Everybody has a hero, but it isn't just the flashy weapons or what color hat they wear, it's about what they stand for and how they overcome it that wins admiration. George and Elroy get a good sound lesson in such characteristics in tonight's episode. As we open, we find George Jetson attempting to have a peaceful evening at home. This doesn't last however when Elroy tunes into his favorite show, The Spy From Space with Roger Mars, played at full volume. George complains that the show is too violent, though extremely tame by today's standards and instead coaxes him away from the television so he can read to him from one of those old fashion, out-dated book gizmos. This book was about the greatest heroes of the west, talking of real heroes and not like the phonies on TV. One hero in particular being their very own ancestor, George Jetwest...yes, George Jetwest. He fought against the vile, rough and tumble outlaw Bad Bart. Why did they fight? Because Bart wore a black hat and Jetwest had a white hat, so they had to fight. That is seriously the explanation George gives, only later we discover they were fighting over marked cards. Unfortunately, his small tale of Great Great Great Great Grandfather Jetwest didn't leave much of an impression on Elroy, as he went right back to playing Space Spy. One disintegrated news paper later, George decrees they would all go on a trip, whether they like it or not, to the old west to learn just how rough their ancestors had it. So after they all get outfitted in western duds, the family sets out.
En route, they'll pulled over, thanks to Rosie. Before departing, the cops warns them of Bad Bart Blaster IV lurking around. Well, it's not like they're going to cross paths him later or anything. So they arrive at Bluff Point where the old fight took place, which to George's dismay, was now a space cadet camp...obviously he didn't read the sign before they got out of the car. So after Judy hopelessly flirts with one of the cadets, they head off in search of another ghost town, but alas they find nothing but a movie studio. Just as George is about to give up, who should come to his side but Roger Mars. After hearing of his plight, Mars agrees to help by staging an old west show, and play the part of Bad Bart to George's Jetwest. Sounds like the perfect plan. What could go wrong? How about this: the real Bad Bart Blaster IV shows up where Mars planned to meet George at the saloon, and right away recognizes George as the ancestor of Jetwest, and decrees they have a score to settle. Not being able to distinguish the real Bad Bart from the fake one, George accepts the duel...at high moon, which is now. And then comes my favorite line from George: "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I shoulda won three space Oscar awards". So they give you 3 Oscars for one line in the future? Wow. So anyway, the big doofus heads to the fight, and when he finds Roger Mars bound and gagged, he finally realized the gravity of the situation. So it looks like this is it for George. A battle to the death. Well, he went this far to try and prove himself to his family, might as well go out on top. Relax, he doesn't die. It turns out Bart's dog is Astro's cousin, so they tackle Bart, forcing him to throw the fight. Elroy acknowledges George as his new hero, Judy flirts with Mars, and George shoots himself in the foot.
All in all, I have to say this one was pretty good. It was a fun episode with an interesting story, a decent plot, and a nice change from the norm. It also makes a nice statement how in such a modernized world, we forget how our ancestors of yesteryear lived. But even though the time and circumstances were different, people still fight over stupid things today as they did back then. So come hear the heroic tales of George Jetwest, which sounds more like an airline, and check out "High Moon".
