If the Britpop movement of the 1990s was defined by its brash celebration of authenticity, anti-commercialism, and, well, Britishness, the hyperpop movement of the 2010s was almost the total inverse. Characterized by heavy audio manipulation, cartoonishly catchy pop hooks, and gleefully artificial alter egos, the music released on A.G. Cook’s PC Music label openly embraced synthetic sounds and consumerist aesthetics. The title of Cook’s third album, Britpop, places these two movements in conversation with one another.
All music exists as a response to something that came before. Case in point: Britpop developed in the wake of the U.S. grunge explosion, which itself was a reaction to the extravagance of hair metal. That sort of push and pull is something that Cook has played with before—most notably on his 2020 cover of Tommy James and the Shondells’s “Crimson and Clover,” which Cook reimagined with massive saw synths and fuzzed-out guitars.

A. G. Cook began 2024 by releasing a single, “Silver Needle Golden Thread,” followed by the announcement of his third studio album, Britpop. Now, the PC Music founder is back with the album’s title track, “Britpop,” featuring Charli Xcx.
Opening with Charli delivering the refrain “Brit/ Brit like Britpop,” the track evolves in typical Cook fashion, introducing layers of shimmery, bubbling synths which eventually blossom into a full-fledged dance arrangement. Around the midway point, Charli’s vocals drop out and an intricate bass groove takes their place. For the outro, the refrain returns as a distorted echo, roaring over the beat like the whistle of an approaching train. Stream the track below.
Britpop as a whole is due on May 10th via New Alias, arriving as a 24-song project encompassing three different chapters: Past, Present, and Future. Inspired by the time he spent in the Montana hometown of his girlfriend,...

Disney wants to sell a minority stake in ESPN to one or more companies/sports leagues, and it could be in for a hefty payday when it does.
Money comes and money goes. Disney is finding that out this week, as the company agreed in principle to pay at least $8.61 billion for Comcast’s stake in Hulu on Wednesday evening. The total price could be higher once all the math is done, but either way, it’s a considerable investment on Disney’s part. Still, if Bank of America analysts are correct, Disney could be poised to recoup some of that cash in short order.
BofA analysis suggests ESPN might be worth as much as $24 billion. The information will be crucial as Disney attempts to seek strategic partnerships for ESPN. The company could sell as much as 36% of ESPN and still retain majority control. How Much for That ESPN in the Window?...

Today Sony Music Entertainment and Hyperobject Industries announced the launch of Without, a new podcast hosted by international bestselling author Omar El Akkad that takes listeners on an exploration of the things we stand to lose, the things we should be losing, and what might still be saved.
Every episode of Without is a thought experiment – what would the world look like if something we’ve become used to were no longer around? In some cases, it’s something we’re already losing – species, natural phenomena, places. In other cases, it’s things we probably should learn to live without – fossil fuels, nuclear weapons. In other cases, it’s purely a speculative thesis – what would happen if the internet totally collapsed tomorrow? Available today, episode one digs into the surprising significance of sand, uncovering its looming scarcity and the unexpected underworld of sand crime.

All You Can Eat opens with a shot of the sign for Planet Burrito, a Taco Bell type Mexican restaurant whose mascot is a three-eyed alien with a taste for human limbs that looks as if it was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. When it comes to American game shows, both Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are considered classics. Both shows have been around for decades and have devoted and very passionate fans. But it seems as if a little rivalry may have formed between the iconic competition game shows. In fact, some fans of Jeopardy! seem to think that the show just threw some serious shade at Wheel of Fortune via social media. So what exactly went down?
Jeopardy! set in 2010 | Amanda Edwards / Stringer ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and ‘Jeopardy!’ recently went head to head in a competition
The alleged beef started thanks to a competition hosted by PlutoTV. The free television channel has asked viewers to participate in a competition called Battle of the Fandoms. Both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! can be streamed on PlutoTV, so it makes sense that the two shows went head to head in the first-round competition.

Sydney Sweeney’s star continues to rise at lightning speed. Just a few days ago, her latest film, Reality, premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival. Thus far, reviews for the film have been overwhelmingly positive. One critic called the performance a “career best” for Sweeney. Another revealed that it cemented her status as a bonafide movie star. To date, Sweeney has made her mark in TV shows, movies, podcasts, brand campaigns, and even a music video. Fans will recall that she starred opposite Halsey in “Graveyard.”

Creed III is happening. The third entry in what initially started life as a continuation of the Rocky boxing franchise is now moving forward as a series of its own… and without Rocky.
The movie will follow up 2018’s Creed II, in which Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) faced off in the ring against Viktor Drago (Florian Monteanu) — son of the man who killed his father, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) — while also becoming a family man and continuing to come to terms with the legacy of his dad, Apollo Creed. Not nearly as fresh and urgent as 2015’s original Creed, the second movie was still received warmly enough by audiences and critics to make a third entry possible. Although there are some major new wrinkles this time around.
Everything you need to know about Creed III is right below, so check it out and keep coming back for more updates.

Ain't it funny how life changes? As so many musicians can relate to, Thomas Rhett Akins remembers a time when life as an artist included sold-out tours, in-person award shows and non-stop traveling. But when the coronavirus pandemic hit, the 31-year-old country singer found himself adjusting to a whole new reality. With his schedule suddenly wide open, Thomas Rhett began asking himself serious questions like, "Who am I without a stage?" and "Who am I without a guitar?" What came next was the creation of part one of his fifth studio double album titled Country Again: Side A. "I sort of had to literally write down a list of 'Ok, I'm a dad. I'm a husband. I'm a...

“Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” is a lively formulaic action-hero origin story, dunked in combat grunge, that demonstrates how a resourceful lead actor can bend and heighten the meaning of a commercial thriller. In the opening sequence, which looks like an outtake from “Zero Dark Thirty” shot in the rubble of “Full Metal Jacket,” John Kelly (Michael B. Jordan), the leader of a team of U.S. Navy SEALs, heads up a mission in Aleppo to rescue a CIA operative who’s been taken hostage. The enemy combatants turn out to be Russian ex-military forces — which is not only a surprise, but something the team’s CIA overseer, the weaselly Robert Ritter (Jamie Bell), is trying to keep from them. Back in the States, several of the SEALs who were part of the mission are killed, execution-style, by Russian nationals. The assassins go after Kelly, too, gunning down his pregnant wife,...

Abs-cbn, long the leading broadcaster in The Philippines, was Friday denied a bid to win a new franchise. The company had been forced off air in May in what many critics saw as a move to silence critics of the country’s President Rodrigo Duterte.
Since the abrupt decision in May, two of Abs-cbn’s digital channels which were not subject to the same license, were also closed. There have also been multiple discussions of the matter in Congress.
The vote on Friday was the decisive one. And congress decided by a large majority, 70-11, against giving the company a new 25-year franchise.
Duterte is understood to have sought revenge against the broadcaster, which has been consistently critical of his shoot to kill policy in a war on drugs. He also accused the station of refusing his election advertisements.
Duterte’s spokesman Friday said that it had remained neutral over the congressional decision.

Toni Collette was so moved by the true story of her latest film, “Dream Horse,” that for quite some time, she couldn’t even manage to talk about the movie without crying over how inspiring and heartfelt it is.
“Dream Horse” is the story of a Welsh supermarket clerk named Jan Vokes who dreams of owning a racehorse and convinces the people of her town to chip in a small amount every week until they can finally afford to buy and train what would become a champion racer.

More than any other period in film history, the popularity for the docu-form means we are in its healthiest and perhaps most inundated moment. With various quality levels, an endless amount of fascinating subjects/subject matters and additionally support from several governing docu-friendly institutions means that when the Sundance Institute offers funding and lab access to a given docu title it doesn’t necessarily grant an automatic berth into the festival portion which is fine when there are so many other venues to launch. Despite receiving a 2014 development grant and being selected as part of the 2015 Documentary Film Creative Producing Lab, Brick (not a remake of Rian Johnson’s feature debut) has two things going for it: a culturally curious fascination with the subject in 2015 and a duo with a mad skill-set. A profiled duo in Filmmaker Magazine’s Top 25 Faces, we were first made aware of Jessica Dimmock‘s...

Littger's darkly comical and often surreal tale sees Malorie turning each client into yet another layer of her composition, positioning the unsuspecting viewer into silent co-conspirators along with her. Apart from a stellar lead, supporting actors Christian Campbell (Trick), Margot Bingham (Boardwalk Empire), Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse) and comedian Rachel Feinstein round up the cast. From Blue Is the Warmest Color to Stranger by the Lake, from Pride to The Danish Girl, movies dealing with Lgbt issues or characters have become ever more present at film festivals and cineplexes these past years. Against such background it’s especially intriguing to consider something like Neon Bull – a Brazilian rodeo drama in which everybody turns out to be straight – and its place in queer cinema.
The story is centered around hunky groundskeeper Iremar (Juliano Cazarré), who spends his days at a rodeo in rural Brazil taking care of the animals, keeping up the localities and assisting with the races. On these chores he’s joined by a small, tightly-knit group of people including precocious girl Cacá and her mother Galega. They all dine together and sleep in neighboring hammocks, collectively facing down the monotony of an arduous, menial existence more as a family than co-workers. Iremar, meanwhile,...

The power of sound, whether a boom or a whisper, can infect us, haunt us for days. The absence of words, of speech, the strange milieu of the body, of authority, physical, purely primal, can be terrifying.Enter director/Dp Paul Taylor's Driftwood, an abstract chamber drama with Joslyn Jensen who starred in what I consider to be one of the most underrated American indies ever, the supremely ethereal Without.Driftwood is a dialog-free feature that has been shot, been edited, and is now seeking support for post audio, certainly the biggest hurdle for a film that is driven by sound, but not spoken word. They're seeking 15k to work with the talented folks at Silver Sound Studios in Manhattan. You can check out the moody pitch video below,...

With the constant reminders of the past affixed to the present, the continual struggle with identity and mental toll associated with the warfare of the photo journalism trade, we aren’t all that surprised that Catherine Keener’s character’s undetermined grace period becomes an extended hotel stay. Sans useless backstory, perhaps her character comes close to erasing herself … which is not unlike the motivations of Jack Nicholson’s Brit-American journalist in The Passenger (original Italian title is Professione: reporter) where one man takes refuge from his nouveau past in a rundown middle of nowhere Spanish town hotel in a fateful misstep that ends up assassinating his former and current self.
While the 1975 Michelangelo Antonioni film serves as a marker for Mark Jackson’s insular, murky terrain portrait and examination of how isolation manifests itself both psychologically and physically, I’d argue that Antonioni’s oeuvres is the writer-director major...

World premiering at Park City’s legendary Egyptian theatre (playing opposite was the surprise screening of Richard Linklater 12-year opus), Mark Jackson’s sophomore film on isolation, alienation, introspection and new perspectives is measurably different from his 2011 debut, Without, but both have an air of unease and malaise that is rarely depicted. A rare American independent film to wash up in an Italian backdrop, War Story pulls from the rarely addressed headlines (war photographers/journalists dealing with their own horrific experiences) and begins where the film’s protagonist (Catherine Keener) a repressed, post-traumatic stressed fotog who nurses herself (multiple non-visible injuries) back to what may be a tolerable future.
Catherine Keener, cinematographer Reed Morano (our own American New Wave 25 – 2010) , co-writer and producer Kristin Gore (profiled here) and Dave Eggar (film composer) were among his collaborators and that were present during the post-screening Q&A.

His brilliant feature debut Without, broke out in Park City….but at the neighboring, competing fest. From Slamdance onwards (BFI London, Deauville, Chicago, Locarno Film Fests) with indie cred nominations for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You (Gotham Awards) and Someone to Watch (Film Independent Spirit Awards) Mark Jackson firmly planted a flag pole for his brand of indie. And one of the most anticipated American indie films for ’14 isn’t shot on the west coast like he did with his debut, but of all places Sicily. Supported by the Cinereach folks, War Story will count as Kristin Gore’s first official screenwriting cred (Nailed is collecting dust) and Jackson managed to lasso Catherine Keener, Hafsia Herzi and Ben Kingsley as his main trio, works once again with musical whizkid Dave Eggar and cinematographer/Park City habitual Reed Morano.

Bridges is a quiet, minimalist short film from critic-turned-filmmaker Christopher Bell. It's worth noting in these here pages because at its core it features a finely tuned, nuanced performance from the brilliant Joslyn Jensen. Those with their finger on the pulse of the current American Indie scene may recall Jensen's name from a few year's back when she turned heads in Mark Jackson's provocative and challenging psychological thriller Without. Despite gaining considerable indie buzz and winning numerous awards at festivals across the globe (it also remains to this day my favorite film of 2011) Jackson's film never saw a proper release stateside, and thus, Jensen has yet to have that breakthrough moment she so readily deserves. So while Bridges is by no means the film...

Producer Ted Hope, who has been running a regular independent film screening series at Goldcrest for the last few years, is moving uptown — he’s the inaugural curator of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s monthly Indie Night showcase. And for the series opening film, he’s picked a favorite of ours here at Filmmaker: Mark Jackson’s Without. On the basis of this first feature, Jackson was selected as one of our 2011 25 New Faces. In his write-up, Brandon Harris wrote:
Comprised of shots that make you feel as if you’re glimpsing the most private of moments, a fly on the wall for one young woman’s haunting meltdown, Without may suggest some of the greats of world cinema (he is willing to site the influence of Michelangelo Antonioni and Marco Ferrari, filmmakers he ironically missed out on while studying in Italy), but Jackson has little interest in quoting them.

Established as a platform for the fringe successes and overlooked treasures of the European festival scene, the Museum of the Moving Image’s new First Look festival in New York acts as a much-needed bright spot amid the winter doldrums. It’s also the perfect antidote to an awards season hangover, offering resolutely small movies colored with a strong avant-garde streak. From the mind-bending, color-coded world of Raya Martin’s Buenos noches, España to the abundant familial milieu of Papirosen, the inaugural edition of this new event proves consistently engrossing. Below is a concise guide to some of films showing, all but one of which are NYC premieres.
Papirosen (Gastón Solnicki, Argentina)
Like a bustling inter-generational novel without a beginning or end, Gastón Solnicki’s Papirosen is a scrambled collection of anecdotes, floating about in search of a story arc. It’s a presentation that seems frazzled at first, until...

Mark Jackson's directorial debut Without, premiered in Park City this year - not at Redford's biggie event, but Sundance's competing film festival. It won the Special Jury Award in Slamdance and when Jackson was named among Filmmaker Magazine's Top 25 New Faces, the minimalist/microscopic budgeted chilly and ambiguous psychological thriller found more international love with showings at international fest stops Locarno, BFI London, Deauville and the Hamptons. In the viral interview below, I discuss Jackson's background as a filmmaker (he studied in Italy's Cinecittà), the extremely busy year he had at all the film festivals, his muse Joslyn Jensen, his collaboration with Dp and producer Jessica Dimmock (check out her photography work) and the support from Ifp/Filmmaker Magazine which gave the film a Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You nomination. ...

Sure, The Oscars are what everyone pays attention to, but over the past few years, the awards known as The Gotham Awards have become more and more influential, and more and more intriguing.
With last year’s winner Winter’s Bone becoming the indie darling of last year’s awards season, it remains to be seen as to what this year’s award darling will be, but we know who it may very well end up being. The nominees for this year’s awards have been revealed, and they are not only interesting, but even have a big time Criterion connection amongst them.
Obviously the biggest winners here are the films The Descendants and Martha Marcy May Marlene, both of which walk away with the most nods respectively. Terrence Malick’s Tree Of Life is up for Best Feature, as is one of this writer’s other favorite 2011 releases, Steve James’ The Interrupters.

Hollywoodnews.com: Nominees for the 21st Gotham Independent Film Awards were revealed this morning, and Fox Searchlight’s bound to be pleased.
Two films the studio will be pushing through the awards season – Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants” and Sean Durkin’s “Martha March May Marlene” – lead the pack with three nominations apiece, including Best Feature (for “Descendants”) and Best Ensemble Performance (for both films).
The studio’s “The Tree of Life,” director Terrence Malick’s rumination on creation and destruction, also scored a Best Feature nomination. All told, Searchlight nabbed eight Gotham nominations. The closest competitor was Focus Features and Sony Pictures Classics, each with three nominations to their names.
The remaining Best Feature nominees were Mike Mills’ “Beginners,” Jeff Nichols’ “Take Shelter” and Kelly Reichardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff.”

The heavy awards onslaught is gearing up and it is a good year to be Fox Searchlight. The 21st Gotham Independent Film Award Nominations have been announced and two of the studio’s films happen to lead the pack. Alexander Payne‘s The Descendants picked up nominations for Best Feature, Best Ensemble Performance and Best Breakthrough Actor. Their Sundance hit (and one of my personal favorites of the year) Martha Marcy May Marlene picked up Ensemble, Breakthrough Actor and Breakthrough Director for Sean Durkin.

★★★★☆ One of the twelve nominees for this year's Sutherland Award at the BFI London Film Festival (and surely a strong contender), Mark Jackson's minimalist debut Without certainly doesn’t lack emotion and intensity beneath its slow-burning exterior, and welcomes a new emerging talent in the face of Joslyn Jensen.
Newcomer Jensen is endlessly watchable as a recent college graduate isolated on a small, Washington State island community as she cares for Frank (Ron Carrier), a catatonic, wheelchair-bound old man, whilst his family are away. Before leaving, his controlling family run through a number of ridiculous rules and regulations for Joslyn to adhere to, most relating to the television's volume and channel controls, or the fact that knives should never be placed in the dishwasher.

"Without" was screened last weekend as part of Outfest 2011 in Los Angeles and Sound Unseen International Duluth in June. It seems that writers, directors and actors can be taught the craft of making movies, but the ever-present, assured hand of a born filmmaker is rare, and simply exists in a person. In "Without," the debut feature from editor/writer/director Mark Jackson, this is evident from the opening scene. Jackson's lead actress, Joslyn Jensen, is on a ferry, staring off into the distance, expressionless, before turning her attention to her phone. We will come to realize this phone is of utmost…...

It was few weeks back that Lenny Kravitz was first mentioned for The Hunger Games, though at the time there was no word on who the stylish rock star would play. In fact, since he was rumored to be in talks along with Woody Harrelson and Stanley Tucci, an early favorite for the role of the sharp fashion designer Cinna, it was unclear what Kravitz was being considered for. Since then of course, it’s been revealed that Tucci will play Hunger Games host Caesar Flickerman, and Harreslon has since been cast as the gruff mentor Haymitch. So, basically we’ve all been waiting for Kravitz to be officially announced as Cinna, as the only other role of note to be cast is that of the malevolent President Snow, who being described as being white, old, frail and generally resembling death. So, not really Kravitz’s type. [The Playlist]

[With Mark Jackson's Without having its Northwest premiere this weekend at the Seattle International Film Festival, I figured now was a good time to revisit my review from February.] There comes a point in Mark Jackson's debut feature where the tempo of tension is so great that even the sound of a door closing promises to shatter the entire frame into a million little pieces. Shot on Whidbey Island in Washington state with a small cast and crew, Without may seem a fairly typical independent, as anyone who briefly scans a synopsis might think: Joslyn, (Joslyn Jensen) a young woman barely out of high school, takes an eldercare position on a rural island. Her task is to mind the house and see to the basic...

What's a day without more "Hunger Games" casting? Looks like we won't find out Thursday (May 19), since Lionsgate announced who would be filling two more roles in the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling book.
Latarsha Rose -- who has appeared on "Swingtown," "CSI: Miami" and "Bones" in the past -- will take on the role of Peeta's stylist, Portia. Brooke Bundy, whose credits include the indie flick "Without," has been cast as Octavia, a member of Katniss's prep team.
Jennifer Lawrence ("Winter's Bone") has already signed on to star as Katniss. "Thor's" Liam Hemsworth will take on the role of Gale while Josh Hutcherson will star as Peeta.

That's two more for "The Hunger Games!"
Now that most of the principal characters have been cast for the movie (except for President Snow, sheesh!), it's time to start bringing in the lucky actors who will play the many colorful supporting parts. Latarsha Rose and Brooke Bundy are the first two out that gate and into the "Game," according to E! Online.
