Baltasar Kormakur's remake rules as Beauty and the Beast 3D and Joyful Noise struggle to boost lacklustre January takings
Icelandic actor-director Baltasar Kormákur rules the Us charts with Contraband (a remake of the 2008 film Reykjavik-Rotterdam, which he produced and starred in). It stars the multiplex-friendly duo Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale, even if the $24.1m estimated three-day weekend haul – the studios will report four-day estimates on Monday to accommodate the Martin Luther King Jr Day public holiday – is nothing to shout about, but January can be the cruellest month as the studios shake out their less spectacular and/or experimental fare. The opening weekend trailed the $33.5m number one debut of Sony's The Green Hornet exactly one year ago.
Disney's re-release of Beauty and the Beast in 3D arrived in second place on $18.5m. It will most likely carve out a solid theatrical run and is calculated to boost DVD sales.

According to today’s weekend box office estimates, Mark Wahlberg once again proved to be a popular action man with strong audience pull as Contraband earned an estimated $8.7 million in Friday earnings, propelling the film to an early Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend lead and an estimated take slightly above $25 million total. A remake of Iceland's official submission for the 2010 Academy Awards Foreign Language prize, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, the original film’s producer Baltasar Kormákur went on to direct the Hollywood remake starring Wahlberg as a former smuggler who accepts a job in order to protect his brother-in-law.

Ben Foster, Contraband According to Deadline.com, this four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend the North American box office could reach $165 million — or up about 4% compared to last year. Considering the disappointing returns in late 2011, a modest increase is good news indeed for the jittery Hollywood studios. Helping things out are the Mark Wahlberg crime thriller Contraband, which earned an estimated $9 million on Friday and may reach $30 million by Monday evening. Box Office Mojo was expecting the film to bring in only $18.5 million. Anyhow, if those early estimates are correct, that's a solid start for a movie that reportedly cost $25 million (not including marketing/distribution expenses). A remake of Óskar Jónasson's 2008 Icelandic hit Reykjavik-Rotterdam, Contraband was directed by Baltasar Kormákur, the original film's star-producer. In addition to Wahlberg Contraband features Kate Beckinsale, Giovanni Ribisi, Diego Luna, Ben Foster, Lukas Haas, Caleb Landry Jones, and J.K. Simmons. Disney's 3D-ification of...

Judging by the advertisements for Contraband, I expected to watch a half-baked actioner with big beats and little brains (let alone heart). Instead the film, a remake of the Icelandic Reykjavik-Rotterdam and with a cast member as director, is a more than capable action picture, filled with fun small moments and a tight script that whisks us from the unmistakable charm of New Olreans onto the high-seas and into the high stakes world of illegal contraband.
Chris Farraday (a fully-engaged Mark Wahlberg) was one of the best runners of contraband in the delta, a fact reiterated more than a few times in the opening scene at a former crew member (Lukas Hass)’s wedding. But now he’s just a regular Joe, living with his wife Kate (Kate Beckinsale) and his two kids, setting up security systems to keep people like himself out of homes. While Chris is out of the game,...

Lately we've seen Mark Wahlberg exercising his comedy chops in The Other Guys and strapping on the heavyweight drama for The Fighter. But it's back to x-rated action for Contraband, the theatrical trailer for which has just arrived. It's looking like promising crash-bang stuff, with a couple of good one-liners and a nice sense of escalation as some straightforward crook-ery spirals out of control into all-out warfare. The story revolves around a former smuggler turned security guard, lured back to the wrong side of the law when he finds himself in tricky financial straits: a plan that goes south when violent drug dealers get involved and his family is threatened. And if that sounds familiar, it's because Contraband is a remake of Reykjavik-Rotterdam, which won several Edda awards in its native Iceland, and was the country's submission in 2008 for the Best Foreign-Language Oscar, although it didn't end up bagging a nomination.

Contraband Trailer. Baltasar Kormákur‘s Contraband (2012) movie trailer stars Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, and Lukas Haas. Contraband‘s plot synopsis: “Chris Farraday long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy, botches a deal for his ruthless boss, he’s forced back into doing what he does best — running contraband — to settle the debt.”
This not the first time this storyline has appeared on screen. “This is a remake of the 2008 film Reykjavik-Rotterdam, which Baltasar Kormákur also appeared in, featuring a new screenplay adaptation by Aaron Guzikowski.” The Contraband plot reminds me of the remake for Gone in Sixty Seconds where a criminal comes out retirement after another criminal related to them bungles a crime and will be killed.
Contraband also stars J.K. Simmons, Lukas Haas, Diego Luna, Robert Wahlberg, Monica Acosta, Jaqueline Fleming, Michael Beasley, Nedal Yousef, and Kirk Bovill.

Don’t mess with Mark Wahlberg. That’s what I got from this debut trailer for Wahlberg and director Baltasar Kormákur’s “Contraband”. That, and Kate Beckinsale playing a damsel-in-distress housewife just feels … wrong. The film is the Hollywood debut of Kormákur, based on the 2008 film “Reykjavik-Rotterdam”, which Kormákur not only co-produced, but also starred in as the main character. So basically he’s now directing Wahlberg in the role he originated. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Anyways, the first trailer for “Contraband” and new images from the movie below. Here's the trailer for Contraband, the remake of smuggling thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam starring Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi. Wahlberg plays a guy who escaped his former criminal life, but is drawn back into smuggling when his wife's brother (Caleb Landry Jones, from X-Men: First Class) gets into trouble. Baltasar Kormákur, an actor and producer on the original film, directs this version. Contraband looks just a bit more visually polished than the original, and sadly like a pretty routine thriller. Check out the trailer below. Despite the familiarity of the setup, there's always the promise of Ben Foster being a bit weird and unpredictable, and the simple eye-candy of Wahlberg and Beckinsale. "You will never find that money!" Universal has debuted the official trailer for Contraband, a new action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg that yes, is actually a remake of another foreign film, from Iceland, called Reykjavik-Rotterdam. The cast includes Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, Lukas Haas and J.K. Simmons. It's one of those crime movies about a former criminal-turned-good who has to do one more job to save his brother, who botched up another job. Of course, everything goes wrong and it all gets crazy, but the last half of the trailer actually looks pretty damn cool. Otherwise, I'm not so sure. Fire it up! Now that Award season is over, Mark Wahlberg is done collecting accolades for The Fighter, the biopic he produced and starred in as welterweight fighter "Irish" Micky Ward, and is back to work on Contraband, the remake of the 2008 Icelandic thriller Reykjavík-Rotterdam. The movie follows Wahlberg as a former smuggles who may return to his criminal ways after an associate makes him a lucrative offer. Set photos were revealed in early February, which Wahlberg told EW shows him out of fighting shape.
Well, I certainly took some time off and enjoyed the fruits of my labor and stuffed my face, drank a lot of wine, and then had a lot of people say, "Dude, you don’t look the same." [When I first] showed up on the set of this movie, they were like, "Dude, you can’t show up to work looking like that. They’re expecting you to be in shape...

Ben Foster, Giovanni Ribisi, and Caleb Landry Jones have all joined Contraband, a thriller set up at Universal Pictures starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale.
The movie features Wahlberg as a retired smuggler named Chris, who is pulled back into the illegal business for the typical “one last job,” and becomes embroiled in a dangerous mission to avoid customs and rescue his family. Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in and produced the Icelandic original Reykjavik-Rotterdam, is directing the American remake in early 2011 for a release on March 16, 2012.
According to Variety, Jones will play Wahlberg’s brother-in-law, Andy, who botches a drug deal and lands himself in hot water with some shady, unforgiving types. If it sounds like Gone in 60 Seconds with shipments instead of cars, that’s because it is essentially the same plot. Details are still sketchy, but Latino Review are reporting that Kate Beckinsale has come aboard Contraband, the newly-monikered remake of Reykjavik-Rotterdam.The project was announced a year or so ago, with Mark Wahlberg producing and Baltasar Kormákur, who starred in the original, replacing Óskar Jónasson as director. The story revolves around a former smuggler turned security guard, lured back to the wrong side of the law when he finds himself in tricky financial straits: a plan that goes south when violent drug dealers get involved and his family is threatened. The original film won several Edda awards in its native Iceland, and was the country's submission in 2008 for the Best Foreign-Language Oscar, although it didn't end up bagging a nomination. The Working Title remake (with the name-change prompted by a shift in location, like what we predicted) has been adapted from the original by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners). Working Title has decided to do a remake of this year's Icelandic Oscar submission, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, with Mark Wahlberg onboard to topline the thriller.
The script will be penned by The Prisoners scribe Aaron Guzikowski, while Stephen Levinson and the Working Title duo Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are onboard as producers.
The original story is about a former freight ship worker who, after being fired for smuggling booze between Reykyavik and Rotterdam, is stuck as a security guard, until an old friend convinces him to join up for one last job. According to the filmmakers, the remake will likely be relocated to other places.
Wahlberg has been busy this last year: while continuing his role as executive producer with Levinson on Entourage, he is starring in numerous upcoming releases; Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones, Shawn Levy's Date Night, David O. Russell's The Fighter and Adam McKay's The Other Guys.

Mark Walhberg has signed up to star in a remake of an Icelandic film we haven't even seen yet, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, a thriller that's Iceland's submission to this year's Oscars. The remake's expected to relocate the action elsewhere, so be prepared for a possible title change there when this one becomes geographically misleading. The film centres on Christopher (well, Kristófer really), a former alcohol smuggler (what with the price of booze in Iceland being crazy-high) turned security guard who is lured back into the business by a dubious friend after he gets himself into a financial pickle. But of course it's not that easy: cue involvement with a violent drug dealer and danger for Christopher's family as well as himself. The original was directed by Óskar Jónasson, but this version will be directed by the star of the original, Baltasar Kormákur. Prisoners writer Aaron Guzikowski is on scripting duties, and will...

Berlin -- Baltasar Kormakur's "White Night Wedding," a matrimonial comedy loosely based on Chekhov's "Ivanov," was the big winner at Iceland's Edda Awards, the country's top film honors, taking seven trophies, including best picture.
"White Night Wedding" also is Iceland's official candidate in the foreign-language Oscar race.
The other multiple winner at Tuesday night's Edda ceremony was Oskar Jonasson's thriller "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," which earned five awards, including best director.
Kormakur plays the lead in "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," further evidence that this young multihyphenate, who had his breakthrough with 2000's "Reykjavik 101," is quickly becoming Iceland's one-man film industry.
