Exclusive: Blood in the Water, the true story of the murder at sea of Philip Boudreau, is set to be adapted for screen after Pictou Twist Pictures, the company founded by Trailer Park Boys co-creator Barrie Dunn optioned the rights.
Pictou Twist Pictures and Ion Inc. acquired the film and television rights to the book, which was written by late Canadian author Silver Donald Cameron.
Blood in the Water tells the story of the 2013 murder of Philip Boudreau, a notorious outlaw – equally loved and hated – who was killed while vandalizing the lobster traps of three Cape Breton fishermen.
The book was billed as a “must-read” by Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid’s Tale
Dunn is the co-creator, writer and producer of Canadian mockumentary series The Trailer Park Boys, which ran for over 100 episodes and spawned a number of feature films. He founded Pictou Twist Pictures with Patrick Graham to focus on political dramas and thrillers,...

Previously titled The Guys Who Move Furniture, Trailer Park Boys’ creator/director back behind the camera this year with Moving Day – a slightly less bland re-titling.
Will Sasso (the upcoming The Three Stooges) stars in the lead, alongside Victor Garber (Alias), Charlie Murphy (Night at the Museum [and Eddie’s brother]), and comedian Gerry Dee.
Alliance Films have released the first trailer, giving us our first look at what so far seems to be a bit of a tame workplace comedy – it has nothing on, say, Office Space or Clerks.
“From director Mike Clattenburg (Afghan Luke, The Trailer Park Boys) comes the new workplace comedy, Moving Day starring Will Sasso (The upcoming Three Stooges movie, TV’s $#*! My Dad Says). Actor has contacted friends via email to assure them he is safe and heading to 30-day rehab programme
'Missing' Terminator star Nick Stahl has contacted friends to assure them he is safe and heading to rehab, according to reports.
The 32-year-old actor's absence was reported to police last week by his estranged wife. Roseann Stahl told officers her husband had been frequenting the notorious Skid Row quarter of Los Angeles and said she was concerned he may have been caught up in drug-related difficulties.
According to TMZ, Stahl contacted friends via email on Friday apologising for scaring them and stating that he was heading to rehab. Roseann, the mother of his daughter Marlo, was not on the list of recipients.
"I'm relieved," she told People magazine. "But I'm also skeptical that he is really in rehab." She said she had read the "unemotional and unapologetic" email because she has access to her husband's account.

Well here's a strange and unfortunate bit of news that, while perhaps somewhat tabloid-y, seems like it deserves to be mentioned nonetheless. TMZ is reporting this week that actor Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Sin City, Carnivale) has gone missing. His wife filed a missing person report on Monday, fearing for his well-being and suspecting that he was using drugs. He had supposedly been hanging out in the Skid Row area of Downtown Los Angeles recently, and back in February he had also been arrested for failing to pay a taxi driver. While a Hollywood star using drugs is nothing new, what's weird in this case is that for years there has been talk of a Terminator-related "curse", with bad things befalling every single actor who has ever played John Connor. Everyone, that is, except for Nick Stahl. Up until now, he had been the only actor to escape its clutches,...

Stahl, who took the lead John Connor role in 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, has not been seen by his family since 9 May. His estranged wife Roseann filed a missing persons report with Lapd on Monday, according to TMZ. Earlier this year she filed court documents asking for her husband's visitation rights with their daughter Marlo to be cut to eight supervised hours per week owing to what she claimed was his regular drug use.

Included in today's MPAA bulletin is the rating for a new Walt Disney short called Paperman that I had not heard of before so I did a little snooping and it turns out it's directed by John Kahrs, an animator who worked on such Disney films as Ratatouille, The Incredibles and Toy Story 2. Kahrs also served as animation supervisor on Tangled and he's teamed with Tangled animator Patrick Osborne who posted the following on his personal blog on December 29, 2011: We're finishing up a rather exciting project at Disney in the next few weeks. It's been keeping me pretty busy and away from this blog. The short is called Paperman. Directed by John Kahrs, the short will be running the festival circuit next year. We're very proud of this one and can't wait to show the world. produced by Kristina Reed animation supervision by myself art direction by Jeff Turley Vfx sup.

A Dangerous Method
Although I'm not a fan of biopic, I'm a little bit fascinated by how Sigmund Freud developed his own brand of psychology. Besides, any film directed by David Cronenberg, one of Canada's finest, is an event. Add to this the wonderful cast made of Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley. Date of release: December 23.
Monsieur Lazhar
This film won't be a box-office success in Quebec because it features a foreign actor (French comedian Fellag) and a character who's supposed to be an immigrant. Yes, many Quebeckers are that close-minded. However, once in a while, it's a blessing to see that some Quebecker directors - in this case Philippe Falardeau - try to talk about immigration in films. Date of release: October 28.
Roméo Onze
Well, we've been hearing about this film during the summer and this might be the best film ever made by a Quebecker from ethnic minorities.

This year, the 36th annual Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff), runs for 10 days, from September 8 - 18, 2011.
Tiff organizers provided a celebratory mood for the early afternoon media crowd, with food stations and pastries, complimented by an open bar serving chilled Stella Artois beer and Skyy Vodka.
Tiff 2011 promises a strong lineup of Canadian features including new works by Canadian filmmakers Carl Bessai, Mike Clattenburg, Michael Dowse, Philippe Falardeau, Guy Maddin, Bruce McDonald, Léa Pool, Jean-Marc Vallée and Ingrid Veninger.
"This year saw many Canadian filmmakers address a wide range of pressing social issues," said Steve Gravestock, Associate Director, Canadian Programming, Tiff.
"These include the dangers of progress, the possibility of privacy and identity in a hi-tech increasingly alienated world, teenage gambling, the difficulties of maintaining a traditional rural life, life during and after wartime,...

With big names like Cronenberg and Polley already announced a couple of weeks ago, it came time this morning to announced the rest of the home team for the Toronto International Film Festival. This morning, they filled in some of the gaps in the Special Presentations, Vanguard, and Real to Reel sections, and at the same time presented the full line-ups for their Canada First! and Short Cuts programmes, the former highlighting feature debuts, and the latter comprised of a whopping 43 Canadian short films running anywhere from 4 to 28 minutes long. We saw the announcements of Maddin's Keyhole and Vallée's Venice Days entry Café de Flore coming from a mile away. Invariably, almost all any given year's Canada's Top Ten list (a prestigious, juried selection of the ten best Canadian films of the year) have appeared somewhere in Tiff's Canadian categories. Also from Venice, we have the non-Canadian helmer Mary Harron...

Alliance Films will release the dramatic thriller Afghan Luke into theatres September, 2011. The film involves two journalists sent to the remote country of Afghanistan in search of a story on Canadian snipers gone bad. What they find is a story on hashish production instead. Then, they get too close to their subject and mayhem ensues, as suggested by the film's first poster. Nick Stahl (Mirrors 2), Colin Cunningham ("Falling Skies") and Torrance Coombs ("The Tudors") are some of the principal cast members starring and those who enjoy war torn thrillers can have a closer look at this title when it releases in a limited fashion through Alliance Films late in September.
The synopsis for Afghan Luke is here:
"Disheartened when his story about Canadian snipers who are possibly mutilating corpses of enemy Afghan combatants is buried, Luke quits his job but is even more determined to return to Afghanistan to...

I recently had the pleasure of putting some questions to Canadian actress Ali Liebert, who I (and my long-time Boomtron followers) know best as “Nikki the bartender” from Harper’s Island. We talk about what her current projects are–hint: she has a lot!–and what it’s like working with people who have household name recognition. Read on to find out what she had to say!
Elena Nola: Since I know you from Harper’s Island, I want to start off with a few questions about that. First, simply, what was your favorite part about that series?
My favorite part was forming a friendship with the kind and lovely Elaine Cassidy (Abby Mills). We still hang out whenever I’m in La. Also working with my old friend Ben Cotton was fabulous. Friendships are always the best part of any show. In terms of the actual filming process, shooting...
