Even three decades after Speed‘s release, Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves remain one of the most adored onscreen duos, and it’s not surprising to see why. Not only were they impeccable in their respective roles, but the chemistry between the two was also off the charts. While the duo never dated in real life, years later, both actors confessed to having crushes on each other.
It’s not hard to see why it didn’t take long for the two to develop a sincere bond after crossing paths in Speed, as apart from being two of the kindest stars in showbiz, they also share a difficult past.

For Keanu Reeves, the foreboding shadow of violence has loomed large over his reputation as Mr. Nicest Guy in Hollywood ever since he retracted out of Oliver Stoneʼs Platoon in 1986. His decision to avoid on-screen brutality lasted all but 8 years before his action-man persona took over Hollywood and charmed critics and fans alike in the adrenaline-chasing blockbuster Speed in 1994.
What followed soon after was a gallery of his lifeʼs work encompassed within the works of the Wachowskisʼ The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003), Constantine (2005), 47 Ronin (2013), and most importantly, the franchise of John Wick (2014-present).

In 2013, filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch made a minor ripple with his FX-laden Keanu Reeves vehicle "47 Ronin." The actual story of the 47 Ronin comes from an incident in actual Japanese history in 1703, but has since been adapted thousands of times -- often under the name of the Chushingura -- becoming one of the most famous stories in Japanese history. Rinsch's film, however, added monsters and dragons to the story, transforming it into a typical fantasy blockbuster rather than a proper historical epic. "47 Ronin" only made $151 million worldwide on a reported $175 million budget.
It was enough, however, for Rinsch and his wife, Gabriela Rosés Bentancor, to court Netflix about their dream project, a sci-fi TV series called "Conquest." In 2018, when streaming services were booming in earnest and the Streaming Wars were getting into full swing, Rinsch felt the time was right to pitch his new idea. Even for Netflix, $55 million is a huge chunk of cash to drop on a series…especially if they don’t receive a single completed episode. But that’s just what happened when Netflix put 47 Ronin director Carl Rinsch in charge of a sci-fi saga, which has its own backstory involving Covid conspiracies, cryptocurrency and pandemic-era paranoia. Now this is worth a 10-part doc!
In a new feature by The New York Times chronicling Carl Rinsch and his quasi-attempts to make Conquest at Netflix, it’s claimed that the director “discovered Covid-19’s secret transmission mechanism and to be able to predict lightning strikes” as well as put a fifth of the budget into cryptocurrency and blew it on lavish items like several Rolls-Royces and designer clothes. Rinsch, for his part, is now suing Netflix for breach of contract, claiming they owe him $14 million. Yeah, good luck getting that check, Carl…...

In 2018, Carl Erik Rinsch, known for directing “47 Ronin,” pitched a sci-fi series about artificial humans, drawing interest from various studios amid a content-hungry era. Netflix, seeking a potential hit like “Stranger Things,” outbid competitors like Amazon with over $55 million and unprecedented creative freedom for Rinsch. This decision, as detailed by The New York Times, would soon become a regrettable venture for the streaming giant.
The project, “Conquest,” became a financial sinkhole, costing Netflix millions without yielding a single episode. Rinsch’s behavior reportedly grew erratic, involving claims of discovering Covid-19 secrets and predicting natural phenomena. His personal life also spiraled, as evidenced by his lavish spending on Rolls-Royces and luxury items, along with his intense stock market and cryptocurrency gambles.
Rinsch’s background in filmmaking was promising. Having worked under Ridley Scott and achieved success with a Philips short film, his talent wasn’t in question. However, his direction...

Around five years ago, Netflix spent a reported $55m on Conquest, a sci-fi TV series that was never finished – and may never be released at all…
After years of huge expenditure, and deals with some of the world’s best-known actors and filmmakers, streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ have reversed course and started to reduce costs. And as subscription prices are jacked up, shows are cancelled or quietly removed from platforms, few stories sum up the late 2010s era of peak streaming than the one just broken by The New York Times.
It reports that, in 2018, Netflix signed a deal with filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch to make an ambitious-sounding sci-fi series, initially called White Horse and later retitled Conquest. Set in a near future in which humans war with artificial beings called the Organic Intelligent, the series was snapped up by the streaming giant in a deal worth millions.

Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

Going into filming the action fantasia that is "John Wick: Chapter 4", franchise director Chad Stahelski had some big challenges to overcome. How the hell do you shoot a fight scene at the Arc de Triomphe at the height of rush hour? How do you shoot a video-game-inspired top-down sequence that requires John Wick to unleash a firestorm of incendiary "dragon's breath" ammo and looks like it was shot in one long take? And perhaps most challenging of all, how do you top three previous films which elevated action to an art form, influencing a whole era of similar films as a result?
Stahelski was used to tackling such issues. Back when "John Wick" was yet to make its 2014 debut, he and co-director David Leitch were basically making what was supposed to be a meager B-movie style project with a star whose then most recent movie — "47 Ronin" — was a bonafide box office bomb.

Hollywood history is full of interesting little mysteries. Like, how could the man responsible for directing the excellent "End of Watch" and writing the unimpeachable classic that is "Training Day" also be responsible for "Suicide Squad" and the embarrassment that was "Bright"? At least in the case of David Ayer's debut DC effort, we know studio meddling was largely to blame. But "Bright?" A hard boiled LA crime odyssey with orcs and fairies? Had anyone been asking for that combo?
Anyway, the point is that, if you only knew about these four movies, you might be under the impression Ayer has just two settings: he's either firing on all cylinders or misfiring entirely. But you'd be mistaken. Lurking between the zenith that was "Training Day" and the nadir that was "Bright," there's "Street Kings," a 2008 crime thriller which Ayer directed from a script by the master of LA noir fiction,...

Japanese drama feature “Yoko” won the Golden Goblet best picture award at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
The jury Grand Prix was awarded to Spain’s “Muyeres” with China’s Liu Jin winning the best director prize. The trio also collected additional prizes making them the only multiple winners in a ceremony that sprinkled its awards widely.
“Yoko,” directed by Kumakiri Kazuyoshi, who earlier this year saw melodramatic “#Manhole” play in Berlin, takes the structure of a road-movie and is a journey of self-discovery of a woman who had been socially isolated in her apartment for many years. Portrayed by global star Rinko Kikuchi, the woman is forced to confront the real world, and herself, when she takes a 658 kilometre cross-country journey to her father’s funeral. Without a cell phone or the money for public transport, she finds herself having to hitch hike. Kikuchi also earned the best actress award.

The story of the forty-seven ronin of Ako avenging their fallen master is a significant historical event in Japanese history that has practically gone down as a legend. The events that transpired have frequently been retold in media, most notably in literature through the fictionalized accounts known as “Chushingura.” In addition, many retellings of the vengeful retainers' plot for revenge have been depicted in traditional theater and in cinema. Filmmakers that have directed their depictions include Kenji Mizoguchi, Kunio Watanabe, and Hiroshi Inagaki. Of the countless cinematic renditions, one of the more underrated and unique is Kon Ichikawa's “47 Ronin.”

The story of the 47 Ronin is one of the most famous tales of the Samurai era. A story that has been passed down over the years and made into numerous films. It's a classic saga of betrayal, loyalty and sacrifice that makes it perfect for cinematic treatment. The Hollywood version in 2013 proved controversial in it's addition of fantasy elements and the casting of Keanu Reeves in the lead role. In addition to this controversy it was also critically panned. That alone makes the idea of a sequel daunting viewing. Those familiar with the story will also know that it's not exactly one that allows for a follow up. I'm sure the producers will have thought of that and have a completely compelling new narrative for this potential issue…..right??

Japan’s Hiroyuki Sanada has become one of Hollywood’s most familiar Asian actors, with action roles in franchises like “Mortal Kombat,” “Avengers: Endgame” and now “John Wick 4,” as well as nuanced character turns in “Minamata” and “The Railway Man.”
“John Wick” star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski created a role especially for Sanada so that he could join the action-packed universe. But it is the upcoming “Shogun” series for FX and Hulu that has given the Hollywood-based Sanada a new calling.
What do you like most about your part in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’?
There’s a scene between John Wick and my character Shimazu Koji, up on the roof top where the two old friends are drinking whiskey. Just talking. Talking, not fighting. That’s a very rare thing in this movie. It created atmosphere and established their chemistry.
As an action franchise, “John Wick” is pretty intense.

In an industry obsessed with sequels and reboots, going against established norms is often a risky but rewarding approach. In 2022, Zach Cregger's "Barbarian," budgeted at $4.5 million, became a sleeper hit when its upending of horror movie tropes and unique blend of terror and comedy brought in $44 million at the box office. You would think such a stark contrast of tones would result in one undermining the other, but somehow it worked.
Eight years prior, Keanu Reeves was looking for something similarly unorthodox to jump-start his career. Since 1999's "The Matrix," he'd struggled to pick the right projects, with the blunder that was 2013's "47 Ronin" almost killing the star's career. Then, the script for "John Wick" came across his desk, and Reeves was drawn to what he referred to as a "full-blooded character" — a preternaturally skilled hitman feared by even the toughest of crime bosses. Actor Keanu Reeves isn’t new to starring in movies with divisive responses. His filmography ranges from some of the most beloved films of all time, such as The Matrix, to absolute duds, such as 47 Ronin, that some audiences continue to hold against him. Here’s a look at the five best movies Reeves was ever a part of.

John Wick: Chapter 2 stands slightly above the following sequel with more user ratings, making its score stand a bit firmer. John was once retired, but he’s officially back when a former associate looks to make a power move over the High Table. However, he has no choice but to help due to a blood oath of the path. John Wick will soon return in "John Wick: Chapter 4," and at this point, he's basically become a synonym for near-invincible badass. Back in the 1980s, there were action icons like Rambo, who came to represent a similarly invincible figure in the public consciousness, capable of dispatching whole armies single-handedly. But in the 2010s, the pop culture landscape lacked such a figure. Matt Damon's Jason Bourne was the closest thing we had in the 2000s, but his action thrillers, coming as they did in the age of the "gritty reboot," seemed more grounded, despite their protagonist's improbably elite combat skills.
By 2014, however, audiences were ready for a break from the bleak aesthetic of the 2000s, which had seen everyone from James Bond to Batman brought down to Earth via their own more naturalistic reboots. And Keanu Reeves was the man to give it to them. After the massive hit that was 1999's "The Matrix,...

Despite making a career playing delightful but sometimes buffoonish himbo types, Keanu Reeves is actually an extremely well-researched performer. The "John Wick" actor, who has Asian ancestry, seems especially careful to cover all his bases when it comes to playing roles that draw from Asian storytelling traditions.
Reeves has long-since demonstrated a keen interest in samurai stories, learning katana and Japanese for the 2013 film "47 Ronin" and reading up on Bushidō, a moral code that embodies the philosophies of samurai culture. A full decade later, he's still applying what he's learned, this time for the latest installment of the popular action saga "John Wick." The film series began in New York, but as the franchise has grown, it's unveiled a global network of assassins. All the while, neck-snapping widower Wick has abided by his own moral code, which is often at odds with some of his coworkers. That will continue...

You can run, you can hide, and you can even go out and dry clean your finest bulletproof suit, but none of it will matter because the Baba Yaga is back ... again. In what has become one of the most bloodthirsty sagas of our modern action era, "John Wick: Chapter 4" is set to continue the harrowing adventures of one man simply trying to get out of the assassin game for good, no matter how many headshots and sword fights he has to get through first. Even diehard fans of the original 2014 masterpiece couldn't have envisioned the Keanu Reeves-starring thriller to spawn three sequels and counting. But here we are, over eight years later, looking forward to the fourth installment in a series that serves as the ultimate cautionary tale for reading the fine print whenever you sign on for a new job.

Here’s a sequel I’m willing to bet you forgot was coming, because I certainly did. It was announced over two years ago that Universal Pictures was developing a sequel to 47 Ronin, the 2013 action/fantasy movie that starred Keanu Reeves as a half-Japanese, half-English outcast who joins forces with a group of ronin out to avenge the death of their master. The film was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year, which made the announcement of a sequel all the more puzzling, but here we are. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment have released an extended clip from Blade of the 47 Ronin, which you can check out above.

John Wick was almost a half-century older before Keanu Reeves signed on.
The “Matrix” actor led a script rewrite with screenwriter Derek Kolstad before the 2014 action franchise was spurred, helmed by former stuntman Chad Stahleski. For the original screenplay, then titled “Scorn,” the Wick character was supposed to be 75 years old, with the revenge story taking place 25 years after his retirement.

Production wraps this week in Hungary on “Blade of the 47 Ronin,” a sequel to Universal’s 2013 Japanese-themed action classic “47 Ronin.” The new movie represents a substantial revamp that emphasizes Asian fantasy heroes and female characters and addresses some of the cultural criticisms of the previous Keanu Reeves-starring picture.
The action is moved forward by some 300 years to present-day Budapest, which is intended as a metaphor for East-West confluence, and where a meeting of the five Samurai clans is taking place. In addition to the male clan leaders, the meeting is also attended by three Onna Bugeisha (literally ‘Women Warriors’), though their presence is initially resented.
Production was handled by Universal Studios through its 1440 Productions unit for Netflix. The streamer is expected to release it sometime in 2022, though a specific date is still unknown.
The existence of female Samurai who fought alongside their male colleagues in feudal Japan is well documented.

In 2013, Variety listed "47 Ronin" as one of Hollywood's biggest box office bombs of the year. The film was the last Keanu Reeves vehicle to hit before "John Wick," which birthed a new action franchise and helped bring about a career resurgence for the actor. You might not think of "47 Ronin" as a franchise in the way of "John Wick" or "The Matrix," both of which have four-quels starring Reeves in the pipeline. However, "47 Ronin" does have a sequel on the way, headlined by one of Reeves' co-stars from "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum."

"John Wick" surpassed expectations and became a bona fide modern action classic. After the conclusion of "The Matrix" franchise, Keanu Reeves had been in a slump; his next set of potential blockbusters "Constantine," "The Day the Earth Stood Still," and "47 Ronin" all underperformed at the box office. But not "John Wick." Director Chad Stahelski and David Leitch revitalized Reeves as an action star; Wick's signature quip "I'm thinking I'm back" was a self-aware nod to Reeves' own resurgence.

It’s all a matter of perception when looking at the idea of a sequel to 47 Ronin, but right now it’s very easy to criticize this idea since it will admittedly have even less to do with the main idea of the samurai than the initial movie did. The ‘sequel’ is apparently going to be based 300 years after the initial story and will contain samurai and ninja elements as well as horror and action to go along with the idea. Perhaps the reason it’s so easy to feel critical of this is that while the first movie was a

On August 18, Ron Meyer was forced to resign his chairmanship at Universal Studios in the face of a sexual liaison come to light. As a longtime executive admitting that he paid off a mistress in order to prevent his company from facing embarrassment, it’s hard to imagine who would call him a victim of cancel culture. However unwittingly, he is part of a cultural revolution in Hollywood, one that is seeing the new Hollywood order push aside the old. Expect more veterans to be put out to pasture, victims of their fat paychecks, limited viability, or in the cases of Meyer and respected Warner Bros. studio head Kevin Tsujihara, the lure of the same femme fatale.
Dallying with Charlotte Kirk cost both 25-year studio executives their jobs, after each admitted to having consensual affairs with the British actress, who was trying to leverage a Hollywood career. Like WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey before him,...

47 Ronin may not have made an impact as an action flick—released in 2013 headlined by a post-Matrix, pre-John Wick comeback Keanu Reeves—but someone over at studio Universal apparently has enough love for the medieval-Japan samurai film to greenlight a sequel—specifically a cyberpunk sequel set in the far-future. Now, said sequel has a director.
Ron Yuan, an actor who moonlights as a director, has been hired to helm the untitled 47 Ronin sequel movie, according to Deadline. The film, set up at Universal Pictures Home Entertainment subsidiary Universal 1440 Entertainment, will contrast starkly from its historically-based, Reeves-starring predecessor, touted as a genre-hybrid cyberpunk story set 300 years in the future. It is also reportedly set to be directly distributed by Netflix, although that notion doesn’t seem to be reflected in the source report (at least in its current form). As appointed Yuan expresses in a statement:...

Typically, when a movie performs so poorly that it earns a reputation as one of the biggest box office bombs of a given year, it’s a good sign that the film in question won’t be getting a sequel. But inexplicably, that maxim does not seem to apply to the 2013 Keanu Reeves film 47 Ronin, […]

Exclusive: Mulan actor Ron Yuan will sit in the director’s chair for the upcoming untitled 47 Ronin sequel. The action-fantasy pic will be produced by Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production entity of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
“I’m incredibly excited to be working with Universal and the producing team on this genre-blending, martial arts, action, horror and cyber-punk film,” said Yuan. “This will be a fun, intense, supercharged thrill ride for viewers globally.”
The original film was directed by Carl Rinsch and written by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini from a story conceived by Morgan and Walter Hamada. Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Rinko Kikuchi and Ko Shibasaki starred in 47 Ronin, which was based on Chūshingura. The pic tells a fictionalized account of the titular 47 rōnin, a real-life group of samurai in the 18th century who set out to avenge the death of their master who was killed by a merciless shogun.

MGM Film Group chairman Michael De Luca made the announcement Tuesday. Abdy will oversee development, production and post-production for all MGM and Orion films, reporting to De Luca.
De Luca, the Oscar-nominated producer of “The Social Network” and a former executive at Sony and New Line, joined MGM in early January in the newly created role.
“I have long admired Pam for her exceptional abilities as both a studio executive and producer – both critical jobs in our industry and ones that she has handled with the utmost skill, taste and talent,” he said. “She is among the very best and we are all beyond thrilled that she will be joining the MGM team as we steer the studio into the future.”
