Season One Review

I'm a fan of Ellie White and Tash Demetriou from their performances in other things, and I knew from Adam Buxton's podcast that they were a comedy duo and that this series was on the horizon. Whilst I can't claim that it had me in stiches of laughter, I thought it was well observed at times, but mild amusement was my more common feelings.

Sketch comedy show written and performed by Ellie White and Natasia Demetriou. Characters include the ever-grifting Internet Nail's team and their early 90's production values, chef bantz lads the Brothers Pomodoro and middle-class mums with a youtube channel.

As I say, generally love everyone involved in this. Simon Bird directs the episodes and appears in one sketch. Family and friends are roped in for the Nail salon sketches (the only one that appears in every episode). Jamie Demetriou and Daniel Barker appear in those too. Across the season Harry Trevaldwyn, Katy Wix, Matt Berry, Phil Dunning, Kiell Smith-Bynoe, Dustin Demri-Burns and David Morrissey all appear.

There is some brilliant observed stuff in here, particular in the dissection of various tropes in straight to camera VT types and the Vox pop style street interviews. Those though, along with the middle-class mums sketches are, in my opinion, lacking the jokes to back up those observations. The brothers Pomodoro is better, and posho cooking lads are an ever-green target. Of the regulars though, the salon group is probably the strongest. Like all sketch comedy, the one off's can be a mixed bag - my absolute favourite was probably the strangest one they did about a creepy pair running a candle making course - I did laugh out loud at that one.

I can accept that not everyone is going to be as forgiving of comedy that doesn't make you laugh as I am here, with my built in "What we Do in the Shadows" / "Stath lets Flats" appreciation but I hope that the positive reviews, rather than the lack of publicity, win out and they are given the opportunity to make more.
