Everybody's favourite arcade beat em up starring the 4 green turtles are back! But can the 3D visuals make up for the games other flaws?
SonicBoom7725 January 2010
Turtles in Time for the SNES is just a personal favorite all time game of mine. It is for sure the best beat em ups I have played and when I heard of 3D animated remake I was extremely interested. I downloaded the game on PSN today and it was very cool to see the visuals jump to life out of the arcade/SNES. But other than a few minor CONS it for sure could have been a lot better. First off let me start with my first complaint. THE MUSIC! The music is not TMNT and more importantly it is not good to hear. I would have loved to have the original music here to add for the big nostalgia feel. The fighting system could have had a bit more to it. Updating it a bit would have been nice for more funnier gameplay. What worked than doesn't work now. However the voice acting is nice here making it on par with the original. Perhaps the biggest problem rivalling the music is the removing of some levels. Looks like Ubisoft was rushing to get the game out on XBL and PSN and this caused it's ultimate problem. The game should have had all the classic levels here. By the time I got to the final battle with splinter I realized it was the end of the game and I still hadn't had the classic elevator battle and the coolest and one of my favorite levels of the game which is when you have to trough the foot clan members towards Splinter is a cool 3D moment. To play online is a great add on. Beat em is still fun,to see the graphics and animations come to life is cool to see. You can play story mode, survival and quick mode online with other users. However once you get to 3-4 players the screen becomes cluttered and you lose sight of your character and you get confused with other turtles since they all look the same besides the color of course. Not to mention the constant explosions and foot clan members attacking you does not help however when it comes to the boss battle things spread out smoothly and is clear to play without causing to much confusing even with 4 players. I would say go head and play it only if you are a die hard fan of TMNT and the original game like myself. This for sure is not a bad game by any means. Although because of the removed levels game can be completed in half an hour and that's not even on easy difficulty although the challenge modes and difficulty settings keeps the replay value good.

PROS Graphics, Nostalgia, Beat em up fun!, Online, Trophies, Good replay value

CONS Removed levels from the original arcade/SNES, Online can get clustered once 3-4 players come in, Original music replaced with bad music, Shorter game due to levels removed

6.7/10

Cowabunga, dudes! The arcade classic gets a mondo make-over!

Warning: Spoilers
Remember Turtles in Time? Of course you do, playing it in the arcade, or at home on the Super Nintendo. Rescuing the State of Liberty, taking down ol' Shredhead and his army of mutants and Foot Soldiers along the way. Great stuff. But now, the Turtles enter the 21st century with an all new digital upgrade to this classic masterpiece. We're not talking enhanced picture and sound, we're talking the whole nine yards: 3D characters, new looks to the end bosses, graphic enhanced levels. It seems like a whole new game. Like playing Turtles in Time for the first time again. Those of you familiar with the Super Nintendo version might be disappointed because Re-Shelled is a remake of the arcade version, so Slash, Rat King, Rocksteady and Bebop are not in the game. Baxter Stockman, Tokka, Rahzar and Leatherhead have been given new looks to be more realistic and slightly more frightening. The game may appear difficult at first, just until you figure out the moves and learn how to defeat certain enemies. The best turtles to play full games with are Leonardo and Michaelangelo, as Leo has the longer weapon, pushing Donatello to second place, and Mikey is a wild dude, faster than Raph. Donny still has his long range bo staff, but he's still the slowest turtle, and Raph is still fast and furious, but he has the shortest weapon. But all 4 turtles are fun to play as. Unfortunately, which ever turtle you choose, you're stuck with until the end of the game. That's right, one down side is you cannot switch your turtle during the game. This hasn't happened since the Arcade Game was released on Nintendo, so that's a bummer. Not even if you lose all your lives and have to continue, the turtle you chose is the turtle you get. Some bosses are pretty easy, like Tokka and Rahzar are complete pushovers as opposed to their arcade counterparts. They're easy. Metalhead in level 2, also easy. "Super" Krang in Neon Nightriders, not to super. Baxter Stockman is pretty simple too, especially with his second gun; the hard bosses: Cement Man (where did he come from anyway?) I call him Clayface because he looks exactly like the Batman villain. He's difficult, because when he turns into a puddle of goo and follows you around, if he hits you, you take damage. You have to outrun him until he builds back up again. If you're Donatello, this may prove difficult; Leatherhead is pretty tough too. He'll charge you and throw knives at you, but eventually you can figure out a pattern and take his butt down; I'd say Shredder is the toughest version in any Turtles game. To beat him, you have to rely on your jump attacks. DO NOT just stand there and try to hit him, he'll jump back and his sword has incredible reach and will cause you a good deal of damage. Use your jump attacks on him and then jump back, and eventually you'll send him to meet his maker. The ending sucks. The turtles return the statue, pose on the Turtle Blimp surrounded by fireworks, then the credits roll. Nothing too spectacular, but the game itself is fun. You find you can learn new tricks each time you play it. Many people slam this version because it isn't like the Super Nintendo version and because it took away what made the arcade version fun, which I don't think is true. If you want the Super Nintendo version, play it. When you want a whole new experience, try Re-Shelled. You won't regret it. It was a PAIN for me to get, but it was worth it. I hope they consider doing a Re-Shelled version for the original 1989 Arcade Game, which is still awesome 20 years later. But for now, give Turtles in Time Re-Shelled a try. It's a great game, and fans of Ninja Turtles will consider it a sight for sore eyes. It's incredible! It's difficult and challenging, but aren't all good games? Plus, it's pretty funny to hear Raphael say "Cowabunga" and "Pizza power".

Pathetic waste of a licence

Remember the arcade classic Turtles in Time which was ably ported to the SNES back in the day? How would you like to play that on your PlayStation? Well tough, you're not getting it! Instead you will have to make do with a cheap 2.5 remake with awful controls, poor programming, bland, boring gameplay, flaw boss battles that go on forever, and a giant dollop of crushing disappointment as you trudge through the levels. Not a single moment of joy will light-up your experience.

Why Ubisoft? Why? The original game was perfect. This pathetic remake isn't worth the code it's programmed on. Who thought this would be a good idea? There is absolutely nothing, NOTHING memorable about this game whatsoever, and if it were not for the presence of a few obligatory characters this is barely even recognizable as a TMNT product.

Do not waste your money on this game. You have been warned.
