How is it possible that an American figure model who ended her career more than 50 years ago continues to be so influential upon today's popular culture? Mark Mori's Bettie Page Reveals All makes the case that the subject of his documentary was a woman ahead of her time. Born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1923, Bettie Page grew up in disadvantageous circumstances; she says her father molested her and her mother didn't want her. Like many young girls of the time, she dreamed of being a glamour girl, and even had a screen test in Hollywood, though that didn't lead anywhere. Instead, she survived an early, unsuccessful marriage, provided for herself with office jobs, and eventually moved to New York City. In her late 20s,...

Sorcerer My number one pick of the week is obviously the newly remastered Blu-ray release of William Friedkin's Sorcerer, which I already reviewed. The only issue with this one is that it doesn't come with any additional features, but the film alone is enough to consider adding this one to your collection. Read my full review right here.
Big Bad Wolves Big Bad Wolves gained notoriety when Quentin Tarantino declared it the best film of 2013. It's an interesting movie, but I wouldn't say it was the best of last year or any year for that matter. Here's a snippet from my review: Big Bad Wolves ... raises questions of "How far is too farc" and questions a victim's rights for revenge. I like that. I like those shades of grey. I like the idea of not knowing, the question of regret if you don't follow your instinct versus the voice...

Vimeo has scooped up two salacious documentaries to add to its On Demand library. Most notably, James Franco is one of two filmmakers behind Interior. Leather Bar., which imagines a graphic deleted scene from the 1980 Al Pacino movie Cruising. Franco teamed up with co-creator Travis Matthews for Interior. Leather Bar., which is inspired by a gay S&M scene ultimately cut out of Cruising. The trailer makes the film seem provocative, strange, and uncensored, making it exactly the sort of documentary one would expect to take advantage of the few restrictions of online distribution. Interior. Leather Bar. is joined on Vimeo by another sexy title: Bettie Page Reveals All, which stars famous pin-up model Bettie Page. Page, who died in 2008, made her mark through her photo shoots, which often included sexually deviant poses. The documentary looks at her life and career and even features some narration from the woman herself...

Mark Mori has created a film that, at one time, would have been deemed impossible: a thorough, even-handed chronicle of the pin-up queen’s life narrated by Bettie Page herself. Given her reclusive nature and mental health problems, not to mention her disappearance from public view for several decades, this is no small achievement. But it isn’t just the effort that should be applauded: Bettie Page Reveals All is a breezy, informative, and entertaining portrait of an uninhibited woman who helped light the flame of the sexual revolution… although that was the farthest thing from her mind. Mori and writer Doug Miller call on an impressive array of sources, including members of the...

Indiewire has obtained an exclusive clip from "Bettie Page Reveals All," the new documentary opening in limited release release today that traces the life and career of the 1950's bombshell. In the brief extract from the film, a photographer recalls shooting Page at an animal park in Florida, in which she posed with animals in a themed photo shoot bringing to mind the Tarzan films of Old Hollywood. Featuring Page reflecting on the experience in her own words, the pin-up queen comes across as refreshingly game and uninhibited, which no doubt helped make her images so iconic even to this day. "Bettie Page Reveals All" is currently in limited release in NYC.

Bettie Page wasn't called the "Queen of Pinups" for nothing: her striking, magnetic looks mesmerized a generation and played a part in the sexual revolution that would transform American society. One of the first of Playboy's Playmates of the Month (Miss January 1955, to be exact), Page quit modeling at the peak of her career in 1957 and became an evangelical Christian just two years later, going on to work for evangelist Billy Graham. In his new documentary, "Bettie Page Reveals All," Mark Mori -- who directed the 1991 Oscar-nominated nuclear safety doc "Building Bombs"-- chronicles Page's rise, fall and eventual rebirth in the 1980s and '90s as a cultural (and, in some ways, cult) icon. Mori's new film premieres in New York November 22 and opens in Los Angeles November 29. The doc delivers on its title, including nude photos of Page taken at an underground "camera club" in New York City...

Music Box Films acquired U.S. rights to the Mark Mori-directed Bettie Page Reveals All, the documentary about the pinup queen who shattered taboos in her time and helped usher in the sexual revolution. Music Box Films will open the pic theatrically in New York and Los Angeles November 29, and roll out from there. The film is based on interviews Mori taped with Page before her death in 2008. She went from poverty in the South to a career as a scandalous 50s pin-up model. The film also uncovers previously unknown details about Bettie’s many torrid affairs, told from both her and her lovers’ perspectives, and an abrupt retirement in 1957 from modeling. There are broken marriages, born-again Christianity, and bouts of mental illness involved, before she resurfaced in the 90s, oblivious to her cult status. Music Box president William Schopf negotiated the deal directly with the filmmaker.

With their Stranger than Fiction series at New York City’s IFC Center, Thom Powers and Raphaela Neihausen have been curating, programming and advocating for documentary film going on eight years now. Their Tuesday-night events are typically packed, drawing audiences with not only great films but human interaction — Q&A’s with directors, collaborators, and even the film’s subjects. Three years ago, Powers and Neihausen wondered why there wasn’t a major, all-doc festival in New York and decided to embrace the challenge of creating one. The resulting Doc NYC is now in its third year (November 8 – 15), with a new, second theater and its largest program yet (115 events, 61 films and 22 panels and classes). Opening night November 8 features Bartholomew Cubbins’ Artifact, about Jared Leto’s band 30 Seconds to Mars and its legal battle with label Emi (Leto will be in attendance) and Venus and Serena, Michelle Major and Maiken Baird...

The 2011 PollyGrind Film Festival recently wrapped up in Las Vegas, and the madman behind the scenes, Chad Clinton Freeman, checked in with Dread Central to share with us exclusively the winners of this year's fest.
Reveling in everything from arthouse to grindhouse to everything in between, PollyGrind has quickly made a name for itself as one of the up-and-coming premiere genre fests out there due to the success of each year of programming. This year's big winners (and flicks that will no doubt go on to find audiences soon) include the highly controversial The Bunny Game, The Super, Dear God No!, The Gruesome Death of Tommy Pistol and Ratline.
"I was very happy with the quantity of quality films and the diversity I was able to program this year," Freeman said. "Being able to world premiere films like Mondo Sexxxx: The Terry Kobrah Story and The Gruesome Death of Tommy Pistol,...

The 2nd annual PollyGrind assaults Las Vegas during an epic length film festival that runs Oct. 8-17 at Theatre 7 with enough sleaze and violence to make Sin City residents feel right at home.
Actually, the fest does open up on the 7th with a concert at Neon Venus with local acts like Monster Zero, Creepersin and many more.
However, the film portion of the fest opens on the 8th with Stuart Simpson‘s acclaimed Australian gorefest El Monstro Del Mar!, one of the best Russ Meyer/Roger Corman mash-ups with a Down Under twist. Read the Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film review of this gem here.
Other Bad Lit favorites in the lineup are Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s The Taint, which is still completely grossing out audiences on the festival circuit, and The Uh-Oh Show, the splatter-filled horror comedy by the Godfather of Gore himself Herschell Gordon Lewis.
