Halloween may be over, but Scariest Scene Ever doesn't stop just because October vanished in a cloud of smoke. Chris and I have dedicated our lives to keeping tidings terrifying no matter the holiday season. Horror movies don't stop horror-ing because the calendar flips a page or the weatherman predicts a white Christmas. We're here to ensure horror movies like "When Evil Lurks" stay on your mind all year round, because it's always Spooky Season if you try hard enough.

It's almost Halloween, so of course we here at Scariest Scene Ever have to go back to the Og, the one that started it all, John Carpenter's immortal classic, "Halloween." This might sound like hyperbole, but I firmly believe "Halloween" is a perfect movie, from top to bottom. Carpenter and company were able to conjure up some sort of dark magic with that film, creating the ultimate experience in horror. While years of sequels and reboots have altered the shape of Michael Myers, the original incarnation of the character — a soulless, motiveless being who kills for seemingly no reason at all — remains terrifying. And even after all these years,...

Amazon’s second Prime Day of the year (titled Prime Big Deals Day) doesn’t kick off until Oct. 10 but there are already early-bird deals rolling in on the behemoth retailer, including discounts on Prime Video.
Right now, Amazon Prime members can add BET+ to their channel lineup for just $0.99/month for three months (regularly $9.99/month). On BET+, you can stream hundreds of popular shows such as “Atlanta,” “Love & Hip-Hop” and Season 2 of ” The Impact,” plus the entire Tyler Perry collection of films and original series.
However, more deals are likely to go live throughout the two-day event. Last year, Prime Video offered subscriptions to Paramount+, AMC+ and Starz for only 99 cents per month, and Max and MGM+ for half the price.

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Chris asks "What's your favorite scary movie?" with "Scream.")
"Scream" was a big deal. It cannot be overstated how much Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson's meta-slasher changed the game for horror. The genre felt more than a little stale in the 1990s, and then along came "Scream" in '96. The film was hip, it was bloody, it was scary, and it was funny. And it was a big damn hit, too, hauling in $173 million against a $14 million budget. In the aftermath, self-aware horror films with hot young casts became all the rage, all of them trying to ape what made "Scream" so special while never quite recapturing the magic of the original. It's also important to remember that "Scream" is scary.

When Roger Ebert's right, he's right. The prolific film critic called Tomas Alfredson's "Let the Right One In" the best modern vampire movie upon its release, still relevant praise over a decade later. The movie is many things — sweet, compassionate, bloody, and supremely dark. Vampirism is what connects two outcast children, as they perform unspeakable acts for the benefit of each other. Alfredson stays in command of a vampire tale that's often an emotional journey first, relying on adolescent actors who shoulder the beloved international hit.

In 2000, "The Exorcist" returned to theaters. But this wasn't the version of the film horror hounds were used to — it was a director's cut billed as "The Version You've Never Seen." This cut restored several deleted scenes to the film, including a new ending which lightens the mood a bit (whether or not that's a good thing is up to you; many critics found the additional ending scene superfluous). Most of the new additions to the film are small — a subliminal face here and there. But there's one particular restored scene that's become the stuff of legend: the infamous spider walk.

Under the sea, life is not better. Do you know what lives down there? Have you seen "The Shallows"? Or "Jaws"? Or countless other aquatic horror films? We all can agree "Jaws" is the best fin flick of all time, but what about second place? I'd argue that Jaume Collet-Serra's "The Shallows" is a snout's length ahead of the pack,...

(Welcome to Scariest Scene Ever, a column dedicated to the most pulse-pounding moments in horror with your tour guides, horror experts Chris Evangelista and Matt Donato. In this edition, Matt returns to the original "The Evil Dead.")
In keeping with the "Evil Dead" theme in preparation for "Evil Dead Rise" on April 21, let's return to where it all began. Sam Raimi's "The Evil Dead" is an infamous video nasty that started one of horror's most beloved franchises. Between the original trilogy, Fede Álvarez's requel, and "Ash vs Evil Dead," there's something for everyone starting with a low-budget darling that held nothing back. It's grotesque, unbelievably scrappy, and inventive in the face of financial shortcomings. "The Evil Dead" is a miracle, so let's treat it like one.
"The Evil Dead" is Raimi's first and least comedic of the original trilogy. Practical effects can be more traumatizing than blending over-the-top humor and extravagant goriness.

David Fincher's "Zodiac" was a box office disappointment when it arrived in 2007. Despite this, those who bothered to see the dang film came away impressed, and in the years since its release, "Zodiac" has risen to become considered by many (myself included) David Fincher's best film. Meticulously crafted and just as obsessive as both Fincher and the characters in the film, "Zodiac" isn't your normal serial killer movie. In fact, the killings stop rather early in the movie, and from there, "Zodiac" becomes less about the killer and more about the characters on his trail. Tense, funny, shocking, and often overwhelming, "Zodiac" is one of the best movies of the early 2000s.

In 1992, Francis Ford Coppola turned to Bram Stoker's immortal vampire novel to create a wild, stylish, erotic fever-dream of a movie. It was unlike any Dracula adaptation before and stuck closer to the book than the iconic Bela Lugosi adaptation. Bloody, operatic, and unapologetically over-the-top, Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula" was a huge hit.
Coppola's film is big, loud, and loaded with plasma. It also might be the last studio film to use only practical effects — everything, even the dream-like imagery, was created in camera. Critics were mixed at the time of release, but in the years since, it's become accepted by those who know what they're talking about that Coppola's "Dracula" rules.

Paul W. S. Anderson's best movie, "Event Horizon," was a box office flop when it arrived in 1997. But in the years since the film's release, it's built up a cult following, with fans singing the praises of Anderson's gory sci-fi/horror romp. Is it the most original film? Heavens, no! There's a ton of material here borrowed from an endless stream of movies, including "Alien" and "Hellraiser." But it's also full of unnerving imagery that has a way of unsettling even the most strong-willed of viewers. And it also features an all-time-great scene of horror that has the power to give you the creeps no matter how many times you've watched the movie.
