-run game shows seems like a viable way to make money.
Contestants in "The Running Man" are deemed to be enemies of the state and are sentenced to execution. They are then set loose and hunted by government assassins, each one outfitted with a colorful gimmick. The contestants earn $100 for every hour they stay alive, with a $100 bonus for each cop they kill. If they live for 30 days, they win a billion dollars. The public takes bets on how long the contestants will survive before their inevitable slaughter.

It's possible that the 20th Century Fox-financed "X-Men" is the most important superhero movie ever made. There were hit folks-in-spandex flicks prior to Bryan Singer's 2000 blockbuster, but, even with movies like Richard Donner's "Superman" and Tim Burton's "Batman," you could sense a lack of traction. Studios didn't know how to franchise comic book movies back then because the executives didn't read or get comic books.
Singer's film changed this. Stephen Norrington's surprise 1998 hit "Blade" was the Marvel geek aperitif, but "X-Men" was, for Gen-x comic book readers, the realization of a lifelong dream. We never thought we'd get a big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' uncanny characters, but the time was right for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. The advances in computer-generated visual effects allowed Singer to make -- on a smallish budget given the film's tentpole ambitions -- a vibrant comic book movie...

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the A-list filmmaking team perhaps best known for their critically-acclaimed and blockbuster Spider-Man films — they won the best animated feature Oscar for 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which Lord co-wrote and both produced, and are in serious contention for it for 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which they co-wrote and co-produced — will sit down with yours truly at the Scad Savannah Film Festival to record a live episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast.
The conversation will take place at 10 a.m. Est on Thursday, Oct. 26, at Savannah’s Trustees Theater. A limited number of tickets are available for purchase at filmfest.scad.edu.
Two days earlier, on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 12 p.m. Est, the fest will screen Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse at the Trustees Theater, after which Lord and Miller will participate in a Q&a alongside the film’s three directors,...

In this age of IP-based films and TV, the idea seems to be that there's nothing that can't be remade, rebooted, or reimagined. With enough creativity and daring, everything from 21 Jump Street to Barbie dolls can find its way to becoming fresh and vital. And if a hit movie can be made from a children's toy, it should certainly be possible to make something worthwhile out of a revered play based on an award-winning book (the latter which inspired a beloved movie). And yet in Showtime's adaptation of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, the late director William Friedkin struggles mightily with pulling a story steeped in the realities of the 1950s into the 21st century.

It’s been almost a year since adidas announced that it had cut ties with Kayne West due to his antisemitic comments, and while you would think that the shoe company — founded by a literal Nazi — would be happy to see the controversy disappear in the rearview mirror as soon as possible, CEO Bjørn Gulden has actually managed to not only bring it up again, but to make the company look even worse with his comments.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Norwegian podcast In Good Company, Gulden seemed to make light of West’s offensive language, and suggested that the rapper “didn’t mean” what he had said. Going further, he highlighted the “very sad” loss of business that adidas experienced after ending the partnership.
“I think Kanye West is one of the most creative people in the world,” Gulden said (via The Guardian). “Both in music and what I call street culture.

John J. York, who has played Mac Scorpio on General Hospital for more than 30 years, took to social media today to explain why he has been on hiatus from the daytime drama.
“So last December, of ’22, I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, or Mds, and multiple smoldering myeloma, two blood and bone marrow disorders,” he said in a nearly two-minute video posted on X/Twitter (watch it below). “Over the past many months, I’ve had three bone marrow biopses, many chemo treatments — I have another one coming in a couple of weeks — and I’m closing in on a blood stem-cell transplant.”
York, who tweeted last week that he “will be taking a brief hiatus from the show in a few weeks,” also spoke directly to viewers about their possibly becoming a bone marrow donor for him or “thousands of others.” He directed folks to bethematch.org/matchformac.

“Strays” might be the most unexpectedly uproarious comedy of the year. And it’s even more satisfying because the words “R-rated dog comedy” probably don’t instill much hope.
And yet, here we are.
It starts to make more sense when you consider that the director behind the project is Josh Greenbaum, who directed 2021’s hilarious “Barb and Star Go to Vista del Mar”. And because it stars Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx as the voice of two dogs who are on a quest (along with their dog pals voiced by Randall Park and Ilsa Fisher) to bring violent revenge to Ferrell’s former owner (Will Forte).
As to how Greenbaum wound up with “Strays,” which is in theaters now, he was sent a pitch email with pretty much the logline above and a “Gif of a small dog humping a larger dog,” which shot it to the top of his reading list.
