LOTS OF 10/10 REVIEWS, IS THIS FILM A FUTURE CLASSIC?
freqeteq19 April 2022
To answer my question in the title of this review, no, no it isn't.

One of my fellow reviewers who scored this film an 8/10 tried to spell the word 'cinematography' and failed spectacularly at it, which kind of works as an analogy for this film. It tries, but it fails, hard.

I'm not going to say much more about it, watch the trailer and that's the quality of movie you're getting. A poorly written and shot budget adventure with some bad acting thrown in for good measure. I was never engaged in the story or characters, nothing felt real.

Good on them for having a go, I respect their attempt, I'm only writing this review because I hate fake misleading reviews on indie films and someone needs to tell the truth.

Interesting Plot - but that's as far as it goes...
joeg997119 April 2022
I don't want to be negative on this - but there are times when you really need to be, and this unfortunately is one of those times!

I would have better entertainment sitting outside, counting how many ants I see crawl past me, looking for food, finding their way back home, catching up with other ants and just chilling at the corner of blade and grass avenue.

Sorry, but it's a No from me!

A good opportunity wasted
millordrak20 April 2022
This could have been good movie but it looks like one of those cheezy Hallmark or christian movies. The constant music was annoying & it looks amateur. They wasted a good opportunity to make a 'serious' movie about the electric grid going down & how people would have to cope with it.

Another pumped up 10
clight7719 April 2022
Another pumped up 10 that is really a 2.

It is a dead giveaway when there are so many 10's you just know it is really a bad movie.

In most cases these days I won't even watch these inflated up voted - by participants in the making of the movie.

There is not a movie in the world that rates a 10.

The reviewers giving it 10/10 joined IMDB the same time - suspish
mumooshka20 April 2022
Obviously those who have a stake in the film wanted to prop the film up but hey, if you're going to do that, at least make the scoring realistic.

Best to take an average of the real reviews.. it was dull but the movie did have a good premise. A lot more could be done but I feel there wasn't enough professionalism behind the production.

A simple and silly story pretending to be something big
havore20 April 2022
Tricked to watch it by the high imdb rating 9, now falling to 4.6.

It is a story about love and family reunion of a teenage girl. Don't it to be a diaster or consipiracy movie.

Student film at best
serafincanchola20 April 2022
There were few good scenes in the beginning then it went downhill, horrible acting, I kept hating myself as I allowed my eyes to watch it, perhaps I was looking for something redeeming or hope but no it did not happen.

mmdeleeuw20 April 2022
Movie is unbelievably amateuristic. Script is right out of a Donald Duck. Acting veeeeery poor. And ALWAYS that American flag. WHY!!!!. The 10/10 reviews clearly are as fake as can be.

I don't understand who really did invest his or her good money in this load of sh....

No coma??????
tealef18 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get it. I was waiting for two hours for this broad to fall into a coma but it never happened. Instead she gets a free (sponsored) Jeep Wrangler and goes on a cool road trip! It's one of the happiest films I've ever seen! Disappointed.

Beautifully shot film!
roblesharhold16 May 2022
I see some of these reviews on here and they actually make me a little angry. This is an Indie film, and it towers above a lot of Indie films out there. The camera work, the drone shots, and the cinematography is beautiful! The sound engineering is almost flawless and as the film progresses, the film gets better and better and better. Sometimes, when you make a film that looks so professional, people mistake you for a studio film. Sometimes, people just don't get it. 8/10 for me, I can see the quality in the film!

Teenager girls going for a joy ride and ending up in terrorist activities
clanciai11 July 2022
It's like an ordinary but very modern teenager adventure. The leading girl is only 16 but works as a car mechanic and knows well how to drive a car, especially without a licence. She uses that car all through the film without a driver's licence, and no one ever checks her. She goes off with a friend of hers, who is scared out of her wits for anything she encounters out in the wilderness of nature, and all she wants is to get out of there, while her brother joins the ride uninvited, so they are sure asking for trouble and get enough of it for a lifetime, making some love on the way and discovering the truth of some weird ancestry, meeting both her father and grandfather, who is an AA sponsor. Well, it's an ordinary complicated family affair all twisted up and gradually getting all blown up. The main theme of the film is some problems with some local power cuts, that seem to spread across the continent, and these poor innocent youths just happen to get at the heart of a nasty sabotage plot to scare the s*** out of the whole country. Will it succeed? Well, it certainly doesn't scare the s*** out of the audience, who will rather yawn until the bitter but eagerly expected end. There is some great nature scenery out of Ohio (not West Virginia although the action is supposed to take place there,) and the music is decorative enough, but the script suffers from a very poor dialog, like in most American films mainly using.common vulgar profanity words to fill up the dialog. Recommended only for teenagers.

Pathetic
McBaraya17 June 2022
The only one I loved was the camera man.

He was the only one did his job. Everything else is just pathetic. I don't know why I did that to my self.

I have nothing more to say, I'm just adding more text because the comment needs to be more than 150 character.

Oh my Gosh!!!
jbmflutist28 June 2022
I watched the whole movie! I deserve an Oscar! This could have been a good movie of warning value, but it was predictable, weird sulky attitudes, over acting, and really bad choice of music! The music seemed more for a transformer movie or military film for the Fourth of July! If you have nothing to do, watch it, but expect characters without manners, and convenience of plot.

Kinda Interesting
gab-6759927 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was SO upset about half way through because I THOUGHT this movie would be better than the beginning suggested it would be. I was right, at times this one drifted into the left driving lane, metaphorically speaking. Do not be fooled this is a LOW BUGET movie. The acting was good for them being new comers. I wanted to know what would happen next, but was I on the end of my seat , NO. I love Indy films and whole hearty believe this director could do magic with a better budget. Was this a 10 star movie, heck no. I enjoyed about half of it and if I was feeling generous it would be a 6. But that is just my honest review because I have seen worse Indy films and this was just ok. I could not believe T. J's luck, first her step-dad is a perv then her REAL one as well. Not sure why the "Old man" didn't bring his guns to stop them at the end, but whatever.

A peak in our future
ninoumiricano2 October 2022
I think a lot of people can relate, in the not so distance future this maybe a reality form some, and some may pursue this type of retaliation against the worlds population. A human being can only be pushed so far, then as some used to say they go Postal. The film keep you engaged on guessing the next scene. If only all the indie film makers would put their heart in their work like this team versus looking for the dollar and cents portion of it, we'd be in for some good entertainment. Cast was good, crew seem to have everyone hit their marks, as well as good cinematography. Can't wait for the follow up fli.

I took a chance on this one. . .
tooterbears7 March 2023
I took a chance on The Other Side of Darkness(2022) based on the polarity of votes from 10-1. The concept of the movie is one many have contemplated from an accidental grid outage to an attack on the grid from a nefarious source. I was pleasantly surprised by the acting from all involved. The music and scenery is worth watching the movie--especially the music. This is definitely an "Indie" movie but in my opinion one of the better ones given the young actors.

I will say the movie would have been much, much better without all the profanity. Profanity just fills in where the writers cannot think of anything to say. The plight of many in foster care is a secondary theme. Again, worth watching but not one to watch more than once.

Strong indie feature
roblivings25 April 2022
This film is ambitious beyond its budget limitations, but it pulls off what it is trying to do, sucking you into the story and caring about the characters. The harsh reviews here come from people expecting a 100mil film. This film really is a solid feat.

Interesting
lee_yang_9 March 2023
This film was interesting - the slow burn storyline leads up to a payoff for both the plot and the characters. Nice cinematography and editing make for an intriguing opening and the use of aerial shots furthered the atmosphere of the story.

The multiple storylines make for an engaging view, but you must carefully follow the nuanced journeys of the characters in order to benefit from everything that the film has to offer.

In conclusion, "The Other Side of Darkness" does a good job at building subtle tension amidst a high concept plot. If you're looking for something that follows a format that is relatively different from other indie films, give it a watch.

Ambitious Storyline
catheraneskillen7 March 2023
Filmmaker Adam Deierling has made an ambitious film with many twists and turns which in the beginning looks to be a coming-of-age story, morphs into a road-adventure film, and then with some hints along the way turns into a thriller.

Newcomer Maggie Callahan shows great promise. She comports herself well as a girl who is ignorant of her background but, nonetheless, is spirited and has an inner strength.

Great camerawork here. The shots of the countryside were breathtaking. One of the great things about cinema is it gives the audience an opportunity to view other parts of our world that we might, otherwise, never see.

Wonderful and Exciting Coming of Age Story
rmiltner-922995 February 2022
Excellent acting by Maggie Callahan who shines in this road trip coming of age story. The cinematography, soundtrack, and songs make Deierling's movie about unlocking the past and discovering lost family a feel-good and satisfying movie.

Good effort for Indy film
monsterman195421 September 2022
After watching Adam Deierling's film, I feel he could be on the way to making a high class- action-packed thriller or adventure film .

His camera work is dazzling at times and does give you feel that you are there. Now that's a good point.

As far as acting goes, seems there are some newcomers but hey, they gave it their best and even though some scenes came off as wooden, it kept my attention.

I mean you could tell Adam had his heart and soul into this production.

The musical soundtrack did uplift the film. Although at times it seemed over done in spots, but hey, I feel music is a very important part of character development. (The way Roger Corman used Les Baxter in his Vincent Price - Poe series of films in the 1960's) Overall a good attempt and I wish Adam good luck in his future productions .

What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?
andrewjrihn6 February 2022
Strong acting from a young cast leads this tightly-wound indie flick from character study to action adventure. Crisp dialog grounds the characters in Ohio and West Virginia authenticity and sharp cinematography highlights the beauty of this rural region.

Worth watching
annelauremilleville3 March 2023
"The Other Side of Darkness" offers an original story, with several smaller stories within the main story. The dynamic between the 3 main characters (Patrick, TJ and Hannah) is refreshing. It's a perfect teenage adventure movie that takes us where we didn't expect to go! In spite of a lengthy ending with bewildering twists, this independent film is worth seeing. Special mention to the director/editor Adam Deierling, who did a great job of varying the shots, especially during the road trips. This combination coupled with the music brought a real visual dynamic to the story.

The actors, particularly Maggie Callahan, remain touching until the end, and Scott C. Davis' interpretation of this ambiguous character (at least at the beginning) seemed convincing to me.
