The co-director of Finding Dory on making the film. Plus, he recommends an awful lot of movies to watch...
From working as an animator on A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2, through to directing shorts such as Burn-e and Toy Story Of Terror, Angus MacLane has worked his way up through his career at Pixar. So much so, that he’s now making his feature co-directing debut on Finding Dory, that lands in UK cinemas today.
He spared us some time for a chat – and it’s worth staying to the end where he starts firing out film recommendations….
I first spoke to you eight or nine years ago when you were talking about Wall-e, that you were supervising animator. And you told me then of an eight-year old who asked you a question about that film at a Q&A. And I do think...

Sadly, due to the delay of The Good Dinosaur, we won't be seeing Pixar Animation's sequel Finding Dory until the summer of 2016. The original film's director Andrew Stanton will get some help this time though. Pixar Planet (via SlashFilm) noticed a Twitter update from Stanton which named Angus MacLane as his co-director whilst posting an amusing Lego creation commemorating Iron Man. MacLane isn't new Pixar blood as he was at the helm of the Halloween animated short "Toy Story of Terror." Stanton doesn't specifically mention Finding Dory, but it's the only film he's working on at this time, so it just makes sense. MacLane hasn't just directed the aforementioned Pixar shorts though as he's been involved in some capacity on all of their films since A Bug's Life, right up through Toy Story 3. And yes, that includes Stanton's turns as director on Finding Nemo and Wall-e. Other shorts that...

The first of two twenty-two minute Toy Story TV shorts, Toy Story Of Terror, (say that three times fast) arrives on ABC in the Us on Wednesday the 16th of October.
Made by Pixar's California studio, not the Vancouver satellite tasked with producing Pixar spin-off short films, Toy Story Of Terror comes directed by Pixar stalwart Angus MacLane, who recently helmed shorts Burn-e and Small Fry.
Michael Giacchino has composed the score for the film, which sees the toys on a Halloween road trip that takes an unexpected turn. "On a detour leading them to a roadside motel, one of the toys goes missing, and the others find themselves caught in an eerie turn of events that must be stopped before they suffer the same fate.

Chicago – The second volume of shorts created by the most influential and creatively important studio of the last twenty years was recently released on Blu-ray and it’s undeniable that a few of these mini-films are simply better than their full-length competition. Some Oscar-nominated and some including beloved characters, this may not be as obvious a holiday choice as “Brave” or “Finding Nemo,” but “Pixar Short Films Collection: Volume 2” is one of the best family Blu-ray releases of the holiday season.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Collecting shorts that have often played in front of new theatrical releases since 2007, this volume includes Oscar nominees like “Presto” and “La Luna” along with several shorts that expand upon the universes of beloved Pixar films like “Ratatouille” (“Your Friend the Rat”), “Wall-e” (“Burn-e”), “Up” (“Dug’s Special Mission” & “George & A.J.”), “Cars” (“Air Mater” & “Time Travel Mater”), and “Toy Story” (“Hawaiian Vacation” & “Small Fry”). Pixar has become as known for its shorts as it has for its feature films, and the second release of a collection of these shorts is now available.
This time around, the featured titles consist of the shorts that played in front of theatrical titles, as well as short films featuring the cast from such movies as Up, Toy Story, and Wall•E. Though the collection itself does not come with a lot of bonuses, you do get some student films from the directors, and commentaries.
As with any Pixar release, the Blu-Ray does make a significant difference. I haven’t actually watched things like La Luna or Day & Night on a standard DVD, but I shudder at what gets lost, especially after seeing how they look here. That’s standard info though, and detailing the quality of the Blu-Ray is probably more than is necessary to anyone’s decision.

Oh, those geeks and their wonderful ways of storing minuscule tidbits of information and pulling them from their mental storage unit to spur on debates. What must it be like to listen to a group of them talk about a movie they love? How about a movie they’ve all worked on? That’s exactly what Disney and Pixar did for Wall*E. They’ve pulled four of the geekiest minds on the production crew, minds that would analyze every, minute detail of a film and test it for accuracy, and let them talk all over the film. And, like any good geek conversation, the pop cultural references come with each, nerdy breath. So, without any further ado, it’s time to find out what this Geek Squad has to say about Wall*E. Wall*E (2007) commentators: Bill Wise (character supervisor), Lindsey Collins (co-producer), Derek Thompson (story artist), Angus MacLane (production and storyboard artist, voice...

"Small Fry" is the latest in the Disney/Pixar theatrical shorts and the second of the Toy Story ones (the first being "Hawaiian Vacation" with Ken and Barbie). The Muppets promises to be one of the most fun movie experiences of 2011, and if all the parody teasers, trailers and other related marketing didn’t give us enough reason to rush out and see the film, this bit of news will. Disney film will be screening a brand-new short from Pixar, with the Toy Story franchise’s Buzz Lightyear in the spotlight.
Titled Small Fry, the seven-minute film is written and directed by Angus MacLane, the Pixar animator who previously wrote and directed the Wall-e-related short Burn-e. Apart from Buzz, several other Toy Story charcters will appear in the short, including Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and of course Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks). The other new star of note is Glee’s Jane Lynch, playing the vain support-group leader called Neptuna. The voices of the new mini characters are provided by MacLane himself, but Mini Buzz...

Time to meet... Buzz? Yep, it's 'lil Buzz, or Happy Meal-toy Buzz! There's a new Pixar short film attached to The Muppets in theaters later this month called Small Fry, featuring most of the beloved Toy Story toy cast, and some brand new toys. USA Today reveals the first look photo (we have another one below via Pixar Times) featuring Buzz Lightyear, both big and small. "It's like the Prince and the Pauper tale for toys," says writer/director Angus MacLane. "Except one of them happens to be 3 inches tall." I've seen the short and it's hilarious, worth going to theaters for this alone. I wouldn't be surprised if this lil guy is based on reality. Small Fry is directed by Pixar's Angus MacLane, a veteran animator at the studio since A Bug's Life, who also directed the short Burn-e on the Wall-e DVD. "There's something funny about having the...

While I am not entirely sure that fans of animation and puppets and joy and wonder and childhood dreams need yet another reason to check out The Muppets when it opens over Thanksgiving weekend, Disney and Pixar are not taking any chances, loading up the fleecy feel-good film of the holidays with an extra gift – a new Pixar short. But it’s not just any new Pixar short, it’s a Toy Story short. Small Fry returns us to a post-Toy Story 3 world, with (spoiler alert if for some horrific reason you’ve yet to see the third film, you cold-hearted bastard) all the toys happily living out a play-filled existence with wee lass Bonnie. Ever equal when it comes to said play time, Small Fry opens with Bonnie and her mom going on a fast food-outing, accompanied by both Buzz and Rex. But a tiny little tyrant capitalizes on some ball-room confusion, usurping...

Well, D23 has come and gone, and with Disney's insistence on controlling the message suffocating any spontaneity and excitement--coupled by a distinct lack of any real news other than some details about the new Pixar films--the event was a bit of let down. However, Disney/Pixar did let a couple more morsels spill regarding the previously announced "Toy Story" short that will precede "The Muppets." Angus MacLane has been revealed as the director. He's a longtime member of the Pixar art department who also helmed the short "Burn-e" on the "Wall-e" DVD. The plot for the forthcoming "Small Fry" will center…...

The gang from "Toy Story" showed up in a short film called "Hawaiian Vacation" that played before theatrical showings of "Cars 2" back in June. And now comes word that the characters will return in a second short, called "Small Fry." Plot: Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast food restaurant when a kids' meal toy version of Buzz takes his place. While Bonnie's toys are stuck with the annoying 3-inch-tall Buzz impersonator, the real Buzz is trapped in the restaurant at a support group for discarded toys. As Woody and the gang devise a way to rescue their friend, Buzz tries to escape the toy psychotherapy meeting. The new short is directed by Angus MacLane ("Burn-e" short) and will appear in theaters on November 23rd in front of "The Muppets."...

This weekend at the Disney’s D23 Expo, it was annoucned that the Toy Story gang are coming back to the big screen later this year on November 23. The next Toy Story adventure titled Small Fry will play before The Muppets. Angus MacLane, who directed the Pixar short Burn-e, will helm this new adventure featuring Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the playroom gang. Meanwhile The Pixar Times adds the following about the plot of Small Fry:
“Looks like Buzz Lightyear is left behind at a fast-food restaurant and must find his way back home. In doing so he encounters some less popular, happy meal-like toys. One of those toys, a Mermaid of sorts, will be voiced by Glee‘s Jane Lynch.”
These popular animated toys were last seen in Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation, which ran before Cars 2 this summer, and will be making its home video debut this November.

In recent years, Comic-Con has been criticized for becoming too Hollywood as all the major studios would come down to San Diego and woo fans with their upcoming projects. This year, Disney -- which owns both Marvel and Pixar -- didn't have a big presence [1] there. Most surmised that was because Disney has its own version of Comic-Con, The D23 Expo, a few weeks later. That was confirmed a few weeks ago [2] and now we have details on specifically which movies Disney will have on hand at D23, which takes place in Anaheim, CA from August 19-21. And if you thought Comic-Con was being invaded by movies, you ain't seen nothing yet. Confirmed films to have a presence at D23 are as follows: The Muppets, John Carter, Brave, The Avengers, Frankenweenie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, The Odd Life of Timothy Green, Wreck-It Ralph, and Monsters University. With Disney's big D23 event coming up later this month, they've now released a bunch of information on the event (who will be there, what's going to be talked about, and what to expect from the Expo).
All in all, it's about what you expected. There's going to be tons of stuff from Pixar (which is always great) and of course there is mention of The Avengers. I'm actually really hoping that we'll get more of a full teaser from The Avengers at this event. Remember, Avengers didn't have a big showing at Sdcc because Disney was saving it for D23, so hopefully there will be plenty of "Wow" moments from that film here. Anyway, here's the full release with all the info on what's going on this year:

It’s no surprise that Pixar is going into its bullpen to choose a director for their sequel to Monsters, Inc. Neil cast his vote for Angus MacLane (who directed the Wall-e short Burn-e), but we can now confirm that the job has gone to Dan Scanlon. This will be Scanlon’s first feature film, but he has a writing credit on Cars, a co-director credit on the short Mater and the Ghostlight, and he’s acted as a storyboard artist on several project. It’s difficult to say what kind of job Scanlon will do with Monsters University, but he’s got the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the Pixar team. The question really is, what will fans want to see in the sequel? What kind of partying does a young monster do while away at school?...

Will audiences be going to the cinema this summer to see short films, such as Toy Story: Hawaiian Vacation, rather than the main features, wonders James?
I find myself entwined in the very same feeling each time I visit the cinema in early spring. I'm sitting in there, waiting patiently for a film that I'm not that fussed about to flick onto the screen. To be honest, I'm probably only in there to keep out of the rain.
Then the trailers start and an animated lamp springs across the screen, making a little wheeze with every jump. And from that point, until I reach the depths of summer, I become a child. An impatient child, waiting to immerse myself in the colourful, majestic world of Pixar. Every year.
This year, however, I'm not so sure. I don't doubt that Cars 2 will have its charms. But I never fell...

While "Toy Story 3" teaser trailer outed previously didn't give any idea what to expect from the Disney/Pixar animation, animator Angus MacLane opens up about a few details of the third "Toy Story" movie. In an exclusive interview with Sci Fi Wire in Burbank, California, the director of short film "Burn-e" shared that the approach of the film will be coming from "the standpoint of [Andy] has grown up".
Though the movie's basic idea is that Andy has become an adult, MacLane furthermore noted that Andy's room will still be included in the film. "I can tell you Andy's room is in the movie. That's about all I can say," he said, not mentioning in details whether the room will be Andy's room people are familiar with or it will have a new setup.

When Toy Story 3 was announced to the wider world thanks to that little teaser before Up, a lot of people groaned. I don't know of a single person who hates either of the Toy Story films, and I don't think it's too mushy to say that they hold a pretty special place in everybody's heart. You don't want to see that watered down and exploited.
Thankfully, it's Pixar at the helm rather than sequel-squeezing Disney, and they assure everyone that the third installment will actually bring closure to the series. SciFi Wire caught up with animator Angus MacLane at the Saturn Awards (he was responsible for Burn-e, and has been with Pixar since Toy Story 2 where he created the crazy Buzz clone), and he spilled a few secrets on the newest adventures of Buzz and Woody. To the surprise of no one that saw Up, their final installment will be a bittersweet one.

"Wall-e"by Peter Dimako The best animated film of the year. Filled with romance, comedy, adventure and an earthly message, “Wall-e” is an eye-opener in multiple ways. I had read somewhere that someone wished for more dialogue in the film and, after seeing the film in wonderful Blu-ray for the second time, are at a loss of words for such a comedic comment. Dialogue is aplenty; however the machines are the central characters so speech from the bots is limited mostly to calling one another’s names. The story takes place seven hundred years into the future; a time when the Earth has been abandoned by humans due to garbage overflow. Thankfully “there’s more space in space” if you’ve grown tired of garbage“ in your face.” People have taken to living onboard giant space cruise ships with every single need and want attended to by the ship and its array of robotic servants.
