Former NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin is taking a job as VP of unscripted series at Netflix — reporting to Netflix VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg. It’s a bit of a reversal for the two execs: In 2010, Riegg joined NBC as vice president of alternative series & development, reporting to the heads of alternative programming there, who in turn reported to Gaspin.
It’s a return to the executive ranks for Gaspin, who most recently ran Gaspin Media as president. It was there that his output included Netflix’s “The Tinder Swindler,” as well as its “Rhythm & Flow.” His other credits included “The First Lady.”
“Jeff is such a huge talent, with so much experience across unscripted and television in general, and I couldn’t be more excited that he’s joining us,” said Riegg. “From ‘Rhythm & Flow’ to ‘Tinder Swindler,’ he’s already been part of the...

Exclusive: Netflix has found its new unscripted chief.
The streamer has hired Jeff Gaspin as VP Unscripted Series after a search for a high-profile figure to lead its burgeoning reality business.
It comes after Deadline revealed that Jenn Levy left the company last month and Brandon Riegg, who is VP Nonfiction Series, to whom Gaspin will report, started a search for top unscripted chief.
There were plenty of big unscripted names in the running for the position and Riegg is understood to have enquired about a number of execs overseeing unscripted for the broadcast networks and major studios.
Gaspin is a big get for Netflix given that he was previously Chairman of NBC Universal Television Entertainment from 2009-11.
However, his hire is less surprising considering he has been in business with Netflix and Riegg on a number of shows. He exec produced The Tinder Swindler, a true-crime series that was...

Another royal scandal is getting the Netflix treatment.
After “The Crown” concluded in 2023, the streaming platform is releasing film “Scoop” about the infamous 2019 BBC “Newsnight” interview between anchor Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew. “The Crown” alum Gillian Anderson portrays Maitlis in the movie based on the former “Newsnight” editor Sam McAlister’s book “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview.” Rufus Sewell plays Prince Andrew, the Duke of York at Buckingham Palace.
“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes flurry to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.S. civil case against convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. During the “Newsnight” broadcast, Prince Andrew addressed the allegations made by Epstein and his victims. Prince Andrew alleged that he only knew Epstein through socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who was later convicted on sex-trafficking charges in December 2021. Maxwell’s story...

“Priscilla” premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival on Monday, September 4. Written and directed by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola – who won for her original screenplay of “Lost in Translation” in 2004 – it’s her first film since “On the Rocks” in 2020. The A24 release “Priscilla” is adapted from Priscilla Beaulieu Presley’s acclaimed 1985 memoir “Elvis and Me,” recounting her tumultuous relationship with Elvis Presley from the age of 14 when the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was at the height of his fame. It’s described, “Through Priscilla’s eyes, Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland.” As such, it is said to paint a far more nuanced and complex/negative portrayal of Elvis than did last year’s Baz Luhrmann biopic.

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.

Gillian Anderson has been cast in Netflix’s Western drama series “The Abandons” from creator Kurt Sutter.
Anderson will play Constance, the matriarch of the wealthy Van Ness family who doubled the mining fortune she inherited from her husband. Her wealth, charm and power allowed her to forge relationships with political allies despite their town’s patriarchal bias.
The official Netflix logline for the show reads, “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. ‘The Abandons’ will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets,...

Designated Survivor stood as a remarkable example among those treasured few television shows that possess an undeniable allure, captivating audiences and cultivating a devoted cult following.

While some actors run away from horror movies, others happily run towards the genre. And if she has her way, Oscar winner Viola Davis will soon be battling zombies on the big screen.
Fresh off critically acclaimed roles in The First Lady, The Woman King, and this year’s Air, Viola Davis tells Indiewire that she wants to star in her own zombie horror movie!
“Listen, I would love to do a zombie movie,” Davis tells the outlet. “Now I say that, [but] in shooting it, I don’t know if I can distinguish between the real and the fiction because if someone was running at me as a zombie, I don’t know. You might hear some stories.”
Davis adds, “But I want a ‘Train to Busan.’ I want my version of ‘Train to Busan.’ I want to fight some zombies. That’s what I want to do.”

Hollywood — the world where stars are born or made has also been called out for having so many vices and for encouraging stereotypes. And the Netflix hit show Stranger Things is no different. The show has faced heavy criticism in the past for its lack of diversity and now for typecasting. In fact, Stranger Things star Shannon Purser called out the show and the industry at large, saying that “fat actors” are not allowed upward mobility.

This article contains spoilers for Transatlantic.
Netflix’s new period drama Transatlantic tells the story of Journalist Varian Fry (Cory Michael Smith), and American expatriate and heiress Mary Jayne Gold (Gillian Jacobs) who founded the Emergency Rescue Committee (Erc) that helped over 2,000 people flee the Nazis during World War II, without government support.
The series, created by Anna Winger and Daniel Hendler, is a fictional representation of true events in which people did whatever was necessary to save those in danger. So how much of Transatlantic is the real story and what did the creators leave out?

In both the series and real life, Gold and Fry helped prominent European figures such as political philosopher Hannah Arendt, painter Max Ernst and German novelist Heinrich Mann escape to the United States, away from the Nazis persecuting Jews across Europe.

Viola Davis and Julius Tennon have a pretty swoon-worthy love story. The accomplished actors first met in 1999 on set of their show "City of Angels," and sparks flew immediately. They later got married in June 2003, and it may have been fate that the pair got together. In 2022, on "Oprah + Viola: A Netflix Special Event," Davis opened up about how she specifically prayed to find a partner like Tennon.
After taking advice from one of her friends who instructed her to pray for the kind of man she wanted, Davis revealed that she listed off her ideal qualities, which started with asking for "a big Black man from the South." "He said, 'Viola, even the vacuous stuff, just put it all in there. Looks, everything,'" the Egot winner recalled her friend saying. "I said, 'Really? With God? I gotta tell him that?' He's like, 'Yes, you gotta put it all out there.

This article contains spoilers for 24 and episodes 1 and 2 of Rabbit Hole.
Since Keifer Sutherland played one of the most iconic American heroes of television in 24, the established actor has tried to recapture the magic he did as CTU (Counter Terrorism Unit) agent Jack Bauer. With a few short stops on the big screen, Sutherland’s television resume was padded with stints on Designated Survivor, The Fugitive, and The First Lady, often trading in his typical role of saving the president, for playing the commander-in-chief.
Yet nothing matched the audience numbers or spoke to fans as much as his eight-plus seasons on 24. Until now.
While The Fugitive certainly had life or death situations and Designated Survivor had political espionage, they lacked the same kind of intrigue as the Fox drama that started it all. Rabbit Hole seems like a great companion piece for 24 as the twists, turns, and action-centered plot feels...

It’s been six months since Chris McCarthy added Showtime to his portfolio, and he knows what a healthy swath of Hollywood has said. He’s read the network eulogies and seen the variations on “Rip Showtime” tweets. He’s even sat with folks who have bemoaned his stated plan to lean into franchises, be it more Billions or Dexter. And it would all probably irk him more if it weren’t exactly what he needed.
“People not thinking it’s going to work is the motivation. Like, great, perfect,” he says as he dives into a rotisserie chicken salad.
It’s a rainy March afternoon, and The Terrace at The Maybourne Beverly Hills, which McCarthy has selected for lunch (and lodging), lacks its usual bustle yet still has a smattering of soggy stars like Halle Berry, Jerrod Carmichael and Justin Bieber. Judy Greer has joined ABC’s “Drop-Off” (working title) as a series regular, Variety has learned.
She’ll play Amanda, the hyper-confident, uber-organized, mom who seemingly has it all together and runs the inner circle at Julia’s kids’ school. She’s an expert at the art of a compliment that’s actually an insult. Amanda, who usually arranges babysitting swaps with the moms during school vacations, arranges a swap with Julia, who agrees to watch her kids while Amanda prepares for one of her famous dinner parties…which ends in disaster for Julia.
She joins previously announced star Ellie Kemper, who leads the cast as Julia, a working mom for whom nothing is working so she goes looking for her village.
The series serves as the American adaptation of the British comedy “Motherland.” Variety exclusively reported the adaptation news. The show was previously set up at Hulu by Lionsgate.

How well do fact-based limited and anthology series perform at the Emmys? (Spoiler alert: very well)
Just as limited and anthology series based on real events have taken over the TV landscape, they have taken over the Emmys. But how well have programs of this particular genre actually gone over with the academy throughout the past few years?
Let’s take a look back at all nominations earned by limited and anthology series starting in 2015; that’s the year in which the rules were tweaked to require that a program can only compete as a limited series if it has a minimum of two episodes with a total running time of at least 150 minutes, tells a complete, non-recurring story, and doesn’t have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons.
This rule change came just a year after limited series (referred to as “miniseries” at the time) and TV movies were once again split up into separate program categories, undoing a three-year-old change that consolidated the two awards.
