Heather Olander knew she would be taking on a challenge when she joined The CW as its first Head of Unscripted Programming.
Former NBCUniversal exec Olander, who previously oversaw shows such as Temptation Island and The Biggest Loser at USA Network, joined the broadcast network in January after Nexstar acquired it and following the hire of Brad Schwartz as President of Entertainment.
“If you take the idea of a broadcast network and completely transform it into something brand new, that’s massive,” she told Deadline.

The CW on Tuesday went public with its Summer 2023 schedule, and it's as acquisition-heavy as expected.
Family Law Season 2 is kicking things off on Friday, July 7, leading into the series premiere of Moonshine.
Family Law had a decent audience on the network last year, so bringing it back was a no-brainer.
Monday will be reserved for the acquired comedy series, with Son of a Critch, Children Ruin Everything, Run the Burbs, and Bump airing on the night.
In anticipation of FBoy Island's premiere on the network with originals in the fall, The CW will air episodes of Fboy Island Season 2.
As previously reported, The CW has also ordered FGirl Island.
All things considered, the schedule is a bit uneventful, and that's the tricky part of having few original series.
The CW's actual test will be how viewers warm to the network's new strategy.

In 2000, when Upn landed The Hughleys from ABC as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Roswell from The WB Network, industry insiders dubbed it the “Used Parts Network.” Flash forward two decades and The CW’s roster of homegrown scripted originals has tumbled from 18 in the 2021-22 broadcast season to only two shows, with three remaining on the bubble at press time.
The writing has been on the wall for what has become of The CW — whose current name represents its former owners, CBS Studios and Warner Bros. TV. But what is The CW’s brand under station group Nexstar, which has vowed to make the formerly younger-skewing network profitable by 2025? With CBS Studios and Warners now owning a mere 12.5 percent of the network each and Nexstar’s new focus on low-cost acquisitions and unscripted fare, The CW’s brand now may best be described as “Castoffs Wanted” or even “Curated Wreckage.

The CW has been busy north of the border.
The network has picked up The Spencer Sisters, a Canadian drama starring Caroline in the City star Lea Thompson and Superman & Lois’ Stacey Farber, for its fall lineup.
It is the latest Canadian series that it has acquired, this time from eOne, as the Nexstar-owned company’s scripted strategy becomes a little clearer.
The Spencer Sisters, which aired its first 10-part earlier this year on CTV (see trailer below), follows a mother and daughter duo who team up to start a private detective agency. It pairs mystery novelist Victoria Spencer (Thompson) and her daughter Darby Spencer (Farber) who are mistaken as sisters as they tackle puzzling cases.

"I feel really proud of representing the Latin community... I can recognise the effort of the writers, casting directors and producers that are pushing for true diversity in Australian TV. In the past I didn't really think that I would have a healthy career in Australia. That perception changed these past two years."

Paul Mescal has become both an Internet boyfriend and an Oscar nominee within just four years of making his cinematic debut.
The Irish actor first appeared in one episode of the 2019 TV series “Bump” before landing the star-making limited series “Normal People” based on Sally Rooney’s novel. Mescal played high school jock turned brooding university student Connell, who at once wooed and waited on classmate Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones). While memes of Mescal-as-Connell’s chain necklace went viral at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic (and Mescal landed an Emmy nomination), the actor made cameos in Rolling Stones and Phoebe Bridgers’ music videos before an explosive 2022 with three features, one landing him an Academy Award nomination.
“A lot of eyes were on [‘Normal People’] in a concentrated period of time,” Mescal told IndieWire’s Anne Thompson in 2020. “As a result, the fan response on social media, which was vast and immediate,...

Karen Gillan, Marton Csokas, Harry Greenwood and Thomas M Wright join the cast of book-to-film crime drama film “Sleeping Dogs,” which shoots in Australia from next month. They join the previously announced Russell Crowe in the cast.
The film is a book-to-film adaptation of E.O. Chirovici’s critically acclaimed novel, “The Book of Mirrors,” with a screenplay by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. The film also marks Cooper’s feature directorial debut.
In the wake of a cutting-edge Alzheimer’s treatment, Crowe’s character, a former homicide detective, is tasked with re-examining a brutal murder case from his past – the grisly murder of a college professor (Csokas). Fighting to regain his memory, the detective enlists his former partner to help him revive the investigation. They encounter a magnetic and mysterious woman (Gillan), a tangle of contradictions and secrets and a horrific reality that changes the detective’s world view in the blink of an eye.

Winnie Cheung’s “Residency,” which has its world premiere in the Bright Future section of Intl. Film Festival Rotterdam, has debuted its trailer (below). Alief is selling the film, which is a “haunting metafictional tale about female artists pushed beyond their limits at a cursed artist residency.”
The film, set at New York artists’ studio The Locker Room, is described by Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea as “an adventurous take on the final girl horror trope.” It is a “hybrid feature dancing between fiction and non-fiction norms that plays like a punk rock cover of Gaspar Noé’s ‘Climax.'”
Cheung commented: “Rather than representing women as sexualized victims through the traditional lens of male fantasies, I’m exploring the real horror behind the anxiety of being a female artist, which is often mixed in with pleasure, delirium and joy.”

Cinema Plus has secured theatrical rights in Australia and New Zealand to Alena Lodkina’s drama “Petrol.” Scheduled for release in March 2023, it has just vowed in main competition at the Marrakech Film Festival following its Locarno world premiere in August.
“Petrol” is produced by Kate Laurie, who has already collaborated with Lodkina on her first feature “Strange Colours” and short “There Is No Such Thing as a Jellyfish.” It was funded by Screen Australia, VicScreen, the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund, Sbs and Orange Entertainment, with Alief on board as its international sales agent.
The film – set in Melbourne, where the helmer has lived for the last 10 years – mirrors Lodkina’s own story. Just like her protagonist, Eva, she was born to Russian parents. But it soon takes a detour into a more mysterious territory when Eva befriends Mia: a performance artist haunted by the ghosts of the past.
