The worlds of the big screens and the small screens are merging for documentaries — and with that comes a debate over the Academy paying these works attention. Where is the line drawn between those that qualify for an Emmy, an Oscar, or both? Let’s take a look at the 89th Academy Awards race and what works that will compete for glory on February 26, 2017.
Our own Scott Feinberg has evaluated the landscape after the New York Film Festival wrapped up and, in the projected shortlist in the best documentary feature category, there are six films that are blurring the line between the mediums: O.J.: Made in America (Espn), Gleason (Amazon), Weiner (Showtime), 13th (Netflix), Miss Sharon Jones! (Starz), and The Ivory Game (Netflix). There are others, in the possibilities and long shots column, that follow suit.

By the time Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made In America” aired on Espn in June, receiving near-universal acclaim from critics, Espn Films—which produced the documentary as part of the network’s popular “30 for 30” series—was already angling for attention from an Academy that, on the face of it, has nothing to do with TV. With one-week qualifying engagements at New York’s Cinema Village and Los Angeles’ Laemmle Monica Film Center, the exhaustive five-part portrait of O.J. Simpson’s life and times entered the campaign for Oscar.
It’s not alone. Of the eight other films Indiewire identifies as frontrunners in the race for Best Documentary Feature besides “O.J.: Made in America,” several have prominent connections to TV networks or streaming services: “Command and Control” (PBS); “Gleason” (Amazon); “Into the Inferno” (Netflix); “The Music of Strangers” (HBO); “Weiner” (Showtime); and “Zero Days” (Showtime). This year’s Oscar race could make history with two possible best picture nominees directed by women — Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. If both women are nominated for best director, that would also be a historical moment. But though these accomplishments in the narrative field are possible, more women directors are breaking into the documentary categories. Four of the 15 shortlisted documentaries feature women at the helm: Jennifer Grausman (co-directed with Sam Cullman and Mark Becker) with Art and Craft, Tia Lessin (co-directed with Carl Deal) with Citizen Koch, Laura Poitras with Citizenfour and Rory Kennedy with Last Days in Vietnam. Additionally, three of the eight shortlisted documentary shorts feature female directors: Ellen Goosenberg Kent with Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1, Aneta Kopacz with Joanna and Lucy Walker with The Lion’s Mouth Opens. Director Lauren Poitras traveled to Hong Kong in 2013 with journalist Glenn Greenwald to meet with Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor known for revealing information about the Nsa’s massive surveillance efforts, and what she filmed while meeting with Snowden resulted in Citizenfour.
The documentary premiered at the New York Film Fest and was met with a standing ovation and high praise. The film made the Academy’s documentary feature shortlist and could land a nomination at the 87th Academy Awards.
The film could join these ten Oscar-nominated documentaries that question American government’s military and/or political conduct (in chronological order):
The Panama Deception (1991)
Barbara Trent’s documentary offers a critical look back on the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, which resulted in the ousting of General Manuel Noriega, and the deceptive reasons for U.S. involvement. The documentary also captures biased media coverage and suppressed information.

Ben Bradlee movies: From 'All the President's Men' to 'Born Yesterday' (photo: Jason Robards as 'The Washington Post' executive editor Ben Bradlee in 'All the President's Men') Former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee aka Benjamin C. Bradlee, best known for his key role in the Watergate scandal that destroyed the Richard Nixon presidency, and who was later played by Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Jason Robards in Alan J. Pakula's film version of All the President's Men, died of "natural causes" last October 21, 2014, at his home in Washington, D.C. Bradlee, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, was 93. The Washington Post of the 21st century may look increasingly like a more pedantic version of the Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid New York Post, but things weren't always like that. Back in the days when the American media — at least some of the time — actually bothered reporting news...

Directed by Rory Kennedy, Last Days in Vietnam focuses on the final weeks of the Vietnam War in April 1975 and the Americans who tried to rescue as many South Vietnamese refugees that they could — against White House orders — as the North Vietnamese Army approached Saigon. Kennedy has never been nominated for an Oscar, but her 2012 documentary Ethel, about Ethel Kennedy (Rory’s mother), was nominated for five Emmys. Last Days in Vietnam, which premiered at Sundance, could garner Kennedy her first Oscar nom.
Historically, Vietnam documentaries have done well in the documentary category at the Oscars, and that may be due to many Academy members having come of age during the war. Here are 11 Vietnam documentaries that have been nominated for best documentary (in chronological order):

First Run Features announced today its acquisition of the award-winning documentary The Pruitt-igoe Myth from filmmaker Chad Freidrichs. First Run is planning a March 2012 theatrical launch with VOD, home video and television to follow. The deal was negotiated by Film Sales Company head Andrew Herwitz and First Run’s Marc Mauceri.
The Pruitt-igoe Myth tells the story of the transformation of the American city in the decades after World War II, through the lens of the infamous Pruitt-Igoe housing development and the St. Louis residents who called it home.
It began as a housing marvel. Built in 1956, Pruitt-Igoe was heralded as the model public housing project of the future, “the poor man’s penthouse.” Two decades later, it ended in rubble – its razing an iconic event that the architectual theorist Charles Jenks famously called the death of modernism. The footage and images of its implosion have helped to perpetuate a myth of failure,...

Sarah Palin is The Undefeated Despite reports to the contrary, the Sarah Palin movie The Undefeated did not play to empty houses on its first weekend out in North America. According to Box Office Mojo, The Undefeated brought in $65,132 at 10 locations over the weekend of July 15-17; the Stephen K. Bannon-directed film's per-theater average was a so-so $6,513. So, "so-so" may not mean "packed houses" or "boffo" (in icky Variety slang), but non-existent patrons bring in no revenue. The claim that The Undefeated was playing to empty houses became "fact" following a report by The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf, who described his experience sitting mostly alone at a midnight screening of the Sarah Palin documentary in — mostly Republican — Orange County, right behind the Orange Curtain southeast of Los Angeles. But clearly, paying customers were around at other The Undefeated screenings in Orange County, Houston, Phoenix, Indianapolis, and elsewhere. Perhaps far-right Republicans go to bed early?...

Judith Ehrlich, who made film on Pentagon Papers' Daniel Ellsberg, criticises indictment of Bradley Manning over WikiLeaks
Barack Obama has the worst record of any Us president when it comes to dealing with whistleblowers, according to the Oscar-nominated director of a documentary about the man who leaked the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s.
Judith Ehrlich, whose 2009 film The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers explored the 70s leak of Us government documents on the Vietnam war, said Obama had indicted five alleged whistleblowers since taking office, making him the "worst president in terms of his record on whistleblowing".
One of these is Bradley Manning, the Us army private who is in detention, accused of leaking 250,000 diplomatic cables to the website WikiLeaks. The WikiLeaks exposé, published in late 2010 in partnership with papers including the Guardian and New York Times, has been compared to the Pentagon Papers in terms of its scale.

The Hamptons International Film Festival had scheduled the screening of the Oscar nominated documentary, The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, the second in its SummerDocs Series in East Hampton for Saturday August 7, well before Wikileaks made Daniel Ellsberg a hot item-again, 40 years after he leaked The Pentagon Papers. Now, swamped with media requests, Ellsberg will fly east from his home in Oakland, California to attend the Guild Hall screening and join actor Alec Baldwin and Carl Bernstein, the journalist with whom Bob Woodward broke Watergate, for a conversation that is sure to engage his anti-war passions, even though, as he asserted in a recent phone interview, "I am not a pacifist. Self defense is justified." Q: Do you think the comparison between The Pentagon Papers and Wikileaks is apt? The comparison is inevitable....

A fascinating theme emerges early on in Judith Ehrlich and Rick Goldsmith's Oscar-nominated documentary The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers: that the same circular thinking and one-upsmanship games inevitably will overtake hyper-insulated circles once their belief system come under fire. Whether they be grassroots activist groups, major media companies, the Department of Defense or the White House -- the wheels come off with striking similarity and lead to some fantastic collapses.

If you're looking for a movie to buy or rent this week, for once there are plenty of options including Kevin Smith's Cop Out, The Losers starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Zoe Saldana, and The Runaways starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Also, you definitely don't want to pass up on the action and the drama of Jersey Shore: Season One Uncensored or the educational value of Peter Serafinowicz's mock science show Look Around You. What will you be picking up this week? Cop Out [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) The Losers [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) The Runaways [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) Mother [7] (+ Blu-ray [8]) Barking Dogs Never Bite [9] The Bong Joon-Ho...

Cop Out: "If there's one thing that Cop Out has in common with other Kevin Smith movies, it's that it's not about the plot. It's about the exchanges, here between Willis and Morgan's characters. Unfortunately, the chemistry is flat, and the humor is non-existent. It's a series of the sort of jokes you'd expect to hear in a Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer movie -- dick and fart jokes without an ounce of subtext to them. At one point, Tracy Morgan goes on a four-minute ad-libbed diatribe about his bowel movements, which ranks as one of the most painful scenes I've ever had to suffer through." -- Dustin Rowles
The Runaways: "About as rock and roll as those late-night infomercials pitching metal compilations featuring Winger and Queensryche, The Runaways offers little insight into the influential all-girl rock band, but rather an excuse for the leads to try to shimmy off their Twilight bonds.

Black Narcissus (Criterion Collection) I just wrote up my review of both this and The Red Shoes, both of which are being released today from Criterion on DVD and Blu-ray. In my opinion, Black Narcissus is a must own. This is a great movie and a great way to introduce yourself to the work of Powell, Pressburger and Cardiff. On top of everything there is to discuss about this film from performances, to direction, to camerawork, to color, to visual effects, it's a film that has it all. You can read my full review right here. A Town Called Panic I almost made this the top pick of the week, but it just wouldn't have been right and even though I am not one of the most ardent fans of The Red Shoes it still feels wrong to place...

it's not Tuesday but it's time for a Top Ten anyway... as this is yesterday's news already!
AMPAS used to hide their membership roster like the vote tallies but in the information age, they've opened up. Now we get to see the whole list of new invitees each year. I wonder how they keep they're membership around 6,000 given how many people they invite annual. Maybe enough people reject the offer, stop paying their dues, or pass from this mortal coil each year to balance it out?
You can read the full list of recipients at Indiewire, but as is the Film Experience tradition, we like to pinpoint the newest (potential) members whose future ballots we'd most like to see. So let's have at it.

HollywoodNews.com: Adam Sandler is gearing up for the release of his new film, “Grown Ups,” and has just been announced as one of 135 artists selected to join the Academy.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 135 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2010 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.
“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them.”
The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held...

How much trust do we put in our elected officials? How far-reaching, how blatant are the lies that the government tells us, reaching all the way up the ladder to the big man in the oval office? Daniel Ellsberg discovered the answers to these questions first hand during his time working with the Rand Corporation in collaboration with Robert McNamara and the U.S. government during the Vietnam War. This was a devastating revelation that ultimately shifted his views and his life, resulting in a shift in the interpretation of the First Amendment in relation to the publication of classified documents in the media.
Is this all a bit much to take in? Well, The Most Dangerous Man In America: Daniel Ellsberg And The Pentagon Papers is the kind of documentary that can present enough information to make your head spin, or to inform and awaken audiences to the underbelly of American history.

Chicago – Is the Iraq war merely a continuation of Vietnam? In both cases, were we led to war under false pretenses, with the assurance that we were preserving democracy? Viewers on both sides of the political spectrum will be arguing about these questions long after this documentary, and the current war itself, is over.
Without even mentioning Iraq, this film indirectly highlights several provocative and unsettling similarities between the past and current wars, proving that history tends to repeat itself more often than one would care to admit. “The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers” is the deservedly Oscar-nominated portrait of the outraged military analyst who leaked a top-secret Pentagon study to the press. Younger viewers less familiar with Ellsberg will be riveted by his story, while older viewers will be startled by the extent to which he evolved, and the risks he undertook,...

There were very few surprises last night as The Hurt Locker picked up six Oscars including “Best Picture.” Despite the Academy’s expansion of the category, the Iraq war film had become a forgone conclusion after sweeping most of the ceremonies leading up to Sunday. It’s the lowest grossing movie to ever win the top prize and do so without the usual expensive advertising campaign.
In another first, Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman in the ceremony’s 82 year history to win “Best Director,” beating out strong competition from her ex-husband James Cameron and more. The screenwriter Mark Boal won for its “Best Original Screenplay.”
Jeff Bridges was finally recognized after his fifth nomination and promptly set the record for saying “man” in an acceptance speech. Sandra Bullock had a sense of humor about herself in holding the “Best Actress” Oscar just one night after taking home the Razzie...

Oscar winners 2010 list is here.
We already wrote about possible winners and competition between- James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, so we can say that we’re not at all surprised that this was Kathryn Bigelow’s night.
The Hurt Locker won 6 Oscars, including honour for Best Movie and Best Director.
So, Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director.
On the other hand, the movie that still sits on the top of box office, James Cameron’s Avatar definetely had a bad luck. The movie won only 3 golden statues in technical categories – Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
We can’t help but think that this show really seemed like Bigelow’s sweet revenge.
Sandra Bullock was named best actress for The Blind Side after she proudly attended Razzie 2010 event and took completely different award.
“Did I really earn this, or did I just wear you all down?...

Shortly after another bomb exploded when seconds after she walked off stage Tom Hanks announced that The Hurt Locker was also the Best Picture, beating out the favorite Avatar and team Cameron. The Iraq War drama earned six total Oscar wins at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing. James Cameron's Avatar, on the other hand, won only for visual effects, art direction and cinematography. All of the acting categories went off as expected, with Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock winning Best Actor and Best Actress, while Christoph Waltz and Mo'Nique won the supporting trophies. So, this evening I headed to a rather exclusive Oscar party in central London courtesy of Grey Goose and watched the stars arrive on the red carpet followed by the ceremony itself on TV screens scattered around the venue. The evening opened with Neil Patrick Harris performing a stage show number followed by our hosts, Steve Martin and Alec Balwin doing some rather amusing gags. I have to say, the pair of them did a mighty fine job in my opinion. Far better than that of The BAFTA Awards where every joke went down like a lead balloon! The comedy highlight for me was Ben Stiller dressed as one of the Na’vi from Avatar which was just genius!

The biggest night in Hollywood is here and over the next few hours they’ll be tears, cheers and (hopefully) a few surprises as the 82nd Academy Awards are handed out.
The sordid trudge up the red carpet has finished and I’m going to be blogging live as the winners are announced, you can have a look at our Oscars predictions here and follow us on as the Twitter storm rages, or get all interactive with FilmXtra Tom who is video blogging the Oscars here.
My hopes are with Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan and I’m secretly hoping that Tarantino walks off with Best Picture for Inglourious Basterds and Coraline bests Up for Best Animated Feature.
Ok… the time is upon us. I’ll be updating the blog with the winners as I go, as well as providing as coherent a commentary as possible.
Remember to keep hitting...
