Quite awful
Sergiodave11 May 2022
The only good thing about this movie is its length. I've seen better acting at a kid's nativity play, and the script might well have been written by a kindergarten attendee. At the time of writing this there were 9 reviews on IMDb, 8 of which gave 10/10 and were all first time reviewers, quelle surprise! Avoid like the plague.

a Shame
shadowofhero-4651919 May 2022
It's a shame about all the hassle.

The costumes aren't bad at all, and the forest setting fits.

But then you hear the dialogues, see the bad staging and the weak actors.

Sorry for my self

It is not worth wasting your time watching it. In this way, it is clear that the producer is trying to save as much as he can from the budget. Even the performance of the actors is not convincing for the viewer, whether in dialogue or fighting scenes. Even the heroine's way of holding the arrow is clearly not convincing.

weird but interesting
john-256-261530 May 2022
Nice to see a woman lead who is competent in fighting and who rescues the damsel in distress (Robin). Bravo.

But this is an overtly amateur production for a number of reasons.

1. Clothes are too new and unused.

2. Marian wears overt makeup - in AD1199 - after being in an abbey for 3 years. Yeah.. she hid her mascara in her habit so the abbess wouldn't shout at her, I assume.

3. Huts etc look too new and unused. Three years, they need to be dusty and/or dirty etc.

4. Weapons etc generally do not draw blood or kill, even sword slashes etc. Only one wound seems to draw blood.

5. Robin survives too many wounds to be believable. He'd most likely be killed by any of them, within minutes.

6. The characters are generally incompetent in battle except Marian, and only, right at the end, does she turn it around and become a more superhero-like character. However, given that Robin has spent 3 years in battle and he survived, how can he be THIS helpless? I get that they want the movie to be about her, and make the woman the hero, but objectively, he should not be that clean shaven and pretty and ineffectual. He should at least be able to fight if he didn't die after 3 years crusading.

7. The sound of a crowd cheering at the "Execution" scene is weird given that there are like 10 people in attendance and that Robin is still known as a hero of the people.

8. No idea who most of the baddies are, or why they want to kill Robin, except Sheriff of Nottingham, who we know wants to kill him. E.g. The weird bishop guy, the Sheriff's flunky, his lieutenant guy with the beard, - all of them need some backstory to explain why, in the absence of the Sheriff, they still have it in for Robin, and why they hold off murder when they do have plenty of opportunity.

9. Forest scenes are confusing, they feel like a horror movie or "The Village" but then switch to medieval battle. It has to do with the trees and atmospheric sounds i think. And the drone footage. But it makes it unclear what the genre is meant to be for a few seconds.

10. It opens with Marian wearing a cool superhero type uniform and being accurate in her shooting, but she doesn't go back to that level of cool till right at the end, but she doesn't break out her cool uniform more than the opening scene. Which is kinda disappointing, if you're familiar with superhero movies - you except the hero to put on their uniform again when going back into superhero mode.

11. Home alone traps? Just not very effective. Why bother if they're not effective?

I'd say do watch it, mostly to get an idea of just how used to specific styles of film you are used to, so you can see just how it can be ... er... offbalanced. Also, because finally a woman is the hero. But apart from that, it just feels like a group of friend got their iphones out and made a cool project on a low budget.

Not really a winner!

Warning: Spoilers
I just watched the Adventures of Maid Marion. Unfortunately, it was an amateurish attempt at an action movie. Each scene was without an attempt to make it real. The finishing touch for me was in the last scene where Marion kills the sheriff and her sword doesn't contain any blood.

Boring Rehash
Oh, have we run out of ideas? Well then, let's take an old famous story so we can skip paying any writers and lets rehash it AGAIN. Are we going to do anything original with it? Why no, of course not - why bother?

This is quite simply TERRIBLE. Whoever was involved in this, hang your heads in shame.

AVOID this boring pile of tripe. My one-star rating is for the camera person who had to film this garbage, it deserves a minus tating.

Was this a necessary tale to tell?...
paul_haakonsen11 May 2022
Well, truth be told, then I wasn't exactly expecting a whole lot from writer and director Bill Thomas's 2022 adventure movie "The Adventures of Maid Marian". I mean, the concept of the storyline just oozed pointlessness and felt rather unnecessary.

But still, I will say that the movie's cover/poster was actually interesting enough to get my attention, and with "The Adventures of Maid Marian" being a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give it a chance.

And as luck would have it, then "The Adventures of Maid Marian" was as you would assume it to be. Yeah, this movie was not really an outstanding movie experience, and it certainly wasn't one that was particularly necessary in order to expand upon the lore of the Robin Hood legend.

The storyline was mediocre at best, but I never really did submerge myself fully into it, as the movie just never caught on with my particular interest. So it writer and director Bill Thomas didn't exactly churn out a movie that was overly entertaining for me.

The acting performances in "The Adventures of Maid Marian" were adequate. Needless to say that I wasn't familiar with a single performer on the cast list here. That is usually something I enjoy when I watch a movie, but since the actresses and actors in "The Adventures of Maid Marian" virtually had nothing interesting to work with, this just didn't have all that much of an appeal.

Visually then "The Adventures of Maid Marian" was actually okay. The costumes and props were adequate and definitely felt like something adequate for that particular era. It was perhaps a bit too clean and dandy, maybe some dirt, grime and weathering would have made it all the more realistic and believable.

I am sure that there is an audience out there for a movie such as "The Adventures of Maid Marian", perhaps a merry bunch of live action role-playing people will get a kick out of this movie.

My rating of "The Adventures of Maid Marian", since I wasn't particularly impressed or entertained, lands on a four out of ten stars.

Woeful.
sinatra-3583613 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why did they bother? The acting was terrible, Robin Hood looked way to young! Why that actor was ever picked is beyond the 5 of us that sat through this rubbish! Example : the Great Robin of Sherwood is a 5 pound weakling! But hey it's ok cause Maid Marian saves the day! Time and time a gain. Errol Flynn would be turning in his grave. Just don't bother.

Poorly conceived
AgentSauvage8 September 2022
Sophie Craig did her best, but was surrounded by people who seemed to have no intent to put any effort into telling the story or reciting their lines. Everyone was very clean, which seems inappropriate considering the era depicted. Very poor staging and directing and editing. The supposed historic sites were presumably chosen because they were cheap, not because they depict the relevant era. Kirklees Priory was represented by a church, without any of the necessary residential quarters nor protective walls there would have been to help keep the Nuns safe. It was shown in long shot atop a hill, but on site it clearly was not so placed and had a tarmacked road outside the gate in the hedge. The ruined building at 16 minutes into the film clearly has C20th housing in the middle distance - did no-one even try to edit the images? The story then took a downhill turn.

I gave up after half an hour.

They all look embarrassed
atarrant-8841231 July 2023
Wanted to like this but everything just kept getting poorer and poorer. Waiting patiently for the next scene and hoping it might be a little better. It never happened. I guess the budget was very low and if anyone had read any history then they'd only remembered the chapter titles. Everyone is so clean and polished, just doesn't fit. The lead tried her hardest but just couldn't carry the others as well as the script. I guess if you're really not fussy then this will fill an afternoon for you. Otherwise turn off the screen and go and make a bow and arrow, I'm sure it will be better than anything you saw in this movie.

Waste of time Warning: Spoilers
It's hard to keep watching when 25 min of the start is bogged down by Maid Marian walking through a forrest. Then comes Robin Hood who looks like a clean cut student from some the oxford or cambridge rowing team. There's no chemistry at all with this pair. Que 45 min they are still aimlessly wandering the forrest getting into skirmishes and somehow escaping a situation where Robin throws a helmet at the bad guys shoulder and knocks him off his feet despite the fact he has a grip of Marian and a knife to her gullet. Friar tuck shows up or is it Little Jon, or is it Holdor from GOT who knows. He has zero character depth like the rest of the characters.

The acting is lazy the directing and editing a shambles... and there's no endearing qualities. Watch it if you like but don't expect anything worthwhile.

Ps pretty sure that all this time in a medieval forrest had someone would get at least a speck of dirt on their face but the makeup is as bad as everything else in this waste of time and money!

Great fun!
justmatt-077689 May 2022
Thinking about this afterwards made me feel nostalgic. Like it would be the kind of story we'd peform as kids in the woods if we had a budget, and real swords and armour - and that's where the charm of the film is. The film makers and cast obviously had a blast making this and their passion shines through. Sure it's low budget but they squeeze every penny and put it on screen. Sophie Craig is a delight as Marian; equally bad-ass as she is vulnerable. And it's Marian's own story; it's not a carbon copy of Robin Hood, it's a Maid Marian film, and there is so much room for more. Sequel please! I want to see more.

Maid Marian
robjoo9 May 2022
I enjoyed it. I don't need there to be a massive Hollywood budget in order to appreciate a film. I'd watch it again. I'll always love Sophie Craig and I hope to see a sequel soon.

Marians story done justice!
erinwalmsley-3528310 May 2022
We've all seen and heard Robin hoods story, and this doesn't replace him, it just tells marians side afterward. The perspective it gives to her is brilliant. And I loved the way they did this, it was so enjoyable to watch, beautiful scenery and emotive acting, especially from Sophie Craig, she really captures the watchers heart! The cast should be proud you can truly see the work they put in and brought this side of the well known story to life! And left open for a sequel, here's hoping!

Amazing actress
What a talented actor Sophie Craig is. She will go so far. Absolutely amazing acting. Everyone who was apart of this film should be so proud. Puts some high budget films to shame. Well done.

Great modern take on a classic tale
sarah_mann-1236411 May 2022
I really enjoyed the fighting scenes and depicts maid Marian as a strong female character who adds an interesting twist to a classic story. I think for a budget film it was excellent and I think the critics were a bit too harsh in judging the film. I think Sophie Craig is a diverse and amazing actress who has really shown she is capable of more amazing things and I would love to see what she could do with a bigger budget and wishing the whole cast the best of luck!

A star is born
adamcruickshank10 May 2022
I did rather like it and I'm hard to please. There were no pointless fillers to pad it out. The time flew by and I wasn't left with the same feeling I had after watching battlefield earth.

The twists were actually twists. I didn't see them coming and usually I would.

Some of the cinematography was amazing for the budget. The props unconvincing really. Understandable on a budget.

Sophie is a star though. Multi talented. Properly trained. Not a social media nobody as others have suggested.

The videos she made during lockdown kept a lot of us going through that hard time.

Such a great film!
chukwudiononye10 May 2022
This was a really good movie. Everyone involved should be so proud of themselves. This cast showed you don't need the largest budget in the world to make something authentic and impactful. I was drawn into the characters journeys and the acting was also really good. There was also the perfect balance between the fight scenes and the love story which I think was well thought out.

Sophie Craig and Dominic did a fantastic job as well as the rest of the cast who all added something unique to the table.

I feel there might be a number 2 and I would love to see what they come up with next as well as the direction they go in, with this first movie acting as the foundation to do even bigger things! Well done to everyone involved in this!

An action film? An adventure film?
sydmwswy18 July 2022
A simple beautiful film, without pretentiousness. It seems that it was not meant to be an action movie, the action scenes that are related to the female actor are better than the male actor, but still not realistic enough. Maybe if the action was at least ten seconds, the result would have been much better. We need to see at least three or four carefully designed images of the events of the film to have a real adventure.

Simply entertainig
falangsabai13 May 2022
Robin Hood has always been a classic subject for movies and television, and I've enjoyed most versions over 65 years. The reviewer who said this story did not need to be told, frankly, annoyed me. All Robin Hood stories are exciting, and this is a totally unique angle. Marian as the protagonist, and it brings back some favorite characters: little John, Tuck and of course the dastardly former sheriff of Nottingham, and the lackey Guy of Gisbane. Yes, this was not a big budget extravaganza, but it was done simply and well. It does seem to be done as a pilot for a TV series, but that's OK. Just watch and enjoy.

Very Enjoyable.
jjparish18 July 2022
The time flew by watching this one. Basically its a few days in the life of marian and robin fighting off some utterly duplicitious bad guys. With marian taking the lead as a kick ass fighter and the main rescuer of robin when he is in trouble. Which he was for most of the film. The actress playing marian was great. Robin was played by someone far too young though. This film reminded me of Keira Knightley's film, Princess Of Thieves, where she played robin hoods daughter. All in all, was i entertained? Yes i was!

I Won't Lie
bemyfriend-4018429 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I won't lie to you. I love tough girl movies. And that's what this movie is. It is all that it is; but that is enough for me. There are long sequences of Sophie running through the woods, up hills, and everywhere else. She can run all day and keep going. A tough girl movie is nothing without good fight scenes; and Sophie's action scenes are competent enough to be satisfying. Other reviewers mentioned the lack of blood. They are right. There is none. But as long as we're suspending disbelief, it doesn't matter much. Unless it does to you. There are no scenes which reveal how Marian acquired her fighting skills. Nor is there much of a story at all, besides Marian almost single handedly, physically beating the bad guys; and doing ALL of the planning. Yeah, it's THAT kind of movie. And I love it. Seen on Tubi, the free streaming site, which also has live TV.
