The Story: A goofball gym teacher (Mark Harmon) is forced to teach a remedial English class over the summer.
The Players: Starring: Mark Harmon, Kirstie Alley, Dean Cameron, Courtney Thorne-Smith & Shawnee Smith. Music by Danny Elfman. Directed by Carl Reiner.
The History: Hollywood spent a couple of years trying to make Mark Harmon happen as a movie star. Fresh off an arc on “St. Elsewhere” which infamously had his character contract AIDS from a one-night stand, his career was red hot. For a while, he was seriously considered to replace Don Johnson on “Miami Vice” after contract negotiations fell through, and in 1987-88, we got a bunch of starring vehicles that would try him out in a variety of genres to see if one would stick. He did action in The Presidio (even doing his own stunts – although the film was stolen by co-star Sean Connery), drama in Stealing Home,...

You know what they say about Old Man Marley, the South Bend Shovel Slayer? Back in ’58, he murdered his whole family and half the people on a suburban Chicago block with a snow shovel. He’s been hiding out there ever since, disguising the remains of his misdeeds by turning victims to mummies, and using the dust off their bones to salt our streets.
That’s what the kids in the McCallister house tell each other every cold December night when the lonely stranger played by Roberts Blossom appears outside their window. It’s of course a lie, but the truth was originally a lot more enigmatic in the early drafts of the Home Alone screenplay penned by John Hughes, who was a maestro of family and youth entertainment during the 1980s and early ‘90s.
At its inception, Home Alone was both a departure and a return to the well for Hughes.

Gerard Butler is known for starring in action-packed movies like 300 and Olympus Has Fallen. His most recent role starring in the movie Plane looks to be a worthy addition to the actor’s filmography. However, the title’s simplicity has been seen as questionable or even laughable. Butler, meanwhile, has recently come out in defense of the film’s name.
The ‘Plane’ title has been the subject of jokes Gerard Butler and Mike Colter at the ‘Plane’ New York screening | Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images
In Plane, Gerard Butler stars as the pilot of the titular plane and is forced to make an emergency landing on an island. While a plane certainly plays a major role in the film, basing the entire title around this plane may seem odd. Plane is a remarkably simple name, and it could be viewed as way too basic to set this movie apart from other films.

Update: Variety is reporting that the Ryan Reynolds and Colin Hanks John Candy documentary will likely be picked up by Amazon’s Prime Video, with the comedy said to be in negotiations for the film. Colin Hanks will be directing the documentary, with Reynolds on board as a producer. Hanks, whose father Tom Hanks memorably co-starred with the late comic legend in Splash and Volunteers (which also starred Hanks’ future wife Rita Wilson), apparently has the full corporation of the Candy family. This includes his widow, Rose and their two children, Jen and Chris. The film will reportedly contain home videos and never seen footage from the archive, as well as interviews with Candy’s friends and family. No release date is set yet, although given that John Candy is a Canadian icon, maybe a fall TIFF debut is in the cards?

If you don’t build it, they won’t come. With no new major titles this week, audiences chose to stay home this weekend — and for the next two months, that could be our new normal. “Bullet Train” (Sony) dropped 55 percent in its second week, but led the top 10 with a gross of 13.4 million — the lowest figure for a #1 film in over six months. Similarly, the 65 million weekend total for all films is the worst showing since early February.
Over the last four months, when studios release major films theaters respond with encouraging results — sometime spectacular, in the case of “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount). Five films passed 300 million domestic, similar to 2019 (although today’s higher ticket prices made it easier).
Grosses for the year to date are about two thirds of 2019 through the same date, but that result could prove to be the high water mark for some time — and...

The studio has 1,200 half-hours of animated content currently in production for Disney’s streaming and linear platforms, and during Roberts’ tenure in 2020, Disney Television Animation earned more Daytime Emmy Award nods than at any other point in its 38-year history.

This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6 episode 5.
Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are both known for their fine-tuned attention to detail. This means that the plotting of both shows can be meticulous, but also produce a big pay-off in the end. The lead up to the explosive climax is typically filled with plenty of key turning points, though. These are the moments that the audience marks in their head and says, “this is going to be instrumental in what happens down the road.”

David Cronenberg doesn’t want you to look away from the gruesome surgery scenes in “Crimes of the Future,” but the director certainly knows you will.
Cronenberg’s first feature in eight years brings him back to his body horror roots with Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux playing surgical performance artists who publicly showcase the metamorphosis of human organs in avant-garde performances. When their acts capture the attention of a National Organ Registry investigator (Kristen Stewart), the true government mission becomes clear: Organ transplants will lead to the next phase of human evolution. “Crimes of the Future” premieres at Cannes this month before Neon releases it stateside on June 3.
The trailer famously teased that “surgery is the new sex,” and showed — among other graphic moments — a man’s eyelids being sewn shut.

The Group B semi-finals took place on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer,” with two performers unmasking before the hour was over. Mallard was the first costumed crooner to reveal himself as “Duck Dynasty” reality TV Star Willie Robertson. His performance of “Fly” by Sugar Ray wasn’t enough to advance the billed bird to the Group B finals.
See ‘The Masked Singer’ reveals for all seasons: Celebrities and costumes through the years
“I felt comfortable being a mallard,” Willie admitted during his unmasked interview with host Nick Cannon. “When they said duck, I thought, yeah! It was just one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The first night I thought, there is no way. Most of the people that you named, I’m friends with. So I was laughing a lot because I was like, ‘he’s gonna die when he finds out they thought I was him.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched “The Masked Singer” Season 6, Episode 10, “Group B Semi-Finals,” which aired November 17 on Fox.
There has perhaps never been a more on-the-nose costume on “The Masked Singer” than “Duck Dynasty” star Willie Robertson as the Mallard. In a reality TV heavy night for “The Masked Singer,” Robertson was unmasked as Mallard, and “Queer Eye” star/interior designer Bobby Berk was revealed to be the Caterpillar, as seen on the tenth episode of Season 6, “Group B Semi-Finals.”
“I was just hiding in plain sight, I guess,” said Robertson — who pointed out that technically the character he was dressed as is not actually a mallard. “That thing was awesome, and I let them know it’s not a mallard, it’s a wood duck. I knew the difference, but then we thought it would be a funny throwoff clue.”
For Mallard, no one got Robertson right.

Singer R. Kelly has been found guilty on all nine counts in his federal sex trafficking and racketeering trial in Brooklyn.
A jury of seven men and five women convicted Kelly (real name Robert Sylvester Kelly) this afternoon after nearly six weeks of sometimes lurid and graphic testimony. Sentencing has been set for May 4. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
The verdict, which came quickly despite a complex felony case, is almost certain to be appealed.
He stood accused of being a serial sexual predator and leading a group that recruited women and young girls for sex during his years touring the world as a top R&b singer. He was arrested by New York police and federal authorities in Chicago in 2019 and transferred to New York in June. His Brooklyn trial began August 21.
Some of the charges of sexual assault and bribery dated back more than 20 years.

The words above weren’t supposed to be the headline of this column. The headline was supposed to be: “Kanye West just did an album release all wrong. Brilliantly.” I planned to delve into how Kanye, with the new Donda, has clearly learned lessons from heritage acts in how to print money from super-fans using scarcity. With his album preview concerts and associated merch grossing millions before Joe Public has even heard a note of the record, West expertly monetized the anticipation of a record release — knowing that the monetization...

Though a direct sequel to the Pixar movies that preceded it, “Monsters at Work” isn’t exactly the TV series you may expect. For one, it’s not a Pixar production. Yes, the Disney+ comedy is inspired by the world Pixar first unveiled in 2001, and, overseen by Disney Television Animation, it remains an in-house project; it’s just that the House of Mouse kept its Pixar pioneers busy on “Soul,” “Luca,” and the company’s actual first long-form TV series: “Win or Lose,” slated for Fall 2023.
So while we wait a few more years for the Pixar equivalent of the MCU hitting Disney+ (aka the animated equivalent of “WandaVision”) adjust your expectations accordingly for “Monsters at Work” — a pleasant, very well-cast office comedy for kiddos, without grander designs than that. So far, at least.
Along with smooth, rubbery animation lacking that Pixar depth and definition, “Monsters at Work” also makes a meaningful change in focus.

Another year, another Quentin Dupieux oddity. While the specter of new work from “the guy who made a movie about the killer tire” has, perhaps, worn down in the decade since Rubber, word on Mandibles—including our own—has been strong, critics praising its comfortable marriage of surrealism with buddy-comedy antics. One of those buddies just happens to be a giant fly.
Magnolia will release Mandibles on July 23, ahead of which is a trailer selling said antics amiably enough. As our review from last year’s Venice Film Festival said, “Perhaps we’re comedy-starved in today’s cinematic landscape, but Dupieux’s rollicking adventure generates rare laugh-out-loud moments and even a few applause-worthy bits. It’s a shame Mandibules won’t attempt to make its reputation in the traditional way, in a film festival run at cult or midnight slots. Ever cine-literate, Dupieux’s technique and film references are more...

Federal funding body Screen Australia confirmed its backing for a trio of Australian film projects that will now move forward into production. Director Robert Connolly (“The Dry”) is behind two of them as producer.
The funding decisions ensure that a steady stream of local films move into production, alongside the large volume of international films and TV series that are currently in Australia, taking advantage of generous incentives and good coronavirus control conditions.
Set in 1970’s Western Australia, “Kid Snow” is a drama about a washed-up Irish boxer who is offered a rematch against a man he fought 10 years ago, on a night that changed his life forever. He is faced with a chance to redeem himself when he meets a single mother and is forced to contemplate a future beyond boxing.

“We must explore this shitty place!”
- A character about to explore a shitty place
Yes you must, and you’ll take us with you, thanks. Rats: Night of Terror (1984) offers everything and more one could want in an indie release: sincerity, thievery, and sincere thievery. The Italian genre machine set its sights all post-apocalypto following the successes of Escape from New York and The Road Warrior (both ‘81), and wouldn’t you know, the films they made are by turns weird, grotesque, funny, thrilling, and titillating. Also wouldn’t you know, Rats is a whole lot of all of it.
Produced by Beatrice Film (fine purveyors of Mattei’s gut muncher Hell of the Living Dead), Rats didn’t show up in Italy until May of ‘85, after Germany premiered it in the fall of ‘84. Stateside? Not until ‘86. All of this is to say that the film’s history is checkered at best,...

The Group A finals concluded on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Masked Singer” with singer-songwriter Mark McGrath being unmasked as the Orca. The crooning sea creature made his debut in Episode 3, becoming the first wild card contestant in the history of the series and bumping the Racoon (Danny Trejo) out of the competition. Mark’s swan song was “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison.
Panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger were perplexed by the singing killer whale and none of them were able to identify the Sugar Ray frontman. Robin and Ken both thought Green Day singer Billie Jo Armstrong was behind the mask. Nicole guessed another rocker, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters. Jenny went a completely different direction, guessing professional surfer Kelly Slater.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Wednesday’s “The Masked Singer.”)
“The Masked Singer” unmasked its latest contestant tonight, revealing that Orca was “singer” Mark McGrath, who is best known as the lead vocalist for the band Sugar Ray.
We put quotation marks around “singer” there because McGrath said he puts them around the word as it applies to himself — and he explained why he was “never going to win” the Fox singing competition, despite the fact that he is a “singer.”
“I was supposed to do the show and initially I said no way. To be honest with you, it scared the heck out of me because it’s a singing competition,” McGrath told TheWrap. “Now I know you’re saying, ironically, ‘But Mark, you’re a singer?’ Now, I use the word singer in quotation marks, always, when you refer to me. I have a tone, let’s say.

Orca made a splash as the first Wild Card to compete on “The Masked Singer.” He made his surprise appearance at the end of episode 3 on March 24 and wowed us with his version of the Twisted Sister classic “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” The four judges were so impressed with his vocals that they kept him in the competition. They opted to send Raccoon home, who was revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be “Machete” actor Danny Trejo.
Orca returns to perform again in the Group A final on April 14. We think he is one of the strongest contenders for the Golden Mask. We’ve been doing some detective work and think we’ve cracked his identity. The panel are on the right track that he is someone who made his name as a rock singer but they are off-base with their guesses that the Orca is Billy Corgan or Dave Grohl.

Attempting to adapt such a horrifying historical event in a way that is appropriate for younger audiences can render a film kitschy and historically misleading, as with Mark Herman’s ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’. Taika Waititi’s ‘Jojo Rabbit’ puts children's experiences of Nazi Germany at the forefront of its narrative, but his film is full of decidedly adult subversive humor. Roberto Benigni’s film ‘Life is Beautiful’ received many accolades for its hopeful story of a father and son using humor and imagination to cope with life in a concentration camp, but it was also criticized by some for trivializing the suffering endured there. The adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s Booker-winning novel is coming to Netflix – one of a growing number of films from the region snapped up by the streaming giants
The White Tiger, the film adaptation of the Booker prize-winning book by Aravind Adiga, marks a new stage in the convergence of the world’s two most powerful film industries, in the US and India. Like Bong Joon-ho’s multiple award winner Parasite, The White Tiger is a film about the upper class, and their hired help turning against them; it is directed by Iranian-American film-maker Ramin Bahrani (99 Homes) and among its producers are A Wrinkle in Time’s Ava DuVernay, and Indian actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas (who also plays a major role in the film). The film was snapped up by Netflix – and it is no overestimation to say that streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have...

This article contains major Wonder Woman 1984 spoilers for the ending of the film. We have a spoiler free review here.
Wonder Woman 1984 fits a lot of story into its 2.5 hour runtime, especially in its action-packed third act as Diana faces off against not one, but two villains: Cheetah and Maxwell Lord. While audiences have been encouraged to think of the DC blockbuster as a relative standalone, there’s much about the sequel that harkens back to the first film and there’s much about the movie that hints at what’s to come for our eponymous hero.
If you have some burning questions coming out of Wonder Woman 1984, you’re not alone. What happens at the end of the superhero sequel? What might it mean for the future of the franchise? And which characters might be back for future installments?
We have those answers and more ahead…
