Excellent depiction of a crime that transpired in the archetypal "it-could-never-happen-here" locale -- New York City's glittering Lincoln Center.

Fresh from an idyllic, post-college sojourn in Taiwan, I was 24 and seeking work in DC in 1980, so I'd never heard about the case of Helen Mintiks, a violinist who vanished during intermission of a ballet performance at the Metropolitan Opera.

The beautiful, 30-year-old blonde apparently had made the fatal error of asking where she could locate a visiting Russian dancer that evening. After being directed to an isolated section of the Met, she was bound, gagged, and dropped some 40 feet to her death. A palm print led investigators to a stagehand who went on to serve 40 years for the crime.

This program is impressive for its lineup of key players from the era and stunning photography of the scene of the crime. (Dig the dancing jets of the Revson Fountain!)

"New York Homicide" is a worthy addition to its gritty genre, and I've set my DVR for several upcoming episodes. (Wondering if the notorious Kitty Genovese case will make the cut.)
