Scripted formats were placed front and center of BBC Studios’ panel at Series Mania, as the Doctor Who seller confirmed it is making up to three more versions of Ghosts and has bought Spain’s Brutal Media.
One of the hit BBC show’s creators, Simon Farnaby, recently told a podcast the show – which has achieved smash ratings on CBS in the U.S. – is being remade in Germany and Spain.
Matt Forde, who runs BBC Studios Global Entertainment, confirmed “there are two or three other versions in the works.”
“We love those shows and love the UK versions,” said Forde. “We are finding ways into these worlds in local creative communities.” Ghosts was recently renewed for a fourth CBS season, although the BBC version has ended.
Deadline revealed recently that BBC Studios’ deal with Lionsgate, which spawned the likes of Ghosts, had elapsed, but Forde was bullish about the scripted formats game.

In 2021, Pointless fans had to come to terms with the fact that change is the only constant in this crazy, crazy world when the show’s co-creator and co-host Richard Osman left to pursue other career opportunities such as being an incredibly successful crime novelist, and taking the main seat on his own game show Richard Osman’s House of Games.

Exclusive: On Monday, Channel 4 will detail its biggest round of layoffs in 15 years.
The British broadcaster is expected to tell its 1,197-strong workforce how it intends to cull around 200 roles, with content teams expected to learn their fate.
Channel 4 is making the cuts – the deepest since the 2008 global financial meltdown – in response to a floundering ad market that shows little sign of improving.
Speculation has been rife about how Channel 4’s commissioners will be impacted by the layoffs and commissioning is expected to be one of the hardest hit areas.
Channel 4 has been seen as having a larger commissioning team than rivals ITV and Channel 5. John McVay, who runs producer trade body Pact, recently told us his “members have often complained that Channel 4 has too many commissioners.”
Channel 4 declined to comment on plans for next week.

On May 22, 1992, three men brutally stabbed Japanese filmmaker Juzo Itami outside his Tokyo home, just days after the release of his satire “Minbo no Onna,” or “Mob Woman.”
The director of “Tampopo” and “A Taxing Woman” suffered slash wounds across the face, neck and shoulder, but ultimately survived. Police suspected the attack may have been the yakuza’s retaliation for Itami’s “Mob Woman,” which portrays Japanese gangsters as crude bullies who are outsmarted by lawyer Mahiru Inoue (played by Itami’s wife Nobuko Miyamoto).
This assault inspired writer-producer Byron Wu to develop “The Brothers Sun,” the crime family dramedy starring Michelle Yeoh as matriarch Eileen “Mama” Sun, which premiered on Netflix early this year.

There’s a moment early in Episode 2 of “The Brothers Sun” that goes way harder than it needs to. It’s not any of the bodily dismemberment as gangster Charlie (Justin Chien) breaks up the pieces of an assassin with the calm help of his mother, Eileen (Michelle Yeoh), while his estranged younger brother Bruce (Sam Song Li) looks on in horror. It’s not the ambush where Charlie and Bruce need to escape hitmen wearing inflatable dinosaur costumes. It’s not any of the machinations of the Taipei gangsters now gunning for the Sun family. It’s just this little beat of Yeoh sitting at a vanity, taking a moment amid the massive disruption to her life brought by Charlie’s arrival from Taipei and the failed hit on her husband Big Sun (Johnny Kou).

Channel 4 is compiling a plan to enact its biggest round of layoffs in more than 15 years, with up to 200 staff potentially in line to be let go. The figure would represent around 17% of the network’s overall headcount.
According to The Guardian, which broke the news, Channel 4 head honchos have been working on the plan since late last year, with a view to doubling down on digital streaming while acknowledging linear difficulties and trying to keep its circa-£700M ($887M) content budget steady as it battles against economic forces.
“Like every organisation, we are having to deal with an extremely uncertain economy in the short term and the need to accelerate our transformation to become a wholly digital public service broadcaster in the long term,” a spokeswoman said. “As a result, we need to continue to divest from our linear channels business and simplify our operations to become a leaner organisation.

Three weeks after premiering on Netflix, Young Sheldon has ascended to the most watched show on streaming platforms in the United States. A platform switch to Netflix also sent The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its biggest streaming week to date.
The two titles, which rank second and third on Nielsen’s streaming chart for the week of Dec. 4-10, are the latest examples of Netflix’s multiplying power. Young Sheldon had 1.63 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Max for the week, after recording 1.85 billion minutes a week earlier and 963 million for its first week on both platforms. The Big Bang Theory prequel had never charted before the past three weeks (it was previously exclusive to Max) and has easily surpassed its parent show in viewing time all three weeks. The Big Bang Theory had 592 million minutes of watch time on Max for Dec. 4-10.

Squid Game: The Challenge may not be as big as the show that inspired it, but the competition series still got off to a very strong start.
Netflix’s unscripted offshoot of its most popular series of all time scored a strong opening in the Nielsen streaming rankings for Thanksgiving week. Adam Sandler’s animated movie Leo claimed the top spot overall, and Young Sheldon also joined the top 10 after making its Netflix debut.
Squid Game: The Challenge drew 1.42 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Nov. 20-26. It was the top streaming series for the week, beating out Bluey (1.17 billion minutes) on Disney+, and finished second overall behind the 1.53 billion minutes for Leo.

PBS viewers will be able to celebrate the holidays with Mary Berry tonight, Monday, December 18, with her new show, Mary Berry’s Highland Christmas, which will see the beloved baker traveling to her mother’s homeland of Scotland for a magical winter break. The special comes amid Berry’s recovery from hip surgery, which she underwent in 2021 following a fall in her garden where she broke her hip. After 10 nights in hospital, The Great British Bake Off alum returned home and was forced to take things slow. “That was hard for me,” she told the U.K.’s Mirror last year. “I remember the doctor telling me that the recovery would take around a year and a half, and I thought, ‘Not for me!’ But he’s right – I still have quite a way to go before I’m fully healed. It will be a little while longer, but I’m getting there.

The final season of The Crown got off to a slower start in Nielsen’s streaming rankings — which might have something to do with the fact that Netflix released only a part of the season.
The Emmy-winning drama was the most watched show on streaming for the week of Nov. 13-19, but its 943 million minutes of viewing was less than half of that for season five’s opening (2.13 billion minutes) a year ago. It’s worth noting that Netflix released just four of The Crown’s final 10 episodes on Nov. 16 rather than the full season; the remaining six debuted Dec. 14 (and, because of the four-week lag for Nielsen’s streaming charts, watch time figures for those episodes won’t be public until mid-January).
The Crown was the only original series in Nielsen’s overall top 10. David Fincher’s Netflix movie The Killer finished 10th with 557 million minutes of viewing, but...

It was another week with no billion-minute club honorees on the Nielsen streaming charts, as The Crown took the top spot.
With help from the first four episodes of the final season, the Netflix series garnered 943M minutes viewed from November 13 to November 19. As Nielsen pointed out in its report this week, the final season of The Crown marks the end of an era for Netflix, as the series about the British royal family was one of the first streaming originals that was designed to attract an older audience.
It proved to be a strong acquisition title for Netflix, and the fact that it tallied more than 900M minutes viewed in the first few days that new episodes were available speaks to its lasting popularity. Nielsen reports that The Crown has the third-highest concentration of viewers older than 50 among this interval’s Top 10 titles, beat out by Six Feet Under...

Loki scored its biggest tune-in of season two for the week of its finale, rising by almost 200 million minutes over the prior week. That’s the good news.
The bad news for the Marvel/Disney+ series is that despite the jump, Loki still finished its second season well behind the first in terms of viewing time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Kids’ favorite Bluey led the overall rankings for the week of Nov. 6-12, and Friends continued to post higher than usual numbers two weeks after the death of star Matthew Perry.

That this has been a low-key season of The Great British Baking Show is far from an insult. Quite the opposite — it’s been refreshing to see the show go back to basics in Season 11, with lots of pleasant Brits whose baking triumphs and tribulations never once made your blood pressure go up. No twink romances, no Italian dynamos, no controversies over ill-conceived nationally themed weeks.
It's not to say that this season was without its share of memorable contestants or narratives. There was new co-host Alison Hammond, whose established a good rapport with the contestants (though let's have a talk about Prue before next season).

The Great British Bake Off, which airs on Netflix in the U.S., crowned its latest winner on Wednesday’s (November 29) Season 14 finale, with underdog Matty Egell taking home the trophy. Edgell entered the competition as a self-described “underdog,” believing he “wasn’t good enough” to battle the much more experienced bakers. At one point, he didn’t even think he had what it took to apply for the show but eventually signed up after encouragement from his fiancée. Edgell entered the latest series with the skills learned from his grandmother while growing up with a point to prove. Across the ten weeks, Edgell and his fellow contestants baked everything from vertical layer cake, illusion biscuits, cottage loaves, cheesecake, mini picnic pies, spiced buns, treacle sponge, sausage rolls, and tarte aux pommes. Channel 4/YouTube Edgell impressed judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith over the course of the 30 Challenges, earning...

With the news of Matthew Perry’s death in late October, viewers seemingly turned to his best-known role as Chandler Bing on Friends to remember him.
The beloved comedy gathered 583 million minutes of viewing on Max for the week of Oct. 23-29 (Perry, 54, was found dead at his home on Oct. 28). That was a 31 percent gain over the previous week and the biggest total watch time for Friends since early February.
A pair of movies, No Hard Feelings and Five Nights at Freddy’s, also made strong showings on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week. The former, starring Jennifer Lawrence, led the rankings with 1.13 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix in the United States — the equivalent of about 10.97 full showings of the movie. The run-up to Halloween proved to be a good time to release a new version of Goosebumps.
The series based on R.L. Stine’s beloved books broke into the top 10 overall for the week of Oct. 16-22. The show, which streams on both Disney+ and Hulu, racked up 594 million minutes of viewing for its second week of release, marking a rare non-Marvel or Star Wars original series entry for Disney+ in Nielsen’s rankings (being available on two platforms helped, as well).
Nielsen, incidentally, classified Goosebumps as an acquired show the previous week, apparently because of it being shared across the two platforms, before switching it to the originals column going forward.

Lily Allen is calling out Russell Brand for a rape joke made at her expense between himself, Jimmy Carr, Noel Fielding and Jonathan Ross.
The 38-year-old “Smile” singer recalled the moment on The Big Fat Quiz of the Year in 2007.
At the start of the show, Jonathan moved Lily, “the only sexually attractive young lady” on the panel, away from panelists Russell and Noel Fielding to the “sexless zone,” saying it was to protect her.
Keep reading to find out more…
“And then Lily may go home with her dress still on,” Jonathan said, to which The Great British Bake Off co-host responded: “How dare you – we’re not rapists.”
Jimmy then asked why he was wearing a cape “if [he] wasn’t a rapist,” with Noel explaining that his cape was actually a Jack the Ripper cape.
“He wasn’t a rapist, he was a…” Noel replied, before Russell added: “Serial murderer.

The latest season of The Great British Baking Show — officially the 14th, though on Netflix it's marked as "Collection 11" — has been a rebound from the last few underwhelming installments. A big part of that has been the shakeup in hosts, with actress and TV host Alison Hammond joining a returning Noel Fielding. Hammond's fresh enthusiasm and easy rapport with the bakers has been a welcome change from the aloof stylings of Matt Lucas, on whom many of the show's fans had loudly soured by last year.
With Matt gone, though, we're free to have the conversation we've been putting off for several years now: Has judge Prue Leith outlived her usefulness on this show? Is she the next weak link in the chain who needs to be replaced?...
