This excellent parody of The Dark Knight is one of the more distinctive episodes of the show
SLionsCricketreviews21 January 2018
"The Coon" is such an entertaining and excellent spoof of comic book movies, more specifically The Dark Knight which was all the rage (and still is to some extent) when it was first released in 2008. When a show goes on for as long as South Park has, it should be a welcoming refreshment to have an episode that is as atmospherically distinctive as "The Coon". None of this is to say that South Park feels recycled by this point because it doesn't but rather that "The Coon" is ever more so a uniquely entertaining episode of this show.

Cartman dresses up as a superhero and calls himself 'Coon' as he attempts to bring South Park's escalating 'crime' rate down but his time in the spotlight may be taken over by another masked superhero who calls himself Mysterion. This enrages Cartman who learns that Mysterion is one of his classmates.

"The Coon" is so visually spectacular that it completely nails the style and atmosphere of comic book movies, then and today, and more importantly, precisely captures the atmosphere of The Dark Knight as a parody. The visual of a silhouetted Cartman as Coon is one of my absolute favourite visuals of the show and the slithering manner in which he moves around is yet another excellent visual joke int he episode.

Some of my favourite elements of the episode include the broad parody of The Dark Knight and not just in terms of visuals, music and overall atmosphere but also in terms of the episode's 'commentary' of the Coon, whether or not he is a hero or a vigilante. Of course no one else besides Cartman services this parody and that's exactly why it works. After a night of saving the town of the degradation of society and its underbelly, Cartman is excited to spread the 'rumour' of Coon, the town's own personal superhero, and the awkwardly stiff manner in which he attempts to engage his friends into a political discussion was priceless. This is a great vocal performance by Trey Parker and I feel the need to say it simply because I have found his performance in the past couple of seasons a little more inconsistent but here, he's spot on.

We also get to welcome back Professor Chaos, his ally General Disarray and even the Police Chief character among others all of whom are appropriately used. There's hardly a wasted moment in this episode and that's why it works so well because of the ever present sense of urgency and momentum. It's a non-stop laugh riot that works because South Park as a series has a tremendously fleshed out world that even the broadest of parodies of a movie, nothing more, can feel genuine and even palpable.

All in all, "The Coon" is an excellent, imaginative and precise parody of The Dark Knight that puts some of its beloved characters into new and interesting territory.

Season 13 is starting out fairly strong. This is another great episode!
gangstahippie21 March 2009
While Season 12 was still good, it was probably the worst season in the series(though it did have some good ones)."The Coon" is the second episode of the 13th season of South Park. The new season is also airing faster in Canada.A few years back, it took about a year for the new season to air here. Then it took about a week, and now two days after the original airing, the new episodes are on comedy network."The Ring" was a hilarious and great episode which looks at teen girls and the jonas brothers. The Mickey Mouse character was hilarious and the episode was just good overall. Now this second episode entitled "The Coon", is a spoof of superhero movies such as "The Dark Knight".It involves Cartman having an alter-ego superhero named "The Coon".He pretends to fight crime and the police are sick of him.Meanwhile, a newer and better superhero has come to steal his spotlight and "The Coon" now needs to find out who it is.This episode has some very funny moments and it also features the return of Butters's alter-ego..."Professor Chaos"! I do not think we've seen him since Season 8.Anyway, "the coon" is another good South Park episode for Season 13!

South Park returns to form...
randomorwhat19 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Having been disappointed with the first season episode ('The Ring'), which I felt lacked real depth and subtlety, I though this episode delivered that lost promise.

It begins with an obvious 'super-hero' imitation, where Cartman has adopted the persona 'The Coon' (a raccoon reference...not what was expected!!) Indeed, there was very little dangerous in this episode, and I think this is a step forward for the writers. There was no need to shock, or surprise...no real need to make everything overblow or ridiculous. We were given back the funniest South Park characters, and their alter-egos (Professor Chaos, Cartman's new evil super-hero identity).

The episode focused on intrinsically good story-telling and intelligent jabbing at a genre which has recently been overly-milked by Hollywood, and has almost become an imitation of itself. Well-rounded, well voiced and very well shot, the episode was backed up by a cleverly over-the-top musical score and ambiguous ending.

Well done Trey Parker and Matt Stone; you have made a return to form with great storytelling, intelligent writing and some brilliant pieces of continuity. I was very happy to see references to past episodes, something some recent series have lacked.

An 8/10 - South Park reaffirms itself as being a subtle form of comedy, and, in my mind, the funniest cartoon on television.

"every town needs a coon"
RainDogJr19 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Difficult times, the change has not come yet but, why worry if Cartman saw The Dark Knight, The Spirit and Watchmen? Why worry if the Coon is the there to stop rapists? Well if you are the commissioner or any normal citizen well you will have to worry because the Coon can be with you at any moment just to annoy! Certainly superheroes like Batman or Spiderman only care about the safety of the citizens of their respective cities, but on the other hand the Coon practically "saves" a woman from the "attack" of her boyfriend and is there waiting to see if he appears on the news or if he has some geeky fans. So certainly South Park has not in the Coon its symbol, its protector but there's a mysterious boy who, like the Coon, also saw The Dark Knight, The Spirit and Watchmen, wears a mask but who, unlike the Coon, isn't fat and has the trust of the citizens of South Park. Who is Mysterion? That's the question that the Coon has in mind, certainly the Coon can't accept another boy who like him imitates the voice of Bale's Batman, knows the lines of the Spirit and stuff. Of course the Coon is not the only one who wants to f*** Mysterion, for sure he is the only good guy who wants that and of course the evilest villains are doing what they are suppose to as villains, they are trying to eliminate both the Coon and Mysterion. We will have on one hand as the villain the cutest and most friendly and innocent kid from South Park and on the other hand as the superhero simply an a******, certainly Professor Chaos is here! And is simply fantastic and hilarious since the Coon joins Professor Chaos and General Disarray and at one point Chaos will send a threat, he will be like Ledger's Oscar winning Joker, he will destroy a hospital if Mysterion don't reveals who is really. Of course you can imagine the reaction of Butters while he's reading the threat, certainly we knew that Cartman is a terrific villain! After all, his plan was successful, the Coon will be the only superhero in South Park, he will continue talking like Bale's Batman (hilarious when the Coon forgets to talk like Bale's Batman!), certainly nobody cares about the Coon. What fourth grader was Mysterion? Is hilarious to have again the joke of "well all the faces look the same" so certainly we are not sure who was Mysterion (we are sure he wasn't the only fat kid, the only black, the only Jew and the two handicapped kids) but of what I'm sure is that Trey, Matt and company are doing a great job, so far Season 13 is terrific!

Cartman: Superhero!
Tweekums25 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
As this episode opens Cartman's distinct but deeper than usual voice provides a film noir style introduction as he explains how crime in South Park has risen and to counter that crime it needs a need kind of crime fighter; and Cartman is that crime fighter! Wearing a raccoon costume and calling himself 'The Coon' he sets about cleaning up South Park... we see him rescue a woman from a rapist (actually her boyfriend whose attentions were welcome) and pay a visit to the police who make it clear they wish he'd just go away. The next day nobody is talking about The Coon so Cartman tells everybody here has heard where The Coon will be that night... none of them turns up but somebody else in a costume does... the mysterious Mysterion! Cartman is furious that there is another superhero in town; especially as everybody pats attention to Mysterion. So he sets about trying to discover his identity. To do this he will go to any length; even team up with the evil Professor Chaos (Butters) and threaten to blow up a hospital unless Mysterion unmasks himself!

This was a pretty funny episode; I liked the film noir style opening; even the animation looked darker. The gritty feel and gravelly voices are clearly inspired by Christopher Nolan's Batman films but you don't need to have watched those films to enjoy this. It is predictable but hilarious that Cartman will resort to committing an atrocity in order to get rid of a rival crime fighter; equally funny is how despite all his attempts nobody is even slightly interested in The Coon but they all want to know who Mysterion is. The final 'unmasking' of Mysterion is funny too because it is done in a way that still leaves his identity a mystery to the viewer!

If your going to use a slur, at least be clear about why your doing it.
klondikeMIC3 July 2018
I'm surprised at the lack of negative reviews for this episode. Not only was it boring, it was confusing. The joke seems to weigh heavily on the use of the racial slur. This is when I stopped watching South Park. It was a very heated time, racially, in America when this came out, and still is, but nobody calls the writers of South Park "race-baiters" for stoking the flames of division, or pandering to their white supremacist crowd. I grew up with South Park, and have put up with plenty of black jokes, but at least they seemed to have a heart, and tried to always show the other side of the coin. Now I'm not sure who or what South Park is. This is when South Park went downhill for me.
