The not scary enough sky skeleton
TheLittleSongbird18 February 2022
My feelings on "The Scary Sky Skeleton" when younger were similar to those for "The Neon Phantom of the Roller Disco", great setting and great atmosphere but bland forgettable mystery and mixed feelings villain. But opinions often change overtime compared to when a child, and like the whole of Season 1 grew on me my assessments on some episodes did change. Namely having a much higher opinion of "When You Wish Upon a Star Creature" now and having a lower one for "The Sorcerer's a Menace".

As a young adult, sadly my just slightly above average opinion of "The Scary Sky Skeleton" had when younger have not changed all that much. It's not one of the worst episodes of 'Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo' (worst of Season 1 being "The Ransom of Scooby Chief"), but it's far from being one of the best (the best being "I Left My Neck in San Francisco") as well. Personally put it in the middle category, a category that includes "The Neon Phantom of the Roller Disco" and "Twenty Thousand Screams Under the Sea".

"The Scary Sky Skeleton" does have a lot of things done well. The animation has a nice creepiness to it, especially the suitably dark backgrounds. The music has no questionable placement and is without complaint tonally either. The voice acting from the regulars is excellent and quite good in support, Michael Bell as Sky Skeleton does sound menacing.

Loved the airplane setting, which was made the most of and suitably spooky. The episode starts off very well, the season did well with eerie opening scenes and while not one of the best ones "The Scary Sky Skeleton" still delivers. It was nice to learn more about Daphne and Wendy was likeable enough to make rooting for her easy. There are some funny lines, like the learning to needing to learn a lot about cowardice line (only Shaggy would say something like that), and the climax excites.

Sadly, too much of the rest of "The Scary Sky Skeleton" isn't as much. The story definitely has its moments, but too much of the mystery is too thin and with not much memorable. Wasn't surprised by much either, apart from the motive being not quite what was expected, and the pace has dull stretches. The sky skeleton generally underwhelms.

In not living up to his design and promising first appearance, personally found him pretty bland and any potential suspense is marred by the perpetrator being obvious very early on (not a good idea to put one of the most incriminating clues as soon as they are introduced). Scrappy is more a hindrance than an asset and his character traits are just too exaggerated.

Concluding, a bit conflicted here. 6/10.
