The rating of 10, excellent, applies to the direction and production of this play, not to the script. As I was the writer, I could not possibly rate it. The director John Glenister was appreciative enough of writers in general to invite me to the first read-through and to the filming. I found it riveting to watch the way the three actors, Annette Crosbie, Maurice Denham and Trevor Eve, felt their way into the parts. Maurice's interpretation of the retiring headmaster stayed the same from first to final take. Annette didn't decide how to play the portrait-painter until the very last moment, which was unsettling but in the end gave her performance the sharp edge of unpredictable realism. I think this was Trevor Eve's first television appearance, the start of a glowing career. This was my first and only attempt at writing for television. I loved the experience. Sadly, I somehow missed the opportunity to get a video recording as I lived abroad at the time. Does anyone know how I could get hold of one?
